2. - EDM also known as Electronic Dance Movement uses bright
ambitious colours to help the magazine stand out as
shown here, colours like bright red and pink are used. The
colour scheme is usually consistent up to 2-3 colours.
- The main coverline seems to be located in the centre of
the magazine in front of the image using related colours
to the theme e.g. in November’s issue the main coverline
‘Kaytranada’ is coloured red ( the same as masthead).
- Main coverlines are the largest piece of text on the front
cover, they relate to the main image e.g. The image of
Kaytranada with the main coverline here.
- Under each coverline is a sub-coverline which is shown
smaller just under a coverline in a different colour,
sometimes font and size
3. - The masthead of an EDM magazine such as
MixMag spreads boldly across the front cover,
following codes and conventions
- The main image of EDM magazines are of high
quality and once again has a direct address to
customers as shown in this example of MixMag,
anchoring images. It also can cover part of the
title if the brand is well known in which this case,
MixMag is
- There are quite a minimum amount of coverlines
on EDM magazines, for example MixMags has
only around 4 coverlines.
4. - Prices of Music Magazines may vary between
usually around £2 - £5 depending on the
size, popularity of the brand & genre of music
it is related to. For example, a ‘MixMag'
magazine may cost £4.50 however the likes
of a newly release unknown product may be
priced at around £2.50.
- I am going to have to consider this when
coming up with my price.
5. A 'Strapline' is a heading or caption for a music
magazine, usually situated just under the
title/masthead, in this case for MixMag they have
situated the strapline just above the masthead,
‘The worlds biggest dance and clubbing
magazine’.
A 'Pug' is usually placed around the side of a
Magazine cover, it advertises something
massively like an exclusive part of the magazine,
they are usually shown using buzzwords such as
‘plus’ or ‘exclusive’ as shown in the example
‘Puffs’ can be related to the strapline as they are
words or phrases on the front of a magazine
used to boost status, like a slogan.
6. Barcodes are situated in the bottom right
corner of the music magazine.
There are 3 main things around the bar code
area.
The price is normally shown in the bar code
area along with the date published, the issue
number is usually shown however in
MixMag’s case, the website is stated instead
of the issue number, differentiating from
codes and conventions, this is because the
website is a very large part of the business.
