2. BREAKDOWN OF KEY SELLING POINTS
âą Cast: A famous actor/actress within the film would be a great way of bringing
success for the film. This is something that could be promoted in the trailer
through shots of the actor/actress and credits. The age of the main character
might also be a key selling point as people that are of a similar age or the same
gender may be able to relate to their feelings.
âą Plot: The plot needs to be well portrayed in the trailer to help the audience
identify the narrative and the characters. Although the ending and twists must
not be disclosed, the audience need a basic understanding of the story before
they see the film.
âą Genre: It is also important as this will influence peoples decision of whether the
film is for them or not. If they are fans of thrillers they will definitely be
interested in seeing the film. The genre must be clear in the trailer as it needs to
be emphasised that it is not a light-hearted plot.
âą Trailer: This is one of the most obvious and important key selling points of the
movie. The trailer has to be successful in order to sell the film. If somebody
goes to see another film and sees a really enticing trailer they may go and see
that film next.
3. WHAT SHOULD BE SHOWN IN MY TRAILER?
âą One of the first things that should be shown at the beginning of the
trailer is a brief clip of Lauren witnessing the initial murder. This
needs to be brief as we donât want to give away the main action, but
although its brief, it should be shown as itâs one of the most
important parts as it fuels the rest of the story.
âą After this, the next bit that should be shown is Laurens feeling of
paranoia and thoughts of being stalked. Shots of her looking behind
her as she walks down the street and feeling uncomfortable in her
house.
âą Following this should be shots of her just before she is kidnapped, in
her home on her own. This may suggest to the audience that she is
not alone and she is in danger.
4. WHAT SHOULD BE SHOWN IN MY TRAILER?
âą The next part will be one of the most important parts of the trailer as it will
show the audience a glimpse of the main action. It is the moment that
Lauren is kidnapped by the masked murderer. For this I could possibly use a
shot that shows Lauren getting out of the shower and looking into the
mirror, freezing at the sight of the murder over her shoulder. This would
add fear for the audience (a main convention of thrillers).
âą Following this, the pace will pick up and shows will be successively shown of
her being dragged into an abandoned garage and threatened by the
murderer.
âą At this point we are shown detectives trying to work out what has happened,
using a board to pin up images and text relating to the murder. The
detectives will receive a note also, written by the murder explaining that
they have to find her by 0:00. There will be a quick shot of this.
5. WHAT SHOULD BE SHOWN IN MY TRAILER?
âą This is when the advert begins to end and the music builds with
the pace of the shots.
âą We see close ups of the clock ticking, getting nearer and nearer
to 0:00 and close-ups of the faces of the characters like Lauren
and the detectives, adding tension and emotion.
âą As we see the clock tick to 0:00 the trailer ends with loud bursts
of sound, adding a dramatic ending. The final moments of the
trailer do not make it clear what has happened, meaning the
audience have to go and see the film to find out what happened.
6. WHAT SHOULD BE SHOWN IN MY TRAILER?
âą There will be inter-titles throughout the trailer, lengthening it
and also supporting the plot, helping the audience follow the
storyline. This will be accompanied by a voice over and dialogue,
especially from the murderer, seeming threatening and
aggressive. The voice will be slightly computerized, almost
making the murderer seem inhumane.
âą The trailer will end with an inter-title displaying the name of the
film and then the release date or âComing Soonâ.
