Executive Summary
MedAssets is nominating John Bardis for the Modern Healthcare Community Leadership Award for his
leadership, dedication, and financial contributions in support of numerous charities, his response to several
global human tragedies, and his care and provision for people in need. He believes corporations are ideal to
support charitable organizations – by nature businesses perpetually generate revenue to support ongoing giving,
and employ people who know how to work together for a common goal. He personally provides leadership and
significant financial assistance to two specific charities and is generally supportive of numerous others. John’s
efforts not only support Hire Heroes USA and Heart for Africa, but every needy person he meets. His efforts
assist in keeping with the highest qualities of citizenship and patriotism. He consistently perpetuates further
giving by motivating employees and suppliers to act in charitable ways.

John Bardis is Founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MedAssets, a leading performance
improvement company for healthcare organizations. John Bardis has taken three different companies public,
and was ranked as one of the 100 most influential men in Healthcare in 2011. He is a senior business leader in
Atlanta and has been for over ten years and is highly respected in both the community and local businesses for
his continued devotion to charity and for his unparalleled work ethic. John is widely recognized in the business
community as an executive of the highest moral standing.

John has portrayed active leadership in his community and church, along with playing an integral role in several
national charities which continually exhibits his character to be above reproach. He has established an
environment of honor and commitment within MedAssets, a company of over three thousand employees. He
continually sets a tone of absolute integrity, mutual cooperative support and assistance and self-sacrificing
behavior for the company and its people.

Professional Accomplishments
Hire Heroes USA
John Bardis serves as the Chairman, Health Careers Foundation, Hire Heroes USA, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization that helps combat veterans find successful careers after they are medically discharged for their
wounds or when their tour of duty has ended. John founded this organization in 2007 after he encountered a
young man who had lost his leg in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, on a street in Washington,
DC. John mentored the young soldier and gave him a full time position within his company, MedAssets, Inc.
Upon realizing the employment struggles that veterans endure, John expanded this effort by starting Hire
Heroes USA. Under John’s leadership, with the leverage of his network, and through his financial support, Hire
Heroes USA has helped over 500 combat veterans find successful careers and assisted countless veterans to gain
employment skills, medical treatment, and financial support.

John spoke about Hire Heroes USA on Fox & Friends in December 2011.
John also had an editorial posted on FoxNews.com where he encouraged a call to action from private sector
CEOs.

Heart for Africa
John also has served on the Board of Directors, Heart for Africa (HFA), a faith-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3)
charity. Working with partners in Africa, HFA provides financial and other support to homes for orphans and
vulnerable children through long term financial support programs and short term service trips that deliver
quality care, shelter, food, water, clothing, health care, social work, mentoring and education. HFA currently
serves in Kenya and Swaziland. John began to embrace this foundation after reading a book, It’s Not OK With
Me, pertaining to the skyrocketing AIDS epidemic in Africa that has resulted in extreme child abandonment and
homelessness. He personally donated over one million dollars to this cause in 2009 and spent two weeks in
Africa with his family volunteering at the orphanages and within the community.

USA Wrestling Team
John was chosen as the Team Leader for the US National Greco Roman Wrestling Team in Beijing, China during
the 2008 Olympic Games. A former US National Wrestling Team member himself, John was chosen for this
prestigious position after his outstanding leadership and mentorship aided the United States Wrestling Team to
win our first ever World Championship in 2007. John was a tremendous leader of the team and made numerous
personal and financial contributions to their success. He continues to serve as a great mentor to all members of
our national wrestling team, frequently setting them up in successful careers after they have retired from
competition. There is not one wrestler at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs that has not benefited
from the leadership of John. John also serves on the Board of Directors, USA Wrestling. He maintains contact
with hundreds of former wrestlers, mentoring them in the careers and family lives. In the fall of 2011, Mr. Bardis
was appointed to the board of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

MedAssets Corporate Citizenship
Under John Bardis’ leadership, MedAssets has committed over $1,000,000 in Corporate Outreach annually. This
is less than the amount he gave personally to MedAssets-supported charities alone in 2011. He supports many
other charitable interests both inside and outside of MedAssets such as Samaritan’s Purse, First Fruits Ministries,
MedShare International, the Ochsner Foundation, Project Perfect World, the Ray Mendoza Leadership Fund and
the American Red Cross. John provides leadership and assets to all of these groups annually.

Veteran Outreach
In following suit with John’s direction, MedAssets employees prepare and ship several hundred boxes of soldier
care packages monthly to our troops in the field. To date, nearly 16,000 military care packages has been sent to
military personnel serving our country overseas. He has on several occasions paid for the expenses of the annual
Marine Ball in Las Vegas. John is committed to doing anything in his power to aid our veterans for their service
and commitment to our nation, and he believes strongly that they deserve a chance at the American Dream for
which they have courageously fought. MedAssets also supports the American Fallen Soldiers Project which was
formed to help provide comfort and healing to the mourning families of our fallen military men and women by
providing original portraits of fallen loved one that fully captures their appearance and personality to the
families of the fallen soldiers, at no cost. MedAssets is creating an office and gallery in the Plano office for the
American Fallen Soldiers Project.

MedShare International
John is an active contributor to MedShare International whose sole mission is to collect and re-distribute un-
used medical supplies to third world medical clinics and hospitals. John sent a 40 foot trailer to Mully Children’s
Family to stock and supply their medical clinics which are the only medical care providers for the entire district
until one gets to Nairobi two hours away. Another active project that benefits from John’s efforts is Project
Perfect World Foundation whose sole mission is to organize and sponsor teams of surgeons, nurses and OR
personnel to travel to third world countries to perform major surgery on children such as musculoskeletal
surgery, cleft palate or other reconstructive surgeries. John aids Community Coalition for Haiti Foundation
which provides ongoing support to hurricane ravaged Haiti. Projects include home construction, rural
development projects such as well development for clean drinking waters, medical supplies, and annual
donation projects.

Heart and Soul Program
John established the MedAssets Heart and Soul Program as a mechanism that enables MedAssets employees to
provide assistance for valid and worthy charities. The core values of MedAssets – compassion, character,
confidence and commitment – are critical to the company’s success as they describe how employees think, act
and perform in business operations. These principles create a corporate culture that drives productivity and
makes employees feel proud to work for a company that strives to achieve such honorable standards. Because
MedAssets promotes the opportunity to serve, and yet understands it is sometimes difficult to find the time to
improve our communities, the Heart and Soul program was created. Through Heart and Soul, MedAssets will
pay employees their normal hourly rate or salary up to five business days per calendar year to serve at a
qualified and approved charitable organization. In 2011, MedAssets employees dedicated over 3,000 hours to
the Heart and Soul Program.

Other Charities
Under John’s leadership, MedAssets was for many years the Corporate Sponsor of the Bob Busse Classic, an
annual golf outing fund raising event that raises money to support the Atlanta Special Olympics. John has
personally orchestrated the use of his private club for this event. Through John, MedAssets has taken key roles
in numerous other charity tournaments, walks, rides and iron man events nationwide.

Through John’s oversight, MedAssets has been a regular and ongoing supporter of Meals on Wheels, the
American Breast Cancer Association, and other numerous smaller charities nationwide. John not only gives of
himself and his resources, he also widely and strongly empowers his employees to contribute in a similar
manner. Many employees and their families have themselves been the beneficiary of John’s and the company’s
generosity when confronted with medical crises and the loss of loved ones.

In 2010, John coordinated the transportation of doctors, medical supplies, and other provisions to Haiti in
response of their terrible earthquake. John used his personal plane and finances to fly doctors from client
facilities, volunteers and supplies to the tragedy. He also set up a donation program through MedAssets and
raised $50,000, which he seeded with a personal donation. John then traveled to Haiti personally to help with
the recovery, despite his numerous commitments and duties. Using MedAssets supplier relationships, we were
able to coordinate the 27,000 pounds of supplies that were donated to the cause. To learn more about the
outcomes of this cause from Inova Health System’s video, click HERE. Scripps CEO, Chris Van Gorder, kept a
journal from the trip and you can read some of the postings here: CEO Journal 1, CEO Journal 2, CEO Journal 4,
CEO Journal 5, and CEO Journal 16.

MedAssets Annual Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award
Recognition
Every year, MedAssets honors an individual or individuals who exhibit extraordinary behavior in helping others
and making a difference in our world. The award is named for Dr. Norman Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize winner
who dedicated his life’s work to finding ways to end famine and feed the world’s hungry.

2009
The MedAssets Humanitarians of the Year Award was changed to the Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award in
honor of Dr. Borlaug for his dedication and commitment to feeding the world. The winner for 2009 was Heart
For Africa. Janine and Ian Maxwell, the founders of Heart For Africa were awarded for their leadership in
providing stable environments for orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya and Swaziland. Their development
of Project Canaan in Swaziland will serve 1000’s of orphans and produce sustainable food supplies and economic
security for the vulnerable children there. The Maxwells gave up lucrative business careers to devote their lives
to Heart For Africa. The US-based non-profit works with local African organizations to provide self-sustainable
homes for orphans through long term programs and short term service trips that deliver quality care, shelter,
food, water, clothing health care social work, mentoring and education. Over the past two years, MedAssets and
its employees have donated $1.8 million and thousands of hours of service to the development of Project
Canaan as a sustainable agricultural program. When completed, Project Canaan will include farmland, fisheries,
hydroponic greenhouses, orchards and dairy operations, a health clinic along with housing and schools for
orphans and vulnerable children.

2010
MedAssets, Norman Borlaug Humanitarian of the Year Award winner for 2010 was Maggie Doyne, founder of
the Kopila Valley Children’s Home, the BlinkNow Foundation and Kopila Valley Primary School. At the age of 24
she is the youngest to receive this award and has accomplished much using the mantra of “one child at a time”.
During her gap year before starting college she joined the Peace Corps traveling through Asia and India,
eventually, finding her way to war-torn Nepal. For over 1 million orphaned and abandoned Nepali children,
child labor is a way of life and without money for school fees, there is no hope for education. In 2005, at the age
of 19, Maggie felt compelled to do something, so she paid the fee for one child to attend school (and another,
and another...). In 2006, utilizing her savings, she purchased the land for and built the Kopila Valley Children’s
Home, now a safe haven for 40 orphaned and abandoned children. In 2010, thanks to support from John and
MedAssets, Maggie opened up the Kopila Valley Primary School, which has a current enrollment of over 250
children. Maggie also formed the non-profit, BlinkNow. BlinkNow’s mission is to “empower young people to
become pioneers in developing their own solutions to world poverty.” One child, one person at a time.

2011
The MedAssets 2011 Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award winner is Elissa Montanti, founder of the non-profit,
non-partisan Global Medical Relief Fund (GMRF) for Children. Founded in 1997, GMRF’s mission is to aid
children who are missing or have lost the use of limbs or eyes, have been severely burned, or have been injured
due to war, natural disaster or illness. Since its founding, GMRF has brought more than 150 children to the
United States from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia for treatment, surgery and prosthetic limb and eye
fittings. GMRF’s commitment to the children is until they reach the age of 21.

The George H.W. Bush Pacesetter Award was introduced in 2011 to honor our Nation’s veterans who have
embraced the opportunity to serve others inside and outside the United States Armed Forces uniform.

2010
The 2010 Award recipient is Louis Zamperini. Nicknamed “Lucky”, Louis Zamperini tied the world record for the
5000 meter run in the 1936 Olympics. Following the Olympics, Louis was deployed to the Pacific with the U.S.
Air Corps as a bombardier. His plane crashed in the Pacific, he, along with 2 other crew members were stranded
for 47 days before making landfall in the Japanese-controlled Marshall Islands where they became POW’s for 25
months. Upon his freedom, he was awarded the Purple Heart and promoted to Captain. He returned in 1950
and forgave his captors.

2011
The 2011 Award recipient is Colonel George Everette “Bud” Day. Col. Day is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and

months as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. While imprisoned, Day was beaten, starved and tortured, but
refused to give any valuable information to his captors. He is often cited as being the most decorated U.S.
service member since General Douglas MacArthur, having received some seventy decorations, a majority for
actions in combat. Day is a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the Air Force Cross.

  • 3. Executive Summary MedAssets is nominating John Bardis for the Modern Healthcare Community Leadership Award for his leadership, dedication, and financial contributions in support of numerous charities, his response to several global human tragedies, and his care and provision for people in need. He believes corporations are ideal to support charitable organizations – by nature businesses perpetually generate revenue to support ongoing giving, and employ people who know how to work together for a common goal. He personally provides leadership and significant financial assistance to two specific charities and is generally supportive of numerous others. John’s efforts not only support Hire Heroes USA and Heart for Africa, but every needy person he meets. His efforts assist in keeping with the highest qualities of citizenship and patriotism. He consistently perpetuates further giving by motivating employees and suppliers to act in charitable ways. John Bardis is Founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MedAssets, a leading performance improvement company for healthcare organizations. John Bardis has taken three different companies public, and was ranked as one of the 100 most influential men in Healthcare in 2011. He is a senior business leader in Atlanta and has been for over ten years and is highly respected in both the community and local businesses for his continued devotion to charity and for his unparalleled work ethic. John is widely recognized in the business community as an executive of the highest moral standing. John has portrayed active leadership in his community and church, along with playing an integral role in several national charities which continually exhibits his character to be above reproach. He has established an environment of honor and commitment within MedAssets, a company of over three thousand employees. He continually sets a tone of absolute integrity, mutual cooperative support and assistance and self-sacrificing behavior for the company and its people. • 4. Professional Accomplishments Hire Heroes USA John Bardis serves as the Chairman, Health Careers Foundation, Hire Heroes USA, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps combat veterans find successful careers after they are medically discharged for their wounds or when their tour of duty has ended. John founded this organization in 2007 after he encountered a young man who had lost his leg in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, on a street in Washington, DC. John mentored the young soldier and gave him a full time position within his company, MedAssets, Inc. Upon realizing the employment struggles that veterans endure, John expanded this effort by starting Hire Heroes USA. Under John’s leadership, with the leverage of his network, and through his financial support, Hire Heroes USA has helped over 500 combat veterans find successful careers and assisted countless veterans to gain employment skills, medical treatment, and financial support. John spoke about Hire Heroes USA on Fox & Friends in December 2011. John also had an editorial posted on FoxNews.com where he encouraged a call to action from private sector CEOs. Heart for Africa John also has served on the Board of Directors, Heart for Africa (HFA), a faith-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charity. Working with partners in Africa, HFA provides financial and other support to homes for orphans and vulnerable children through long term financial support programs and short term service trips that deliver quality care, shelter, food, water, clothing, health care, social work, mentoring and education. HFA currently serves in Kenya and Swaziland. John began to embrace this foundation after reading a book, It’s Not OK With Me, pertaining to the skyrocketing AIDS epidemic in Africa that has resulted in extreme child abandonment and homelessness. He personally donated over one million dollars to this cause in 2009 and spent two weeks in Africa with his family volunteering at the orphanages and within the community. USA Wrestling Team John was chosen as the Team Leader for the US National Greco Roman Wrestling Team in Beijing, China during the 2008 Olympic Games. A former US National Wrestling Team member himself, John was chosen for this prestigious position after his outstanding leadership and mentorship aided the United States Wrestling Team to win our first ever World Championship in 2007. John was a tremendous leader of the team and made numerous personal and financial contributions to their success. He continues to serve as a great mentor to all members of our national wrestling team, frequently setting them up in successful careers after they have retired from competition. There is not one wrestler at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs that has not benefited from the leadership of John. John also serves on the Board of Directors, USA Wrestling. He maintains contact with hundreds of former wrestlers, mentoring them in the careers and family lives. In the fall of 2011, Mr. Bardis was appointed to the board of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Modern Healthcare Community Leadership Award PAGE 3
  • 5. MedAssets Corporate Citizenship Under John Bardis’ leadership, MedAssets has committed over $1,000,000 in Corporate Outreach annually. This is less than the amount he gave personally to MedAssets-supported charities alone in 2011. He supports many other charitable interests both inside and outside of MedAssets such as Samaritan’s Purse, First Fruits Ministries, MedShare International, the Ochsner Foundation, Project Perfect World, the Ray Mendoza Leadership Fund and the American Red Cross. John provides leadership and assets to all of these groups annually. Veteran Outreach In following suit with John’s direction, MedAssets employees prepare and ship several hundred boxes of soldier care packages monthly to our troops in the field. To date, nearly 16,000 military care packages has been sent to military personnel serving our country overseas. He has on several occasions paid for the expenses of the annual Marine Ball in Las Vegas. John is committed to doing anything in his power to aid our veterans for their service and commitment to our nation, and he believes strongly that they deserve a chance at the American Dream for which they have courageously fought. MedAssets also supports the American Fallen Soldiers Project which was formed to help provide comfort and healing to the mourning families of our fallen military men and women by providing original portraits of fallen loved one that fully captures their appearance and personality to the families of the fallen soldiers, at no cost. MedAssets is creating an office and gallery in the Plano office for the American Fallen Soldiers Project. MedShare International John is an active contributor to MedShare International whose sole mission is to collect and re-distribute un- used medical supplies to third world medical clinics and hospitals. John sent a 40 foot trailer to Mully Children’s Family to stock and supply their medical clinics which are the only medical care providers for the entire district until one gets to Nairobi two hours away. Another active project that benefits from John’s efforts is Project Perfect World Foundation whose sole mission is to organize and sponsor teams of surgeons, nurses and OR personnel to travel to third world countries to perform major surgery on children such as musculoskeletal surgery, cleft palate or other reconstructive surgeries. John aids Community Coalition for Haiti Foundation which provides ongoing support to hurricane ravaged Haiti. Projects include home construction, rural development projects such as well development for clean drinking waters, medical supplies, and annual donation projects. Heart and Soul Program John established the MedAssets Heart and Soul Program as a mechanism that enables MedAssets employees to provide assistance for valid and worthy charities. The core values of MedAssets – compassion, character, confidence and commitment – are critical to the company’s success as they describe how employees think, act and perform in business operations. These principles create a corporate culture that drives productivity and makes employees feel proud to work for a company that strives to achieve such honorable standards. Because MedAssets promotes the opportunity to serve, and yet understands it is sometimes difficult to find the time to improve our communities, the Heart and Soul program was created. Through Heart and Soul, MedAssets will pay employees their normal hourly rate or salary up to five business days per calendar year to serve at a qualified and approved charitable organization. In 2011, MedAssets employees dedicated over 3,000 hours to the Heart and Soul Program. Modern Healthcare Community Leadership Award PAGE 4
  • 6. Other Charities Under John’s leadership, MedAssets was for many years the Corporate Sponsor of the Bob Busse Classic, an annual golf outing fund raising event that raises money to support the Atlanta Special Olympics. John has personally orchestrated the use of his private club for this event. Through John, MedAssets has taken key roles in numerous other charity tournaments, walks, rides and iron man events nationwide. Through John’s oversight, MedAssets has been a regular and ongoing supporter of Meals on Wheels, the American Breast Cancer Association, and other numerous smaller charities nationwide. John not only gives of himself and his resources, he also widely and strongly empowers his employees to contribute in a similar manner. Many employees and their families have themselves been the beneficiary of John’s and the company’s generosity when confronted with medical crises and the loss of loved ones. In 2010, John coordinated the transportation of doctors, medical supplies, and other provisions to Haiti in response of their terrible earthquake. John used his personal plane and finances to fly doctors from client facilities, volunteers and supplies to the tragedy. He also set up a donation program through MedAssets and raised $50,000, which he seeded with a personal donation. John then traveled to Haiti personally to help with the recovery, despite his numerous commitments and duties. Using MedAssets supplier relationships, we were able to coordinate the 27,000 pounds of supplies that were donated to the cause. To learn more about the outcomes of this cause from Inova Health System’s video, click HERE. Scripps CEO, Chris Van Gorder, kept a journal from the trip and you can read some of the postings here: CEO Journal 1, CEO Journal 2, CEO Journal 4, CEO Journal 5, and CEO Journal 16. • 7. MedAssets Annual Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award Recognition Every year, MedAssets honors an individual or individuals who exhibit extraordinary behavior in helping others and making a difference in our world. The award is named for Dr. Norman Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who dedicated his life’s work to finding ways to end famine and feed the world’s hungry. 2009 The MedAssets Humanitarians of the Year Award was changed to the Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award in honor of Dr. Borlaug for his dedication and commitment to feeding the world. The winner for 2009 was Heart For Africa. Janine and Ian Maxwell, the founders of Heart For Africa were awarded for their leadership in providing stable environments for orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya and Swaziland. Their development of Project Canaan in Swaziland will serve 1000’s of orphans and produce sustainable food supplies and economic security for the vulnerable children there. The Maxwells gave up lucrative business careers to devote their lives to Heart For Africa. The US-based non-profit works with local African organizations to provide self-sustainable homes for orphans through long term programs and short term service trips that deliver quality care, shelter, food, water, clothing health care social work, mentoring and education. Over the past two years, MedAssets and its employees have donated $1.8 million and thousands of hours of service to the development of Project Canaan as a sustainable agricultural program. When completed, Project Canaan will include farmland, fisheries, hydroponic greenhouses, orchards and dairy operations, a health clinic along with housing and schools for orphans and vulnerable children. 2010 MedAssets, Norman Borlaug Humanitarian of the Year Award winner for 2010 was Maggie Doyne, founder of the Kopila Valley Children’s Home, the BlinkNow Foundation and Kopila Valley Primary School. At the age of 24 she is the youngest to receive this award and has accomplished much using the mantra of “one child at a time”. During her gap year before starting college she joined the Peace Corps traveling through Asia and India, eventually, finding her way to war-torn Nepal. For over 1 million orphaned and abandoned Nepali children, child labor is a way of life and without money for school fees, there is no hope for education. In 2005, at the age of 19, Maggie felt compelled to do something, so she paid the fee for one child to attend school (and another, and another...). In 2006, utilizing her savings, she purchased the land for and built the Kopila Valley Children’s Home, now a safe haven for 40 orphaned and abandoned children.
