2. • David Marshall was the first Chief Minister. He represented the
Labor Front and won 10 seats in the 1955 election. He was
born in Singapore
• His party did not win more than 13 seats to form the
government by himself so he had to form a coalition
government with the Alliance Party.
• David Marshall was still under control of the governor as the
Chief Minister.
3. • The Labor Front was what the British expected not to win so
the British did not provide any support to the government of
David Marshall
• The British government treated him as a figurehead which is a
leader with no or little power and don’t respect him a a Chief
Minister.
• David Marshall refuses to be a figurehead. So he demanded the
British government to grant all his full control of the
government’s internal matters which also include areas
controlled by the British government
4. • He also threatened that he will resign being a chief minister if
the British government still don’t meet his demand for
controlling internal matters
• The Hock Lee Bus riot made the British view David Marshall
in a more negative view.
• After the Hock Lee Bus riot, David Marshall was allocated to
London for a Merdeka Talk.
• David Marshall demanded that he want to control internal
matters.
5. • The British don’t think that David Marshall is able to overcome
Communist threat. This made them not following his demand
and resigned as the chief minister
