Automatic Control of Irrigation Systems Aiming at High Energy efficiency in
Rice Crops
2012
DESCRIPTION
This paper presents a complete solution for the automated irrigation of rice crops using water level
sensors, remote supervision system (SCADA) and wireless communication (GPRS). The
proposed system is tested in four irrigation areas of small scale (10m x 20m). Ultrasonic sensors
are used to measure the water level in the field. The control of the crop conditions is done by a
dedicated controller, which eliminates the need for a computer on site. In addition, the controller
has an interface that allows access to its parameters and also switching over to a standard
operation in case of loss of communication with the supervisory system. The main result of this
work is the efficient use of water and electricity on the farm .

Centralized Heart Rate Monitoring Telemetry System Using ZigBee Wireless
Sensor Network
2012
DESCRIPTION
Recent advances in wireless communication standards and medical monitoring system have made
it possible to effectively combine mesh networking with Non-Invasive medical application which
is Pulse Oximeter in order to create reliable, large-scale wireless Network. This Mesh networking
will enable doctors and nurses to observe and monitor a number of patients simultaneously from
one location without being with the patient's physically. This project is mainly concerned about
monitoring patient's condition simultaneously via Wireless Mesh Network. Wireless Mesh
Network is a network that allows data transmitted to the node's nearest neighbours and it can be
easily maintained as each node are self-configuring and self-healing. Data obtained from multiple
pulse oximeters will be stored and processed using Arduino-Nano, then transmitted to a
centralized unit, where the information for multiple oximeter will be displayed simultaneously.
The efficiency of data transmission was monitored and verified. Mesh networking for pulse
oximeter had been successfully design to show the active pulse oximeter. Besides, the data
transmit and received by the XBee were accurate and it had been proved through several
observations.

Cloud-Enabled Home Automation Gateway with the Support for UPnP Over
IPv4/IPv6 and 6LoWPAN
2012
DESCRIPTION
The most recent requests for interoperability between the different devices within a home
automation system have brought IP-based protocols to the attention in this area. However, a
number of hurdles need to be overcome so that the IP connection to home devices could become
enabled, the most important being the requests for a large address space and low power
consumption. In this paper we present a solution of a home gateway device with the ability to
interact with IPv6-enabled home devices over 6LoWPAN, with regard to the increased address
space and low power consumption, respectively. Additionally, the gateway supports the
traditional IPv4 interfacing over WiFi and Ethernet. UPnP over IPv6 is fully enabled so that all
the devices can be easily found by UPnP discovery from any node in the network. Finally, the
gateway populates the discovered devices to a cloud server, which in turn enables a variety of web
applications for home control to interact to home devices by using asynchronous API calls.

Context-Aware Platform with User Availability Estimation and Light-Based
Announcements
2012
DESCRIPTION
As the number of computer-based systems and consumer gadgets is growing, users are becoming
increasingly overwhelmed by the requests for attention coming from this variety of devices. In
addition, technology has quickened the pace of life and work to the extent that interaction between
people has become more frequent. Dealing with both social and device-driven interruptions has
become one of the important goals of context-aware systems of today. This paper proposes a
context-aware platform that can help mitigate the negative effects of interruptions in human work
and living. The platform uses a scalable set of sensors to estimate user availability in the home or
office environment. This information is announced to possible interrupters (e.g., household
members and software application) by using a web portal, lighting effects, or interfaces to a home
automation system or any other interested entity in the local network. This paper presents several
contributions to the field. Platform architecture is considered scalable enough to fit to a variety of
today’s consumer devices and smart home systems. The experiments were conducted to show the
effectiveness of the platform usage within a living room area, as opposed to the traditional office
contexts where the availability tends to be easier to determine. The last contribution is related to
the novel method and the evaluation of the use of lighting announcements of availability instead
of the traditional inefficient busy flags.

Controlling Physical Objects via the Internet using the Arduino Platform over
802.15.4 Networks
2012
DESCRIPTION
In this work, we expanded the Arduino's capabilities by adding an 802.15.4 wireless module, in
order to expose its functionality as a Web of Things node. The second contribution of our work is
a careful description of the necessary steps to make a heterogeneous network interoperate and the
implementation of a network stack for the 4 most representative hardware platforms, as used by
the relevant research community (Arduino, SunSPOT, TelosB, iSense), in the form of a software
library, named mkSense, which enables their intercommunication. Moreover, we describe the
design and implementation of a software library which can be used for building “intelligent
software” for the Web of Things.
9 MBZC12-09 Design and Prototype of an In-Vehicle Road Sign Delivery System using RFID 2012
DESCRIPTION
The development of an RFID based system that alerts vehicle drivers about approaching road
oddities at an optimum distance before encountering them. The objective is to design a wireless
system that delivers road signs (and other road-related information) to the commuter inside his/her
vehicle visually and aurally, at an appropriate distance before encountering the corresponding
road aberrations. The final aim is to bring about a change in the current road safety paradigm by
providing a more efficient and ergonomic electronic alternative to static road signs. In addition to
reducing dependency on road signs, the device will also aid in averting accidents and traffic jams,
and in better implementing traffic law and order.

11 MBZC12-11 Design of Charging Unit for Electric Vehicles Using solar power 2012
DESCRIPTION
This paper presents a charging process undergone for electric vehicles in parking lot areas. It
allows us to evaluate a wide range of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Plug-in
Electric Vehicles (PEVs) charging scenarios and the corresponding control strategies. In addition,
this allows us to explore a variety of communication technologies for a PHEV/PEV charging
facility. The charging scheme used here is monitored by Arduino board. Some vehicles are parked
during the day at workplace parking garages and can be charged from the solar energy using
Photo-Voltaic (PV) cell based charging facilities. The charging with solar energy helps to reduce
the emissions from the power grid but increases the cost of charging. Moreover, it offers more
flexibility to prepare for the emergence of new technologies (e.g., Vehicle-to-Grid, Vehicle-to-
Building, and Smart Charging), which will become a reality in the near future. The simulation
results provide a general overview of the impact of the proposed charging scenarios in terms of
voltage profiles, peak demand, and charging cost.

DSP-Based Audio Processing for Controlling a Mobile Robot using a Spherical
Microphone Array
2012
DESCRIPTION
Service robots are designed to assist humans in a wide variety of tasks. In order to do this, it may
be particularly useful to provide the robot with spatial hearing- the ability to receive commands
and understand where they are coming from. This study suggests using a spherical microphone
array as the basis for a modular system for spatial audio processing which can be fitted on mobile
(or static) service robots. The study relates to a recently developed prototype robot fitted with a
low-order spherical microphone array. The robot is a small-scale table-top robot based around an
Arduino uno micro-controller. Planar movement is achieve using a two-wheel drive and steering
mechanism. Elevation is achieved using a robotic arm. The goal of the study is to reach full spatial
control of the robot through spatial audio commands. Localization includes direction and distance
using near-field and far-field algorithm.
Several approaches to system design are discussed, and a DSP-based stand-alone system is
presented. A first-order spherical microphone array was built and various source types were
tested. Issues such as reverberation and multiple source tracking are also addressed.

23 MBZC12-23 Simulation Environment based on Smartphones for Cloud Computing Robots 2012
DESCRIPTION
Cloud computing and smartphone technologies are becoming pervasive in daily life. Cloud
robotics, which apply such technologies to robots, is capturing the spotlight as an attractive
implementation example. However, when implementing a real time robot service on a wide-range
network, it is desirable to grasp the influence of network delay on the robot’s actions and the user's
experience in advance. Therefore, we propose a simulation environment for Cloud computing
robots. This simulation environment replicates the WAN environment between the robot and the
Cloud server, and allows the behavior of the Cloud computing robot to be observed in real time.
We prototype and evaluate the performance of the proposed simulation environment.

SMaRTCaR: An Integrated Smartphone-based Platform to Support Traffic
Management Applications
2012
DESCRIPTION
A massive research effort is recently going in the direction of interfacing cars with smartphones to
offer value added services to driver and passengers. Such an interest is motivated by the large
popularity of smartphones and by the observation that vehicles can act as effective collectors of
information from the surrounding environment. Indeed, modern cars are endowed with several
sensors forming an in-vehicle network, which provides kinematics information, automotive
diagnostic services, etc. Cars can be further equipped with external sensing devices to monitor
specific physical parameters, such as pollution, humidity, temperature, etc. If properly collected
and delivered, such data can contribute to make the road transport greener, smarter, and safer.
With the purpose of supporting and improving data collection and distribution, in this paper a
smartphone-based platform is designed that exploits low-cost dedicated hardware to interact with
sensors on board and in the vehicle surroundings. Retrieved data are classified and then
opportunistically transmitted via the most convenient wireless interface to the specific remote
control and monitoring center. A prototype is also developed to assess the technological feasibility
of our conceived platform.

PH: 8098 043 777 E-MAIL: mblazan2011@gmail.com Page 2 5 MBZC12-05 Centralized Heart Rate Monitoring Telemetry System Using ZigBee Wireless Sensor Network 2012 DESCRIPTION Recent advances in wireless communication standards and medical monitoring system have made it possible to effectively combine mesh networking with Non-Invasive medical application which is Pulse Oximeter in order to create reliable, large-scale wireless Network. This Mesh networking will enable doctors and nurses to observe and monitor a number of patients simultaneously from one location without being with the patient's physically. This project is mainly concerned about monitoring patient's condition simultaneously via Wireless Mesh Network. Wireless Mesh Network is a network that allows data transmitted to the node's nearest neighbours and it can be easily maintained as each node are self-configuring and self-healing. Data obtained from multiple pulse oximeters will be stored and processed using Arduino-Nano, then transmitted to a centralized unit, where the information for multiple oximeter will be displayed simultaneously. The efficiency of data transmission was monitored and verified. Mesh networking for pulse oximeter had been successfully design to show the active pulse oximeter. Besides, the data transmit and received by the XBee were accurate and it had been proved through several observations. 6 MBZC12-06 Cloud-Enabled Home Automation Gateway with the Support for UPnP Over IPv4/IPv6 and 6LoWPAN 2012 DESCRIPTION The most recent requests for interoperability between the different devices within a home automation system have brought IP-based protocols to the attention in this area. However, a number of hurdles need to be overcome so that the IP connection to home devices could become enabled, the most important being the requests for a large address space and low power consumption. In this paper we present a solution of a home gateway device with the ability to interact with IPv6-enabled home devices over 6LoWPAN, with regard to the increased address space and low power consumption, respectively. Additionally, the gateway supports the traditional IPv4 interfacing over WiFi and Ethernet. UPnP over IPv6 is fully enabled so that all the devices can be easily found by UPnP discovery from any node in the network. Finally, the gateway populates the discovered devices to a cloud server, which in turn enables a variety of web applications for home control to interact to home devices by using asynchronous API calls. 7 MBZC12-07 Context-Aware Platform with User Availability Estimation and Light-Based Announcements 2012 DESCRIPTION As the number of computer-based systems and consumer gadgets is growing, users are becoming increasingly overwhelmed by the requests for attention coming from this variety of devices. In addition, technology has quickened the pace of life and work to the extent that interaction between people has become more frequent. Dealing with both social and device-driven interruptions has become one of the important goals of context-aware systems of today. This paper proposes a context-aware platform that can help mitigate the negative effects of interruptions in human work and living. The platform uses a scalable set of sensors to estimate user availability in the home or office environment. This information is announced to possible interrupters (e.g., household members and software application) by using a web portal, lighting effects, or interfaces to a home automation system or any other interested entity in the local network. This paper presents several contributions to the field. Platform architecture is considered scalable enough to fit to a variety of today’s consumer devices and smart home systems. The experiments were conducted to show the effectiveness of the platform usage within a living room area, as opposed to the traditional office contexts where the availability tends to be easier to determine. The last contribution is related to the novel method and the evaluation of the use of lighting announcements of availability instead of the traditional inefficient busy flags.

It allows us to evaluate a wide range of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) charging scenarios and the corresponding control strategies. In addition, this allows us to explore a variety of communication technologies for a PHEV/PEV charging facility. The charging scheme used here is monitored by Arduino board. Some vehicles are parked during the day at workplace parking garages and can be charged from the solar energy using Photo-Voltaic (PV) cell based charging facilities. The charging with solar energy helps to reduce the emissions from the power grid but increases the cost of charging. Moreover, it offers more flexibility to prepare for the emergence of new technologies (e.g., Vehicle-to-Grid, Vehicle-to- Building, and Smart Charging), which will become a reality in the near future. The simulation results provide a general overview of the impact of the proposed charging scenarios in terms of voltage profiles, peak demand, and charging cost.
