5. Section I - Overview
GUIDE TO USING THE COUNTY MAPS
#1 – The municipality or
operator name is followed by
two sets of numbers, with the
second number in parentheses.
Example: Ohioville – 2 (1). The
first number - “2” in this case -
shows the number of permits
issued. The second number -
“(1)” in this case - indicates how
many wells the permits were
issued for. Usually a single well
requires several permits during
drilling, to allow the driller to
continue to the next stage.
#2 – A purple (or green) dot
indicates where a well pad is
located. Each well pad can have
from one to ten wells on it.
Typically a pad will contain 2-4
wells. Because of the size of the
maps (vastly reduced to show an
entire county), sometimes the
purple dots will be “on top of
each other.” In this example,
Range Resources has 7 wells
with activity in 2011, but only
one purple dot, meaning either
all 7 wells have been drilled on
one pad, or that the pads are so
close as to be indistinguishable
on the map.
#3 – The boundary of each county is indicated with a blue line.
#4 – Major gas pipelines are indicated with red lines and the name of the pipeline somewhere along the line.

WHO OWNS WHO?
Mergers, Acquisitions and Joint Ventures
The following deals have a material impact on either Marcellus or Utica Shale drilling and include both E&P (exploration and production) as
well as midstream (pipelines and processing) deals. This list is not exhaustive, but an attempt is made to include all of the relevant, large deals
in the Appalachian region. The months shown indicate the date of when the deal was first announced, not the final date when the deal was
consummated.
2008
Marcellus drilling heats up with permitting and a large number of wells drilled.
November - StatoilHydro, Europe’s second-largest natural gas supplier, purchased a 32.5 percent interest in Chesapeake Energy’s
Marcellus Shale acreage for $3.37 billion. The deal covered 1.8 million acres of leases in PA, WV, NY and OH (600,000 net acres for
StatoilHydro).
2009
April - Williams Co. and Atlas Pipeline Partners, part of Atlas Energy Inc. form joint venture for the Marcellus Shale. Williams pays $102
million, Atlas provides its Appalachian pipeline gathering system. The new venture is called Laurel Mountain Midstream and Williams
holds a 51 percent ownership interest.
June - Rex Energy sells a 50 percent share of its 44,000 Marcellus acres in PA to Williams Co. The deal called for a joint venture to develop
the acreage between the two companies with Williams investing $33 million.
August - Enerplus buys a 30 percent interest in 552,000 gross acres from Chief Oil & Gas and Tug Hill in PA, WV and MD. Enerplus paid $406
million. Chief continues to operate the properties.
December - Exxon Mobil acquired XTO Energy Inc. in a $31 billion stock deal (which actually turned out to be about $25 billion because
of the stock price), the biggest acquisition for Exxon Mobil since it merged with Mobil Corp. in the 1990s. The deal included 280,000 net acres
in the Marcellus, along with major positions in four other U.S. shale plays.
December - Rex Energy forms a joint venture with Stonehenge Energy Resources called Keystone Midstream Services. Rex owns
40 percent of the new jv and Stonehenge 60 percent.

11. Section VII Drilling Company Snapshots
DRILLING COMPANY SNAPSHOTS
Marcellus/Utica Drilling Activity and Strategies for the 21 Largest Companies
The Marcellus Shale saw dramatic growth and expansion in 2011, primarily in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Also in 2011, “Utica Shale”
entered the public consciousness for the first time, particularly with Chesapeake’s September announcement of striking not only methane and
natural gas liquids, but also oil in eastern Ohio’s Utica Shale region. With all of the new production in Marcellus shale gas flowing into the
national system, inventories exceeded demand and predictably prices went d0wn—way down—to their lowest levels in 10 years.
Drillers have reacted to low prices by reducing their drilling activity in “dry gas” areas of the Marcellus and instead concentrating on the more
profitable “wet gas” areas—those areas with natural gas liquids and in some cases oil. Indeed, one can summarize the almost unanimous refrain
from drilling companies: “More wet gas, less dry gas.” Look for drilling rigs to decrease in the dry gas areas of northeastern Pennsylvania and
some areas of West Virginia, and look for more drilling in the wet gas areas of southwestern Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio (see the Wet
Gas/Dry Gas map on page 13).
Below are snapshots for the top 21 largest drilling companies in the Marcellus and Utica Shale region. The snapshots take a look at activity in
2011, and where possible speculate (based on company press releases and SEC filings) on company strategy for 2012.
Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (www.anadarko.com) – Anadarko is one of the largest independent oil and natural gas exploration and
production companies in the world. The corporate headquarters is located near Houston, TX. They are one of Pennsylvania’s largest producers
of Marcellus shale gas, operating more than 330,000 net acres in Clinton, Centre, Lycoming, Bradford, Sullivan, Tioga and Potter counties. By
the end of the third quarter 2011, Anadarko was producing an average 139 mmcf/d net (521 mmcf/d gross) from 150 producing wells. At the
end of Q3 they had seven operated and seven non-operated rigs in the Marcellus, which is the only dry gas shale play Anadarko was drilling in
the U.S. during 2011. They actively secured new leases in the liquids-rich Utica Shale during 2011. By the end of 3Q, Anadarko had spent $124
million of their capital budget on the Marcellus, on track to spend approximately $160 million on the Marcellus for the entire year. Ahead for
2012 is a trial involving Anadarko and its subsidiary Kerr-McGee, a chemical company. Tronox sued Anadarko and Kerr-McGee in 2009, during
its bankruptcy, to recover environmental liabilities that the chemical maker claimed Anadarko dumped on it through a 2006 spinoff. The
lawsuit, which starts May 15, seeks a $15.5 billion settlement.
Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (www.cabotog.com) – Cabot Oil & Gas, headquartered in Houston, TX, lays claim to some of the highest producing
gas wells in the entire Marcellus Shale play, located in northeastern Pennsylvania. At the end of 2011, Cabot achieved a total aggregated output
of 600 mmcf/d in the Marcellus, more than doubling their output from 2010, making them the second largest gas producer in the play behind
Chesapeake. Cabot’s stock was the S&P 500’s number one performer for 2011, a high honor for any company. At the end of 2011, Cabot had just
over 100 horizontal wells in the Marcellus, and leases for 200,000 net acres. Cabot estimates overall production in the Marcellus Shale will
grow 45-55 percent, and they plan to drill an additional 70-78 new Marcellus wells in 2012. An ongoing controversy involving Cabot is the issue
of methane migration in water wells in the Dimock, PA area. Cabot denies they caused the issue, the state DEP says Cabot did, and 11 affected
families are currently suing Cabot for water contamination. In early 2012, the federal EPA became involved in the ongoing controversy by
initiating its own well water testing program in the Dimock area.
