2. Consumerism Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods and services in ever greater amounts. The term "consumerism" was first used in 1915 to refer to "advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers" but in this article the term "consumerism" refers to the sense first used in 1960, "emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of consumer goods“. 3. The problem isn’t consumption – it’s Consumerism. There is a very important difference, though, between consumption and Consumerism. If consumption is the act, Consumerism is the social system which exists when that act becomes defining of a society. And it’s Consumerism that causes the problems. Consumerism takes the act of consumption and turns it into the defining act of our role as social beings.
4. Advertising &Consumerism Consumerism is economically manifested in the chronic purchasing of new goods and services, created by advertising, with little attention to their true need, durability, product origin or the environmental consequences of manufacture and disposal. Consumerism is driven by huge sums spent on advertising designed to create both a desire to follow trends, and the resultant personal self-reward system based on acquisition. Materialism is one of the end results of consumerism. Consumerism interferes with the workings of society by replacing the normal life desire for an adequate supply of life's necessities.
