How To Keep A Job- Youth of today

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Introduce yourself. Talk about your background and your experience in working/employing with the youth of today. I am here today to provide you with information that will help guide you and help you grow into a successful career. Opportunities you receive from working are endless and can start your future in the right direction. Gaining work experience at a young age helps you prepare for many future endeavors not just in the work force. It will enable you to achieve and realize your fullest potential. I would also emphasize the word “YO” so this presentation may stick in their mind……(Make a joke using this word)
  2. The path that your life will take starts now. Getting a job will enhance your life with many opportunities and experiences that will help you be successful in the future.
  3. Ask the students/audience for feedback on this question and go to next slide quickly
  4. Continue with feedback from the audience and comment on the cartoon.
  5. The hard work is not over yet. Once you have accepted the job, the real work begins. It was not easy getting the job and now you must figure out how to stay in the job. Read the slide. There are factors that will influence your success with the company. These factors will help you keep the job and grow within it. Lets review some of these points.
  6. Read the slide. This is a summary of how you can become successful and keep the job
  7. ATTENDANCE………………Arrive on time, every day. Return from lunch and break promptly. This type of punctuality demonstrates respect for others. If you are always late, you are showing your employer that you do not value your position. Call offs should be only when necessary. If you want to go to the football game and you forgot to request that day off and you are scheduled, you should work it. Use example of when you are on a sports team and everyone is counting on you to be there because you are one of the starters. You arrive 15 minutes late. What does this do to the team? Let students answer…….(disappointed, mad, sad, they think you don’t care about the team, irresponsible) This is the same impression that your employer and your fellow employees will have if you are late. Ask students “ Why do you think you should give employers at least a 2 hour notice when you have to call off?” Explain the importance of filling your position and if the employer is unable to fill what that does to the entire team. Also explain why requesting too much time off is not acceptable. Not responsible to job, reputation with other co-workers becomes undependable and they feel they can not count on you
  8. Your attitude is the biggest single factor which affects your job performance. A simple smile will go a long way. Staying positive through change or when doing a task that is not your favorite thing to do will help you be successful in your job and life. I bet there are many employees that have stressful things going on in their life outside of work. I am one of them….but, you must get past those issues and forget about them while at work. You need to give 100% while working and be able to leave them at the front door. Greeting everyone you come in contact with shows enthusiasm toward your job and excellent customer service. Treating your fellow employees with respect and as you would like to be treated creates a positive environment for everyone to work in. Example: Think of a project that you and others had to work on together. When one of the people on the project team just doesn’t want to do their part because they think the project is stupid or because they seem to be texting on their cell more than working on the project………how does that make you feel?............... Bad attitudes = poor performance and poor performance = NOT keeping a job
  9. Being a team player means having the ability to get along with others and showing your support in the overall success of the company. What does it take to be a team player……….. Complaining shows your unwillingness to be a part of the team. Negativity drags others down and creates unsuccessful projects. You can count on a responsible team member who gets work done and does his fair share to work hard and meet commitments. Team players treat fellow team members with courtesy and consideration — not just some of the time but consistently. In addition, they show understanding and the appropriate support of other team members to help get the job done. Teams often deal with changing conditions — and often create changes themselves. Good team players roll with the punches; they adapt and are flexible to ever-changing situations. Good team players are active participants and contribute. They come prepared for team meetings and listen and speak up in discussions. They're fully engaged in the work of the team and do not sit passively on the sidelines. Good team players, despite differences they may have with other team members concerning style and perspective, figure out ways to work together to solve problems and get work done.
  10. Policies and Procedures are the strategic link between the Company's Vision and its day-to-day operations. But why is that so important? It's because well written policies & procedures allow employees to understand their roles and responsibilities within predefined limits. Basically, policies & procedures allow management to guide operations without constant intervention. Understanding the policies, rules and regulations is a very important aspect of your job. Employers depend on you to follow these policies and if not…..you may be fired. Ask questions if you do not understand. Take the employee handbook with you and leave it in your locker at work so you can refer to it if you are unsure of policies. For example: You need to request a day off. How do you do this??? You need to know this as it can cause you to follow the rules or not follow the rules. Once again NOT FOLLOWING RULES=NOT KEEPING THE JOB. Listen carefully when told how to do a task. Follow the dress code…. IE: If it is business casual, make sure what you are wearing is appropriate. Tennis shoes would not be business casual. Work by the rules. IE: If your supervisor tells you that you must stay at your register and greet all customers that come through the door, then do not be walking throughout the store. The rule is to stay in your assigned area and greet. Follow all safety regulations. The orientation and handbook will help you realize what is safe and unsafe in the workplace. IE: Climbing on a shelf to reach something up high would not be appropriate. Getting a ladder to reach what you need would be.
  11. Dependability is a highly desirable work trait and it’s something no matter how skilled one is or isn’t everybody has the ability to offer their employer. If you want more from your job, ask yourself honestly how dependable an employee are you? If you are undependable at work then the business suffers and that means reduced profits. I can tell you about past opportunities concerning employee advancement and raises from a management perspective……….it is very difficult to pass over an employee that is dependable. It’s equally difficult to pass over somebody qualified that does a good job when they are there, but has dependability problems, BUT………. I remember having to make a choice between two employees one time for a promotion and I chose the one who was less skilled but more dependable. A big part of job performance includes dependability. It isn’t about how good you are if you are not at work most of the time.
  12. Initiative is seeing or knowing what needs to be done and doing it. Good work habits start with taking pride in your work. If you take pride in your job, you will want to do anything that will help you work better. This includes taking initiative. How do you do this……. Imagine you have just completed your assigned job and no one has told you what you are to do next. What would you do? Do you sit down and wait for someone to show up and get instructions from them? Initiative is doing something without being told to do it. All of us get to the place in our work when we cannot go on. What do we do? No one is around to ask or tell us what to do. We use our own initiative and look for things that need to be done. Most employers expect their employees to take some initiative. Be proactive in your thoughts. If you know the store is going to be really busy today then think of things that need to be done prior to the store opening and do them first. If there is a lot of down time in your position, call a supervisor and ask for something to do. Time will fly by when staying busy. Seek out opportunities to learn. The more you know the more flexible you are. Supervisors appreciate and value these employees which in the long run will create not only a better raise but help you become successful in your job. Taking initiative shows leadership abilities!
  13. An important factor in individual success is COMMITMENT. Commitment ignites action. To commit is to pledge yourself to a certain purpose and achieving what you set out to do. Effectively demonstrating commitment to others, to the organization's basic principles, and to oneself is never easy. The truth is, demonstrating commitment is hard work. Give good effort in the task at hand. Do not give up. Ask for help if you are unable to finish by yourself. Do not be sloppy in your work because you are hurrying up to go home. Take time and do your job properly. Be enthused about the task or project and never give reasons to your supervisors as to why you can not do something. Stay positive and let the supervisor that you will give it your all. If you tell your boss you are going to finish a project or work extra hours then do as you say. Do not become undependable. Be loyal to your employer. Do not talk bad about the company to your friends or employees. Do not complain or divulge confidential information about work on Facebook or My space. If an employee chooses to identify themselves as working at a specific company on a web site there are guidelines you must adhere to. Read your handbook and make sure you follow the policies. Commitment is most difficult and most readily proven during tough times. How someone weathers the storms most clearly demonstrates their basic beliefs. Fortunately, paying the price that commitment commands has payoffs worth the cost - a reputation for integrity and, even more important, the commitment of others in return.
  14. Getting a job is a success in itself. But, an even greater success is keeping it, learning from it and taking all your experiences and applying them into your future. Click to present each point one at a time.
  15. Opportunities you receive from working are endless and can start your future in the right direction. Gaining work experience at a young age helps you prepare for many future endeavors not just in the work force. It will enable you to achieve and realize your fullest potential. Don’t miss out. Stay focused, set goals and achieve your dreams by beginning with KEEPING A JOB! The world is at your finger tips!
