Rosiglitazone (RSG) has a favorable impact on a wide range of cardiovascular disease risk factors including: insulin resistance 1 hyperglycemia 2 hypertension 3 dyslipidemia 4–6 microalbuminuria 7 reduced vascular reactivity 8 elevated plasminogen activator-1 (PAI-1) 9 elevated C-reactive protein (CRP). 10 By ameliorating these risk factors, rosiglitazone has the potential to decrease atherosclerosis/cardiovascular disease. 1. There was a time when man ate to live. Today it seems as if we would rather live to eat.
The impact of modern technology on our levels of physical activity is immense, resulting in an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Even remote controls and mobile telephones deprive us of physical activity and can lead to the accumulation of almost a kilogram of adipose tissue every year. Furthermore, just one lump of extra sugar per day also leads to the accumulation of almost a kilogram of additional body fat over a year. It is this imbalance between energy intake and physical activity over time that results in body fat accumulation. However, taking a little more activity each day, for example by using the stairs instead of the escalator, would counterbalance this and maintain the balance in body weight.
Diabetes is a very prevalent disease in the United States. An estimated 16 million individuals, or 5.9% of the population, have diabetes. 1 But more than 5 million of these have not yet been diagnosed. 1 Diagnosis of diabetes is often delayed until one of the serious complications of the disease develops, and the patient seeks medical care for it. 1 The majority of these individuals, 90%-95%, has type 2 diabetes. 1 Results from NHANES III indicate that the prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes, is estimated to be 22 million cases in the United States 2 American Diabetes Association.
