The Problem
The Plant was suffering from high
temperatures in the caster area as a result of
the heat collecting at the ceiling.
Severstal contacted Moffitt to figure out how
to best relieve the heat from this
space, without interfering with the work
process or letting in rain or weather.

Before modifications the mill was dark, smoky and hot.

Moffitt utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics
(CFD) in the design process for this project.
This allowed Moffitt to design a sophisticated
model of the building before any work was
done.
CFD is a computer program that predicts air
flows and transfers of energy within a
building. This allows Moffitt to more
accurately determine where the heat collects
and how to best ventilate it from the building.

Using CFD, Moffitt understood the amount of intake and outlet air
required to reduce the temperatures in the mill and installed
natural ventilation systems in key areas to improve the ventilation.

Moffitt installed Labyrinth units running down slope to allow for
the hot air to escape from the mill.

Severstal wanted to take advantage of the maintenance and
operating cost savings that a natural ventilation system provides.

while also providing ample natural lighting.

For this project, the goal was to reduce the temperature at the caster deck
to bring it within 10 degrees of outdoor ambient conditions.

Results
Moffitt exceeded the project goals and
dramatically improved operating conditions at
the caster deck. The new ventilation system
lowered the temperature to within 5 degrees
of outdoor ambient.
Based on the success of this project, Severstal
utilized Moffitt’s ventilation services for
several other areas of the plant.
