This document discusses SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud) services as the new trends in the IT industry. 2. Introduction
○ SMAC – Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud Services are
the new trends in current IT industry.
○ It is called the Fifth wave of IT era.
○ The Social Networking and Mobile communication are
becoming a must for current world to make the
information/contacts available from anywhere and handy.
○ Analytics – The Analytics play a vital role in any industry.
For example if the senior management of a company needs
to make a decision, he may need to perform some analysis
on the past data and using the same he can take a right
decision. Currently the data seems to be in unstructured
format and finding difficult to perform such analysis.

3. Introduction
○ Today the distributed method of computing is helping to
keep and process huge data. As lot of information are
hidden in unstructured format, by using distributed
computing and various Analytics algorithm these data can
be efficiently used by the industries for making their future
decision.
○ In the SMAC era, infrastructure layer will be able to
processing vast amounts of data and be capable of
learning from this information and make intelligent
decisions.
○ Cloud services to gain access to technology with less cost
and maintaining data with infinite scaling.

4. Trends
○ Image centric networks like Instagram, Snapchat though
may not be a competition to Facebook, they are drawing a
large customer base slowly.
○ Snapchat won large customers because of its ability to
send photos and videos that self-destruct after being sent.
○ Improvements in Smart phones such as built in projector.
Eg DLP (Digital Light Projection) WVGA projector in
Samsung galaxy beam.
○ Mobile companies move from 2D future features smart
phone to 3D features smart phone.

5. Trends
○ Visualisation of data will make data analytics more
accessible in 2014 and 2015. Visual analytics allows users
to ask more interactive questions of prepared data sets and
get immediate visual responses.
○ Innovations such as cloud data warehouse platform from
Amazon, Redshift will set new standards in Business
Intelligence platforms.
○ Plenty of software firms are building more big data apps to
bring power of data analytics to people

6. Interest Areas
○ My area of interest is to work more on Analytics part of
SMAC. Data are gold mine for any industry. Most of the
industry like insurance are having data accumulated for
more than 40 years. Some of the vital information are in
unstructured format and the industry may need to analyze
the information for better decision making. This makes me
to dig into this analytics part of SMAC

7. Interest Areas
○ As my area of interest is Analytics I would like to take this
opportunity on building a recommendation system by
analyzing the large data set. A high level block diagram of
my view on building a recommendation system is below. As
I am having some knowledge in Java I would use the same
to create the map-reduce program for performing the
analytics part in Hadoop.
