3. Where the Welsh settled I n the early 1860s Welsh immigrants lived mostly in Auckland, Wellington, Nelson and Canterbury. Welsh people lived all over New Zealand but by 1916 most Welsh people lived in Auckland and Wellington. By 1976 more than half of New Zealand’s Welsh people lived in Auckland. Welsh miners were important to New Zealand’s mining industry, especially coal mining, between the world wars. In 1936, Welsh working men were four times more likely than those from other countries to be miners.
4. WELSH SOCIETIES Even though there are not that many Welsh immigrants, they have kept their traditions. Those who lived in Canterbury started the first Welsh organisation in New Zealand, the Cambrian Society of Canterbury. The group encouraged immigration from Wales, and helped the Welsh immigrants to keep Welsh traditions in folk dancing, choirs to sing carols and folk songs, and to celebrate St David’s Day on the 1 of March. There are also Welsh societies in Wellington (formed in 1907) and in Auckland (formed in 1925).
