Perseverance & Leadership in Tough Times
there is adversity in or around your
environment, think of ways to get
through while minimising the damage
done, so that you will be in a better
position when things start to turn.

the time to teach them, knowing that
they will be much better operators at
the end of it. You have to be proactive
in getting your people through this
period.

For me, longevity was about preparation
and training. The better I prepared and
looked after myself, the better I
performed.

How did you achieve loyalty from
the members of your team?

Is it the same in the mining space?
Interview with: Darren Lockyer,
Company Ambassador & NonExecutive Director, One Key
Resources Pty Limited
Adversity, whether in sport or in
business, is the time when one needs to
focus more on setting a good foundation
for success, believes Darren Lockyer,
Company Ambassador & Non-Executive
Director, One Key Resources Pty
Limited. “Whoever handles adversity
the best will win,” he says.
Named one of Australia’s 100 Greatest
Players (1908 - 2007), Lockyer has set
several records in his Rugby League
career. He retired from the game in
201 1 as c ap tain of his te am ,
Queensland State of Origin, and of the
Australian national team.
Lockyer is attending the marcus evans
Mining Technology and Operations
Summit 2013, in Perth, Australia,
18 - 19 November, as Company
Ambassador of One Key Resources.
You have set several records in your
career. How did you achieve them?
What kept you going in tough
times?
Hard work will always get you out of
hard times. That is when you need to
focus on getting yourself out of that
period, learning from it and setting a
good foundation for success. When

It is very similar to the climate in the
resources sector. Mining is going
through some tough times and it is how
you manage this period, what you put in
place now and how you execute your
game plan that will determine success
when the business cycle turns. You
must pay attention to the details, and
put in time and effort. It is the same in
a game of sport.
What are the qualities of a good
leader, in sport and in business?
Having the respect of your workers,
leading by example and challenging
yourself. Good leaders are always
looking to improve themselves, but also
the people underneath them.
How did you build a successful
team?
Culture is very important, but I think it
is more about identifying the people
that are in your team and working out
the best approach to get the best out of
them. What works for one person may
not work for another. Getting the best
out of individuals is key to having a
successful team.
In mining today, companies are looking
to get efficient teams that work well
together and can get costs down.
The quality of the people is important,
but it is also a challenge as a leader, if
you have people who need to be upskilled or be better at their job. Now is

People are loyal when they know you
care about them. If you show that you
care and make them feel part of the
team, they will not let you down. That
will get commitment back towards you.
