3. Michael Cooney’s Cash on Delivery is a farce about lies, damn lies and excuses – with some surgical stockings, aninsane washing machine and lots of mistaken identitiesthrown in for good measure. It tells the story of a dayin the life of Eric Swan, who lost his job and hasn’t
told his wife.
Without really meaning to, he started getting benefitsand allowances for non-existent lodgers and theirrelatives. And then, one day, the Man from the
Department dropped by…
This relentlessly funny play careers along fromsituation to situation, each funnier, more contrivedand more unlikely than the last. Alongside Eric are hisloving wife Linda, his extremely dodgy Uncle George andNorman the lodger. Through the door come the DSS man,the sexual relations counsellor, the undertaker, thebereavement counsellor, the scary hard-line feminist and
Norman’s fiancée.
Not forgetting the washing machine.
Mixing all these together guarantees an evening ofnon-stop laughs for the whole audience. In case youwere worried, the Director guarantees that no washingmachines were injured during the making of this
production.

5. From the Director...
Welcome to the Brewhouse Theatre for
the Taunton Thespians autumn production.
This is my directorial début for the Thespians, having acted
or taken backstage roles in previous TT productions and having
been a performer and director for other local amateur groups
for longer than I care to remember. I have been fortunate
enough, over the years, to be able to try my hand, one way or
another, at many different styles of theatre but I always find
myself gravitating back to comedy.
When offered the chance to do a farce I had no hesitation in
offering Michael Cooney’s delicious piece of fun that is ‘Cash
on Delivery’. This takes us back to 1996 when the Department
of Health and Social Security was in existence, and when the
bureaucracy, that we all love to have a grumble about, was just
as evident at it is today. Nowadays we would have to refer to
the Department of Work and Pensions which does not seem to roll
off the tongue as easily, but which, I am sure, still has to
deal with many multiple claims on a daily basis – some things
never really change!
Rehearsals have run apace and there have been many occasions
when we have had to stop, try and contain our laughter and
begin again. The assortment of characters who, one by one,
appear on stage and add to the mayhem are all beautifully
constructed by the author and are an actor’s delight, each of
them being pivotal to the unfolding story. The cast and crew
have certainly risen to the challenge that they were presented
with and are ready to jump on the rollercoaster ride that this
farce certainly is.
Sometimes it seems that the world in which we all live can
appear very mad, sad and bad so we hope that for a couple of
hours you can escape from reality, relax, sit back with us and
enjoy a dose of the best medicine I know of – laughter.

7. About the Author
MICHAEL COONEY was born and raised in London, but now
lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Danielle, where he
is a screenwriter.
His stage writing credits include a comedy, “Cash On
Delivery”, that had its world premier at the prestigious
Theatre Royal Windsor and has gone on to break box
office records throughout Europe. “Cash on Delivery”
ran for a year in London’s West End before beginning
a nationwide tour. His two stage thrillers, “The Dark
Side” and “Point of Death” have both enjoyed successful
British tours. Cooney’s stage directing credits include
“Penny for the Guy”, a thriller by David Soames, “Nil
by Mouth”, a drama by John Chapman, and the first London
tryout of the smash French comedy “Le Diner du Cons” by
Francis Verber. He also directed his own three plays
“Point of Death”, “Cash On Delivery” and “The Dark
Side”.
“Murder In Mind”, the film written by Cooney adapted from
his stage play, was produced for HBO and star Nigel
Hawthorne, Mary Louise Parker, Jimmy Smits and Jason
Scott Lee.
He has also had two children’s books published: “George
the Germ” and “Fantastic Adventures in the Land of
Wishful Thinking”.
Personal Quote
“One of the things I learned over those first five years,
where I just churned out screenplays without selling
anything is that your screenplay is going to be read a
thousand times before a single foot of film goes through
the camera, so the damn thing had better be readable. It
better be Grisham, it better be a page-turner. People
say you’ve got 30 pages to grab them. Maybe so, but
you’ve got three or four pages to show them that what
you’re doing is different. In those first few opening
pages, it is vital that the reader gets your voice, and
gets that the next few hours of reading are going to be
worth it.”

11. The Taunton Thespians have been providing live
theatre for and by the people of Taunton and
surrounding area since 1928, when Ian Hay’s “Tilly
of Bloomsbury” was staged for 3 nights at the
Lyceum Theatre (now a block of flats at the end of
Station Road). The Thespians' home is “The Place”
in Wilfred Road, Taunton.
It's fashionable to be patronising about amateur
theatre or "amdram". We're not sure why. Every year
the Thespians entertain thousands of people by:
Staging two major productions at the Brewhouse
•
Theatre
Participating in drama festivals in other
•
theatres around Somerset
Putting on in-house productions for members
•
Spending two weeks on the road with a touring
•
production every summer
We also provide Murder Mystery evenings and
Cabaret shows for parties and fund-raising events
around the area, and are developing our outreach
activities further.
To see what's happening in amateur drama in
Taunton, come along to a Club Night. There's no
charge, and you're very welcome. Just drop along to
The Place at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of any
month from October to May.
If you do fancy joining us, there’s plenty to do,
and it doesn’t have to involve getting up on stage.
Actors and actresses are always welcome, of course,
but we do need people who want to design and build
our sets, sort out costumes, do makeup and hair,
all sorts of things. Membership is only £12 a year,
and it’s just about the most fun you can have for a
pound a month!

Personal Details:
I have now reached 19 years in the acting
business, starting in the popular Hemyock
singers at a very young age. My first memory
was opening night and I had to run through the
audience up onto the stage ready to sing… yes
my trousers were too long and I managed to trip
up the stairs, head first onto the stage! I
stood up, brushed myself down and just started
singing, despite my eyes filling up with water
as my legs hurt! That slapstick comedy appears
to have haunted me up to this day!

This is my 6th show with the Thespians, andI am looking forward to returning to theBrewhouse stage once again. Previous roles haveincluded Molly in Tom Jones, Kitty in TakingSteps, Helen Burns in Jane Eyre and Ursula inMuch Ado About Nothing. Most of my appearancesso far have involved prancing around in skimpyclothes, or as in the last summer tour, playinga dirty wench ... so it is nice to play aslightly more reserved character for a change! It’s been great to be a part of the cast forthis show. Hope you enjoy it!

Earlier in the year the wonderful surroundings
of the Minack Theatre in Cornwall provided a
wonderful acting experience but the comfort of
the Brewhouse is just as warm a choice for a
return to the Taunton stage. It’s been a really
good year so far with many miles on the clock
in various guises, on stage, directing and in
front of the camera. Yet another character
to get to grips with and the thrill has not
extinguished the excitement when performing.
Rehearsals never cease and it’s straight off
to Pantoland at the Strode Theatre when COD
finishes, oh yes it is!

Personal Details:
Mr Forbright is a melancholy fellow and takes his
job seriously. His father used to say “treat the
departed, son, as it were your own flesh and blood”
and he has lived by that rule every since. That’s
true of this play and especially for our director
who has treated us with a sense of maturity and
allowed us all to express ourselves through the
characters. I have always felt that a good director
allows the actors to grow their parts at the same
time aiding their development by constructive
guidance. It has been a pleasure to play Mr
Forbright, as well as recent parts of Dr Lanyon in
Jekyll & Hyde and Bunting in Murdered to Death,
although I feel it’s about time I took a different
role, so watch this space!

Personal Details:
After the rain-soaked Summer Tour 2007 duringwhich the appalling weather washed away ouraudiences it is very comforting to be backunder a water-tight roof. I sometimes wonderhow closely one can be identified with thecharacter one plays. This is not an issuewhen the character is someone like SquireAllworthy whom everyone on stage admires. Itis a different matter when it is a characterlike Dr Chapman described as ‘mild-mannered’by the author but diminishing in status asthe play proceeds. However, it is a farceand one can draw comfort from the fact thatbelief is suspended. Enjoy the play.
