There are 36 different types of ocean dolphins and 5
river dolphins.

Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to
whales and porpoises.
Dolphins have to breath air.
When they want to sleep half of their brain is
awake. Sometimes they sleep close to the surface
with their blow hole sticking out of the water.
4. More Facts
Dolphins are typically 8ft long.
They have a long lifespan. The bottle nose
can live 40yrs and the orca (closely related)
can be 70 or 80 yrs old.
They mostly live in shallow areas of tropical
climates and oceans.
Dolphins love to play, are very active, and are
known to follow ships and leap high out of
the water.

Their brain is 40% larger than a humans.
They can turn 180 degrees.
They are larger than the grey dolphin.
They live in the Amazon.
They eat small turtles, crustaceans, crabs,
catfish , and piranhas.
Instead of a dorsal fin they have a hump.
When they’re little they are gray as they
grow up they turn pink.
6. Echolocation
When dolphins are in murky waters or in the dark
parts of the ocean they can’t see. They use
echolocation to find food or other dolphins. Dolphins
can make a high pitched clicking sound. When the
click hits a object some of the sound will echo back.
By listening to the echo and estimating the time it
took to come back they can guess the distance of the
object.
