Global Commercial Opportunities Derived from Glyphosate Industry
Researched by CCM International Ltd.
I. Introduction
Glyphosate has witnessed stunningly fast development since 2007, boosting the development of
its upstream products including DEA, glycine, IDAN, DMP, etc.
What is the future development trend of glyphosate supply and demand?
How about the current and future competition of the three glyphosate production routes?
What about the supply and demand of main raw materials of glyphosate globally?
Is glyphosate production going to transfer from China and the U.S. to other countries?
Whether Chinese glyphosate production will transfer from East China to West China?
What opportunities will arise from the future development of glyphosate industry?
……
With the above doubts, CCM starts this research on global commercial opportunities derived from
glyphosate industry.

III. Executive summary
Glyphosate, the key active ingredient of Roundup, is one of the most commonly used herbicides in
the market today. With rapidly increasing demand, glyphosate has shared more than 30% of the
global herbicide sales volume. In 2010, global glyphosate sales have reached USDXX billion, with
consumption volume of XX tonnes.
Glyphosate based herbicides are widely used in over 130 countries in the world, but the global
glyphosate technical supply is concentrated in only several countries including China (a country
with easily available raw materials including IDAN and glycine), the U.S. (where Monsanto, the
world glyphosate giant, is headquartered), Argentina (a large glyphosate user, as well as
production base of Monsanto and Atanor), Brazil (a large glyphosate user, and production base of
Monsanto and Nortox), etc.
Glyphosate is mainly consumed in American countries, especially the U.S., Brazil and Argentina,
the top three biotech crop countries. The three countries consume over XX million liters
glyphosate based herbicides (equivalent to XX tonnes glyphosate technical 95%) annually
accounting for over 40% of global total.
The increasing demand of glyphosate is driven by the factors of increasing planting areas of
herbicide-tolerant crops (including herbicide tolerant and herbicide/insecticide-resistant crops
which are mostly glyphosate tolerant), development of biofuel, increasing share of no-tillage
system, intense competition with other herbicides, increasing global harvested area, etc. It is
estimated that global glyphosate demand in the next ten years will keep increasing, but the growth
rate will be much lower than before. The global production of glyphosate technical will grow stably
correspondingly, the three production routes will still coexist and the production by route will not
change much in the coming few years.
China, the largest production base of glyphosate, experienced irrational expansion in 2007 and
2008, and the whole glyphosate industry has been undergoing depressed glyphosate market
since late 2008. Monsanto, the famous gaint of glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup®, also
suffered sharp proft decrease in glyphosate business. Some people remark whether or not there is
an industrial transfer globally, which could help release China's overcapacity and improvement of

7. CCM Data & Primary Intelligence
world's glyphosate price.
This section has carries out two approaches, namely professionals consultancy (questionnaire
and face-to-face interview) and state-of-the-art analysis—step by step exclusion and
comprehensive evaluation, to study the possibility of glyphosate technical's capacity transfer from
China to overseas countries or Southeast China to Western China. Results has shown:
1) It is impossible (or little possibility) to launch new glyphosate technical production line by using
original starting material DEA (or glycine, IDAN) in overseas countries in the future 5~10 years. In
other words, it's inadvisable to invest such glyphosate technical production lines.
2) It is possible to launch glyphosate production line by using PMIDA as the starting raw material in
the future 5~10 years, but the possibility is relatively low.
3) There is low possibility of China's industrial transfer from Southeast China to Western China.
