BEWARING EN ONTSLUITING VAN MULTIMEDIALE DATA IN VLAANDEREN
Wazig en haperend beeld op afgedraaide videotapes, benevelde klanken
op verweerde audiocassettes, verschroeide nitraatfilm, onherstelbaar
beschadigde optische en harde schijven. Opslagmedia worden vroeg of laat
het slachtoffer van technologische veroudering en culturele vergetelheid.
Wereldwijd staan beheerders van mediacollecties en archieven voor een
enorme uitdaging. Ons audiovisueel erfgoed, een van onze rijkste culturele
erfenissen, dreigt onherroepelijk verloren te gaan.

Tegelijkertijd bieden moderne digitale technologieën nieuwe mogelijkheden.
Alle vormen van informatie kunnen vandaag digitaal opgeslagen en verdeeld
worden via telecommunicatienetwerken. Ons culturele geheugen kent een
ongeziene flexibiliteit, balancerend tussen fysiek en virtueel, lokaal en
globaal, formeel en informeel. Hoe gaan omroepen, musea, archieven,
bibliotheken en andere instellingen om met deze nieuwe paradigma’s?
Welke richtlijnen worden gebruikt om ons audiovisuele geheugen veilig t
e stellen voor toekomstige generaties? Hoe kunnen we duurzame archieven R ik Van de Walle
opzetten? Hoe kunnen we een evenwicht vinden tussen integriteit en
bruikbaarheid, tussen bewaren en levend houden?

Dit boek gaat op zoek naar antwoorden en baseert zich daarvoor op praktisch
en theoretisch onderzoek uitgevoerd in het kader van het BOM-vl project
(Bewaring en Ontsluiting van Multimediale data in Vlaanderen).
Rik Van de Walle, hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep IBBT-Multimedialab-UGent,
leidde het project BOM-vl in goede banen. Deze publicatie kwam tot stand
in samenwerking met de Vlaamse Regering en diverse partners.

The role provided by each of the entities in figure 4-1 is described briefly as follows:
• digital preservation software developed
Ingest: This entity provides the services and functions to accept Submission Information
Packages (SIPs) from Producers (or from internal elements under Administration control)
and prepare the contents for storage and management within the archive. Ingest functions
include receiving SIPs, performing quality assurance on SIPs, generating an Archival
as one end-to-end application
Information Package (AIP) which complies with the archive’s data formatting and
documentation standards, extracting Descriptive Information from the AIPs for inclusion in
the archive database, and coordinating updates to Archival Storage and Data Management.
Archival Storage: This entity provides the services and functions for the storage,
maintenance and retrieval of AIPs. Archival Storage functions include receiving AIPs from
Ingest and adding them to permanent storage, managing the storage hierarchy, refreshing the
