i
i

.6...r was first reported in 1981, by the United States Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. The condition ¡s caused by the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which attacks the T-cell lymphocytes of the
immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to serious ¡llnesses that are normally
repelled by'a healthy ¡mmune system. HIV is transferred through blood and
other body f luids. It is not spread by casual contact. Three main groups appear to
be at risk: those engaging in unprotected sexual contact, those sharing
unsterilized. drug needles, and hemophiliacs who receives regular blood
transfusions (This is rare, as blood transfusions have been tested for HIV and
AIDS for the past decades)

11 ^±£5~~........¡s a condition ¡n which there ¡s an uncontrolled level of sugar ¡n the
blood, which ¡s caused by the body's inability to use ¡nsulin. Sugars f rom digested
food usually stimulate the páncreas to produce ¡nsulin; the insulin allows the cells
to use the sugar as a source of energy f or their normal f unctions. A person with
15 diabetes cannot use the ¡nsulin, causing the sugar ¡n the bloodstream to rise
dramatically. Hyperglycemias are caused by too much sugar in, the blood;
'„ hypoglycaemia is caused by low blood sugar levéis. Type I diabetes (of ten called
juvenile diabetes) usually affects young people, ¡n whom the páncreas produces
no ¡nsulin. Type II diabetes (often called adult-onset diabetes) can affect any
20 age group,; but mostly older adults. In adult-onset diabetes, the páncreas
gradually loses its ability to produce enough insulin over the years^Risk factors
include obesity (fat cells use up ¡nsulin), decreases ¡n exercise (sugar ¡s used by
the muscles) and heredity (adult-onset diabetes often runs in families) The blood
sugar levéis are usually kept in check with oral medications, exercise, and diet,
25 but left unchecked, they coúld lead to complications such as diabetic retinopathy
(or visión loss due to elevated blood sugar level, which ¡s harmful to the small
blood vessels that bring nutrients and oxygen to the eyes), kidney failure, and
impotence. Poor circulation ¡n the extremities sometimes causes gangrene,
creating the need to ampútate to save the patient's lif e.

1. Lea la siguiente frase extraída del texto. Preste atención al adverbio resaltado. ¿Qué
indica dicho adverbio?
"Type I diabetes (often called juvenile diabetes) usually affects young people, in whom the
páncreas produces no insulin." (L. 17-18)
seldom, occasionally, hardly ever/ rarely, never (0%)

VITAMIN E
Vitamin E is the major anti-oxidant nutrient which retards cellular aging due to oxidation, It supplies
oxygen to the blood which is then carried to the heart and other organs, Thus it alleviates fatigue; aids in
bringing nourishment to cells; strengthens the capillary walls and prevenís the red blood cells from
destructive poisons; prevents and dissolves blood clots; has also been used by doctors who want to
prevent sterility, muscular dystrophy, calcium deposits in blood walls and heart conditions.
This vitamin presents several deficiency symptoms which may lead to a rupture of red blood cells, loss
of reproductive powers, lack of sexual vitality, abnormal fat deposits in muscles, degenerative changes
in the changes in the heart and other muscles; dry skin.
SPECIAL NOTE: There are several types of Vitamin E available. D-Alpha Tocopherol (100% Natural) is
10 4 times more potent in biológica! activity than d1-Alpha Tocopherol (Synthetic) Vitamin E. For exampíe;
