1905 - CAMH was called “Hospital for the Insane, Toronto”
1919 - CAMH name was changed to “ Ontario Hospital,
Toronto”
1950 - Doctors discovered that baths calmed their patients
down therefore used “baths” as a treatment.
May 11 2011- CAMH raised over $108 million dollars with
the help of $10 million gift from Bell Canada.

3. History of CAMH
• The Queen St Location opened on January 26,1850 .
• CAMH Queen St location has also obtained an agreement with the Toronto
Heritage Conservatory Strategy to govern repairs to the outside of the buildings as
a historic site ( The walls)
• First known as the Provincial Lunatic Asylum , which then turned into the
Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in 1998.
• First govern by the Provincial Government then became a public hospital in 1998
• CAMH resulted from a 1997 report made by the HSRC *Health Service Restructing
Committee)
• CAMH officially was made in 1998, when 5 of the Mental Health organizations
( The forger Addiction Research Foundation, The Clarke institute of Psychiatry ,
The Queen St Mental healthcare, The Queen St Mental health care institute and
the Donwood institute)merged together to create the Center for Addiction and
Mental Health, which is affiliated with the University of Toronto
• Has become the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital
• Combines clinical care, research and education policy

“Our focus at CAMH is on client-centered care. We
recognize that everyone is different and that each
client has individual social, physical, emotional,
spiritual and psychological needs. Wherever
possible, the care provided incorporates the
preferences, needs, aspirations and cultural beliefs
of each individual into the treatment plan.
CAMH supports diversity and strives to be sensitive
to race, culture, ethnicity, gender, age, abilities,
religion and sexual orientation. Clients, their
families and significant others are all active partners
throughout the care process.”

5. Services
CAMH is a community based organization to the wellbeing
and recovery of its patients suffering from addictions and
mental health disorders, the primary goal of CAMH is to
rehabilitate patients so that they can become functioning
members or society, CAMH does this is many ways. The
community support and research unit (CSRU) created by
CAMH to help with life after illness this is achieved in many
ways, the CSRU help patients with issues such as housing,
income, employment and/ or education issues. The program
is committed to empowering people with mental health
and /or substance use problems and encourages client
participation in all aspects of their work.
