HOW	TO	SET	&	ACHIEVE	GOALS

By	Michael	Brumback
_______________________________________________________________________

Have	you	thought	about	what	you	want	to	be	doing	in	five	years’	time?	Do	you	know
what	you	want	to	have	achieved	by	the	end	of	the	day?	Goal	setting	is	a	process	that
starts	with	careful	consideration	of	what	you	want	to	achieve	and	ends	with	a	lot	of
hard	work	to	actually	do	it.	Goal	setting	not	only	allows	you	to	take	control	of	your
life’s	direction;	it	also	provides	you	a	benchmark	for	determining	whether	you	are
actually	succeeding.

I. HOW	TO	DISCOVER	YOUR	GOALS?

• Pray	and	ask	God	for	wisdom	to	reveal	your	goals.	He	knows	you
better	than	you	know	yourself.
• Ask	yourself	a	few	questions:	“What	do	I	enjoy	most?	What	excites
me	the	most?	What	am	I	most	passionate	about?
• Also	ask	yourself:	“What	am	I	good	at	doing?”	Identify	your	talents,
skills	and	gifting’s.
• Ask	a	few	trusted	friends	for	some	input	about	your	potential	to
achieve	at	something.
• Be silent for 15-20 minutes a day. Find a peaceful atmosphere.
Silence	removes	the	clutter. When	silent	don’t	try	and	figure	it	out
but	let	it	come	naturally.	You	might	feel	a	strong	impression;	have
a	vision;	hear	the	still	small	voice	in	your	spirit. It	was	King	David
who	wrote;	“He	will	lead	you	besides	still	waters” (Psalm	23:2).

II. WRITE	DOWN	YOUR	GOALS

• Most people do not have their personal goals written down on
paper. Unless you clearly write down exactly what you want to
achieve,	than	your	odds	of	success	are	considerably	reduced.
• The	physical	act	of	writing	down	a	goal	makes	it	real	and	tangible.
You	have	no	excuse	for	forgetting	about	it.	As	you	write,	use	the
word	“Will”	instead	of	“would	like	to”	or	“might.”
• A goal that is not in writing is a wish with no energy behind it
(Brian	Tracy). When	you	write	your	goals	they	start	to	become
clearer	for	you	to	pursue.
• Write down realistic yet challenging goals. Make sure they are
attainable.	That’s	how	you	can	see	if	you	are	making	progress.
• When	writing	your	goals	list	them	in	top	priority.	Your	first	goal
should	be	the	one	that	grabs	hold	of	you	the	most.
III. SET	GOALS	THAT	MOTIVATE	YOU

• When	you	have	a	strong	motivation	to	reach	your	goals,	it	means
there is value in achieving them. If your goal doesn’t mean
anything	to	you,	then	it	isn’t	worth	pursuing.
• Choose	a	goal	to	create	your	journey.	Don’t	just	set	life	goals;	think
about setting a life direction. Figure out the things that would
create	a	passionate,	meaningful,	and	compelling	journey.
• Most	goals	are	about	a	destination.	But	it	shouldn’t	be	that	way.
We	loose	sight	of	the	big	picture	and	most	important	aspect,	and
that’s enjoying the process of the journey before reaching the
destination.
• A	goal	pursued	by	desire	and	strong	motivation	is	simply	setting	a
direction in your life so the pursuit gives you the life you want.
With	the	right	focus	of	the	journey,	it	really	won’t	matter	if	you
reach	your	goal	or	not.
• Let	your	goals	serve	your	vision.	You	must	have	a	vision!	Without
a	vision	you	will	aimlessly	wonder	with	no	direction.
• The	goals	you	set	should	take	you	out	of	your	comfort	zone.	Set
goals	you	have	never	achieved	before.
• Aim	big.	Don’t	aim	small.	We	set	big	goals	so	we	can	discover	what
we	are	capable	of	accomplishing.
• When	you	have	a	strong	desire	to	advance	and	succeed	in	your	life
and career,	then	your	goals	will	drive	you	and	push you	to	leap
over	difficult	obstacles.	Nothing	will	be	impossible!

IV. DEFINE/REDEFINE	YOUR	GOALS

• The reason we refine our goals is to make them crystal clear of
what	we	want	to	achieve.
• Goals	must	not	only	be	defined,	but	also	redefined	over	and	over.
• Many	people	try	to	achieve	their	goals	before	they	have	gone	over
them	and	don’t	take	the	time	to	rewrite	them	until	they	are	clear.
• Jim	Rohn	says,	“wishes	are	fuzzy	but	goals	must	be	defined.”
• As you define and redefine your goals, make sure they have a
deadline. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of
urgency	increases	and	achievement	will	come	that	much	quicker.

V. VISUALIZE	YOUR	GOALS

• This	is	one	of	the	most	important	things	you	can	do	to	help	see
your	goals	come	to	pass.
• Once	your	goals	are	defined	then	you	can	start	meditating	upon
them	and	speaking	them	out	loud	over	and	over.	Begin	to	visualize
your	goals.	To	visualize	them	is	very	powerful	and	affective.	When
you	visualize	you	are	seeing	with	your	minds	eyes.	It’s	letting	your
imagination wonder. Envision seeing your goals complete and
achieved.
• Positive	imagination	goes	a	long	way.	Create	a	mental	picture	of
success	in	your	thought	life.	That’s	where	the	battle	is	won.	Don’t
be	limited	in	your	imagination.	It	was	Napoleon	Hill	who	said;	“tell
your	mind	what	you	want	over	and	over.”
• Imagination turns nothing into something.. When you visualize,
you	must	feel	what	it’s	like	to	have	what	you’re	longing	for.
• Success	starts	with	a	clear	picture	in	your	mind	of	what	you	really
want to achieve in life. Your mind must be ahead of your body.
What I mean is your mind already sees the finish line but your
physical	body	has	to	go	through	the	process	to	obtain	it.

VI. STAY	FOCUSED	ON	YOUR	GOALS

• You must stay completely focused on your goals and not get
distracted. Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can
achieve.	Focus	is	the	key!
• Stay focused on your goals even when you face challenges and
difficulties.	They	will	definitely	come	your	way.	But	the	good	news
is	that	tough	times	never	last	but	tough	people	do.
• It	takes	a	lot	of	mental,	spiritual	and	physical	energy	to	reach	your
goals.	That’s	why	focus	will	be	your	hidden	secret.
• No	ones	going	to	work	harder	on	your	goals	than	you.	You	must
take	responsibility	to	make	it	happen.
• Have	an	action	plan	to	accomplish	your	goals.	That	means	there	is
going	to	be	follow	through	to	what	you	put	in	writing.
• Have a strong time management schedule. You squander your
destiny	by	squandering	time.
• A practical way to stay focused on your goals is to have
accountability with a trusted friend or mentor. By doing this it
lights a fire under you to follow through. You become more
aggressive and responsible to win the victory of your personal
goals	that	mean	so	much	to	you.
• If	you	really	desire	to	achieve	your	goals	you	have	to	be	hungry;	I
mean really hungry. I believe strong hunger of passionately
wanting something really bad is what separates those who get
what	they	want	and	those	who	don’t.
• Do	not	relent	until	you	have	accomplished	what	you	set	your	heart
and	mind	upon.	Direct	your	energy	towards	achieving	your	goals.
Pray	much.	Stay	focused!

SETTING AND ACHIEVING GOALS

  • 1. HOW TO SET & ACHIEVE GOALS By Michael Brumback _______________________________________________________________________ Have you thought about what you want to be doing in five years’ time? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of the day? Goal setting is a process that starts with careful consideration of what you want to achieve and ends with a lot of hard work to actually do it. Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life’s direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding. I. HOW TO DISCOVER YOUR GOALS? • Pray and ask God for wisdom to reveal your goals. He knows you better than you know yourself. • Ask yourself a few questions: “What do I enjoy most? What excites me the most? What am I most passionate about? • Also ask yourself: “What am I good at doing?” Identify your talents, skills and gifting’s. • Ask a few trusted friends for some input about your potential to achieve at something. • Be silent for 15-20 minutes a day. Find a peaceful atmosphere. Silence removes the clutter. When silent don’t try and figure it out but let it come naturally. You might feel a strong impression; have a vision; hear the still small voice in your spirit. It was King David who wrote; “He will lead you besides still waters” (Psalm 23:2). II. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS • Most people do not have their personal goals written down on paper. Unless you clearly write down exactly what you want to achieve, than your odds of success are considerably reduced. • The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real and tangible. You have no excuse for forgetting about it. As you write, use the word “Will” instead of “would like to” or “might.” • A goal that is not in writing is a wish with no energy behind it (Brian Tracy). When you write your goals they start to become clearer for you to pursue. • Write down realistic yet challenging goals. Make sure they are attainable. That’s how you can see if you are making progress. • When writing your goals list them in top priority. Your first goal should be the one that grabs hold of you the most.
  • 2. III. SET GOALS THAT MOTIVATE YOU • When you have a strong motivation to reach your goals, it means there is value in achieving them. If your goal doesn’t mean anything to you, then it isn’t worth pursuing. • Choose a goal to create your journey. Don’t just set life goals; think about setting a life direction. Figure out the things that would create a passionate, meaningful, and compelling journey. • Most goals are about a destination. But it shouldn’t be that way. We loose sight of the big picture and most important aspect, and that’s enjoying the process of the journey before reaching the destination. • A goal pursued by desire and strong motivation is simply setting a direction in your life so the pursuit gives you the life you want. With the right focus of the journey, it really won’t matter if you reach your goal or not. • Let your goals serve your vision. You must have a vision! Without a vision you will aimlessly wonder with no direction. • The goals you set should take you out of your comfort zone. Set goals you have never achieved before. • Aim big. Don’t aim small. We set big goals so we can discover what we are capable of accomplishing. • When you have a strong desire to advance and succeed in your life and career, then your goals will drive you and push you to leap over difficult obstacles. Nothing will be impossible! IV. DEFINE/REDEFINE YOUR GOALS • The reason we refine our goals is to make them crystal clear of what we want to achieve. • Goals must not only be defined, but also redefined over and over. • Many people try to achieve their goals before they have gone over them and don’t take the time to rewrite them until they are clear. • Jim Rohn says, “wishes are fuzzy but goals must be defined.” • As you define and redefine your goals, make sure they have a deadline. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker. V. VISUALIZE YOUR GOALS • This is one of the most important things you can do to help see your goals come to pass. • Once your goals are defined then you can start meditating upon them and speaking them out loud over and over. Begin to visualize
  • 3. your goals. To visualize them is very powerful and affective. When you visualize you are seeing with your minds eyes. It’s letting your imagination wonder. Envision seeing your goals complete and achieved. • Positive imagination goes a long way. Create a mental picture of success in your thought life. That’s where the battle is won. Don’t be limited in your imagination. It was Napoleon Hill who said; “tell your mind what you want over and over.” • Imagination turns nothing into something.. When you visualize, you must feel what it’s like to have what you’re longing for. • Success starts with a clear picture in your mind of what you really want to achieve in life. Your mind must be ahead of your body. What I mean is your mind already sees the finish line but your physical body has to go through the process to obtain it. VI. STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR GOALS • You must stay completely focused on your goals and not get distracted. Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve. Focus is the key! • Stay focused on your goals even when you face challenges and difficulties. They will definitely come your way. But the good news is that tough times never last but tough people do. • It takes a lot of mental, spiritual and physical energy to reach your goals. That’s why focus will be your hidden secret. • No ones going to work harder on your goals than you. You must take responsibility to make it happen. • Have an action plan to accomplish your goals. That means there is going to be follow through to what you put in writing. • Have a strong time management schedule. You squander your destiny by squandering time. • A practical way to stay focused on your goals is to have accountability with a trusted friend or mentor. By doing this it lights a fire under you to follow through. You become more aggressive and responsible to win the victory of your personal goals that mean so much to you. • If you really desire to achieve your goals you have to be hungry; I mean really hungry. I believe strong hunger of passionately wanting something really bad is what separates those who get what they want and those who don’t. • Do not relent until you have accomplished what you set your heart and mind upon. Direct your energy towards achieving your goals. Pray much. Stay focused!
