2. What is an ENVIRONMENT?
• An "environment" is the whole of
surrounding things. Surroundings are defined
by a central entity. In ecology, environment
refers to the surroundings of humankind.
Generally, environment refers to the
biological, physical and social things on the
earth or in inhabitable space outside the
earth's atmosphere.
3. Environmental Issues
• How bad is the damage to ecosystems?
• Is the Earth overpopulated?
• Are we running out of Energy Resources?
• Can we feed ourselves, sustainably?
• What’s the “truth” about climate change?
• Why are we so wasteful?
• Are we poisoning our air?
• Are we causing the extinction of species?
• What can you do to help?
4. Environment health and safety
• Environmental health and safety can only be achieved if
anyone of us understands responsibilities that are
necessary if we want to make our environment safe and
healthy. Environmental health and safety is the first
required step needed for successful environment
protection. As said before in order to ensure maximum
efficiency of different environmental health and safety
programs it is vital to include as many people as possible.
To make our environment safe and healthy we need to
prevent entrance of different hazardous materials. Such
hazardous materials are for instance asbestos, lead, mold,
and different other types of waste that could influence on
health and safety of our environment.
5. How you can help your environment...
• The best way to help our environment is to develop global
ecological conscience and establish a new set of values where our
environment and nature in general would rank above money and
power. However, in a world driven primarily by the hunger for
money such ideas are nothing but a nice dream and an utopia. The
environmental condition of our planet gets worse by the each day;
the negative impact of climate change is already knocking on our
door, there's also a huge biodiversity loss because many plants and
animals are going extinct, water and air pollution is killing millions
of people across the globe, and our forests, especially rainforests
are disappearing.
6. What is the environment in the
context of health?
In the medical sense, the environment includes the surroundings,
conditions or influences that affect an organism (Davis, 1989). Along
these lines, Last (2001) defined the environment for the International
Epidemiological Association as: "All that which is external to the human
Host can be divided into physical, biological, social, cultural, etc., any or all
of which can influence health status of populations …". According to this
definition, the environment would include anything that is not genetic,
although it could be argued that even genes are influenced by the
environment in the short or long-term.
7. A Conceptual Framework
The ultimate goal of environmental
education is to produce individuals who
exhibit the “4 A’s.”
• Awareness
• Appreciation
• Advocacy
• Activism
8. Good and Bad news about
Environment
Good news
• World food production tripled
since 1950.
• Overall food prices fell.
• World grain supplies were at
near record highs because of
technological innovations.
• Diets in MDCs are at an all-
time caloric high.
• Per acre production is very
high.
Bad news
• Population growth rate is
faster than “food growth.”
• Food prices are rising now.
• Per capita grain supplies are
falling at 1% per year.
• 2 billion people in the world
are undernourished.
• Damage to soils and
pollution are increasing
9. Our Waste Stream
• 38 % paper products
• 13 % yard waste
• 10 % food wastes
• 9 % plastics
• 8 % metals
• 6 % glass
• 5 % wood
• 10 % other
(Nearly all of these wastes could be recycled, but
only about 25% actually are done)
• A Total Haul of over 200 MILLION tons per year; 2/3 of a ton
per person per year!
10. Conclusion
• We have to protect our environment and
make it sustainable for our future generations.
We have borrowed it from our
forefathers.Mother Earth has nurtured us
from our childhood and now its time we repay
it back. We must remember that nature can
survive without us but we cannot survive
without it.
