This document discusses the effects of radiation exposure on the human body. It provides information on different radiation measurement units and outlines health effects that occur at various radiation dosage levels, such as above 100 rems causing nausea and vomiting. It also discusses historical radiation incidents like Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl, noting many initial deaths were due to radiation exposure and survivors often later developed cancers. The document stresses radiation effects may occur decades later and treatment options are limited for high dosage exposures.
2. REM
● REM is old unit which repsent amount of dose equivalent.
●
REM is short for roentgen equivalent in man and mammal
●
Sievert instead of Rem is used in the world, now.
● The total dose of rems determines how much harm a person
suffers.
3. Effects of Radiation
● 25 rems causes some detectable changes in blood, But it
does not immediately effect negative impact on the person.
● Above 100 rems cause change in body. For example, the
symptom is nausea ,vomiting and headache.
● 300 rems or more cause temporary hair loss and damage to
nerve cells and the cells that line the digestive tract.
As aresult, leukemia is taken ill and power of resistance
goes down.
●
800 rems or more causes fatal damage.
● If physical does not changes suddenly, effect by radiation
may occur several tens years later.
4. Hiroshima and Nagasaki
● Many people at Hiroshima and Nagasaki died not directly
from the actual explosion, but from the radiation.
● Wound were found on their bodies. But, they died suddenly.
●
They suffered from cancer, leukosis and cataract.
● Especially, many survivors from atomic bomb got leukosis
within a few months of the nuclear explosions
● In those days, doctors and scientists didn`t understand
not only method of treatment, but also cause of their
death.
5. Three Mile Island
● The Three Mile Island accident occurred in 1979.
●
The cause of the accident is cooling device trouble and
operational error.
●
Radiation which leaked outside was little and quickly
dispersed
●
It is said that nobody exposured to severe radioactivity.
● But, extraordinary event such as fall of infant mortality
is reported.
6. Chernobyl
● The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear accident that
occurred in the world in 1986 .
● The estimated total number of deaths will be 16,000. But,
nobody could not know the total number of deaths.
● Radioactivity of 400 times of an A-bomb dropped in
Hiroshima was released.
●
It is sad that the cause that damage was extended was resp
onse of Soviet Government and lack of safety measure.
7. Medical Treatment
● Effect of living thing including human by radiation is
completely maken clear medically.
● If people are exposed to same amount of radioactivity,
the damage that each person receives may be different.
● There is not effective treatment for person who are
exposed to fatal amount of radioactivity.
● Experts make a study of treatment for exposure to
radioactivity.
●
Treatment for leukosis have source in exposure to
radioactivity is bone marrow transplantation.
8. Matters to be attended to
● If physical does not changes suddenly, effect by radiation
may occur several tens years later.
● After nuclear explosion, many people contracted leukosis
in Hroshima and Nagasaki.
● The Chernobyl disaster great influenced on human and other
living.
●
There is not effective treatment for person who are
exposed to fatal radioactivity.
