                                              Sonya Rhie Quintanilla

Victorious Ones is a catalogue of sculptures and paintings of Jainism—one
of India’s three classical religions. With essays by leading scholars of Asian
religions and art, this book illuminates the core ideas of Jainism and its
founding figures, the Jinas, “Conquerors” or Tirthankaras, and the various
                                              spaces they sanctify.
Jainism offers its practitioners liberation from all suffering, preaching a
doctrine of nonviolence. The liberated Jinas are accessible to us through
their teachings and images. They are depicted on painted maps of the Jain
universe and also worshiped at famous pilgrimage sites and in private
domestic shrines. The publication shows several sacred spaces, as well as

pioneer James Waterhouse (1842–1922). From his early career in Central

The art of Sonabai Rajawar has no precedent. She is one of the few self-
taught artists of India, whose story expresses the capacity of human beings

Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing is the result of years of research by the
author. Through stories, insightful documentation and evocative images in
colour, he conveys Sonabai’s life and that of her family and community,
portraying the remarkable productivity that resulted from her isolation,

In Sacred Spaces, Pakistani artist and educator Samina Quraeshi provides
a locally inflected vision of Islam in South Asia that is enriched by art and

This is a unique account of a journey through the author’s childhood

Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was closely connected with the erstwhile royal
house of Travancore. He was one of the first Indian painters to successfully
adopt Western painting techniques and adapt academic realism to the
visual interpretation of Indian mythology. His genre of paintings, which
eventually lead to chromolithographs (oleographs), has maintained a
lasting effect on the Indian sensibility, making him the best-known
classical painter of the modern era.
This book is an account of Ravi Varma’s traditional background and
environment and the manner in which they related to the modernization
of colonial India; his profession as an aristocratic itinerant painter, his
royal patrons, his portraits and the analysis of his mythological and iconic
paintings; his influence on the Indian mindset, the sources used by him
and his controversial status from the late 19th century till today even

attitude. The book is lavishly illustrated with pictures taken from princely
and private collections and museums. These also appear in the book

Catalogue groupings are made on the basis of materials used for the
techniques followed, which is why a South Indian icon may be juxtaposed
with a ritual mask from Himachal in the north. These links transcend
barriers of time and region, forming a network of intriguing similarities.

                                               Temple Potters of Puri
Louise Allison Cort and Purna Chandra Mishra

This book is the first to describe in detail a community of potters working
for the Jagannatha Temple in Puri, and to explore how the role of temple
servant affects the potters’ understanding of their work and of
themselves. As a pilgrimage centre of national importance, supported by
the patronage of successive regional dynasties and by fervent popular
belief, the Jagannatha Temple requires earthenware in great quantities for
the creation and distribution of the sacred food that is an integral feature
                                               of daily ritual and pilgrimage.
Three hundred potters participate as temple servants in maintaining the
temple’s ritual cycle by performing their divinely assigned task. This study,
conducted in 1979–1981, observes the potters’ technical prowess, sustained
by devotion, but also examines the tensions within their relationships to
more powerful temple servants and authorities. The role of the potter as

monograph is figurative and animated, revealing the artist’s connection

                                      contacts with the West.
Roy Choudhury is a modeller in the best modernist tradition, for whom
sculpture is the magical act of turning clay into flesh. Like the work of
many modern artists his figures often seem to exist outside the rationale
of naturalism, but they are seldom dehumanized. Imbued with the
organic, they are lyrically transformed and not expressively transfixed. A
figurative sculptor, who pursues perfection, he is also a portraitist of great

The Adventures of Rama are incidents derived from the Ramayana, the
ancient Hindu tale that was transmitted orally for centuries, captured into
magnificent painted texts by the Mughal ateliers who translated them
into Persian. These incidents have been retold here and lavishly illustrated

she was the only one who was useless. One day, there was a forest fire
and everybody helped put out the fire. The Firefly wanted to help too.
She begged the Sun for some light. When it got dark, she let her light

                                             A S Bhalla

Royal Tombs of India is a first-of-a-kind book on the Islamic royal tombs
in India, providing a rare insight into lesser-known facts about the history
and evolution of tomb architecture. It focuses on the tombs of Tughluq,
Lodi, Qutb Shahi and Mughal dynasties. These tombs are among the most
magnificent pieces of Islamic architecture and grandeur. The Hindu and

dynasties are also described. The author traces history of royal tombs—

                                             Mosques of Cochin
                                             Patricia Tusa Fels

The book documents the surviving vernacular mosques of Cochin—the
jewel of the trading culture of the Malabar Coast of Kerala, and where
historic patterns of an urban trading culture remain visible in the
buildings and layout of the city. Sited in compounds replete with coconut
palms, the mosques offer an oasis of tranquillity in densely populated
neighbourhoods. Large wood-framed pyramidal roofs, deep overhangs,
and fine wooden craftsmanship distinguish the Kerala vernacular. The
mosques of Cochin stand as powerful and visible expressions of the
integration of Islam into the culture of Malabar. However, they are hardly
mentioned in architectural histories or heritage surveys. This book brings
recognition to them as highly valued resources.

                                       LE CORBUSIER
                                       Chandigarh and the Modern City
Edited by Hasan-Uddin Khan, with Julian Beinart and Charles Correa

Chandigarh—the icon of modern city planning and Le Corbusier’s legacy—has
provided a new paradigm for planning in India and an inspiration for a new
generation of Indian architects. After over 55 years of its founding, the city
continues to hold many lessons for planning and architecture. This visually
engaging monograph, through images and essays, looks at the original
ideas and subsequent changes in the city and what they might mean for
current city planning and architectural theory and practice. It revisits
Chandigarh and examines its built and social form, reviewing the changes
in the city, its inhabitants and architecture. A group of experts creatively
speculate through different lenses about the transformation of the city
from its original conception to the pressures of retaining its character. This

  • 6. Crafts & Design NEW Sonabai Another Way of Seeing Stephen P Huyler, with a foreword by Leslie Umberger The art of Sonabai Rajawar has no precedent. She is one of the few self- taught artists of India, whose story expresses the capacity of human beings everywhere to meet their challenges head-on, and to draw from deep within their inner resources the strength and insight to change their lives. Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing is the result of years of research by the author. Through stories, insightful documentation and evocative images in colour, he conveys Sonabai’s life and that of her family and community, portraying the remarkable productivity that resulted from her isolation, and the influence she had on the work of seven other local artists. For a decade and a half, Sonabai was forcibly removed from almost everything she had known growing up. Undaunted, she found ways to transform her oppression into expressions of beauty and joy in living, creating an entirely new artistic expression with no guidance or 128 pages, 178 colour photographs, with a DVD instruction. • 8. Painting NEW Raja Ravi Varma Painter of Colonial India Rupika Chawla Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was closely connected with the erstwhile royal house of Travancore. He was one of the first Indian painters to successfully adopt Western painting techniques and adapt academic realism to the visual interpretation of Indian mythology. His genre of paintings, which eventually lead to chromolithographs (oleographs), has maintained a lasting effect on the Indian sensibility, making him the best-known classical painter of the modern era. This book is an account of Ravi Varma’s traditional background and environment and the manner in which they related to the modernization of colonial India; his profession as an aristocratic itinerant painter, his royal patrons, his portraits and the analysis of his mythological and iconic paintings; his influence on the Indian mindset, the sources used by him and his controversial status from the late 19th century till today even while contemporary painters continue to be inspired by his art and his attitude. The book is lavishly illustrated with pictures taken from princely and private collections and museums. These also appear in the book among the works that have never been seen before, previously undisclosed maps, letters, photographs and other archival material. Rupika Chawla is a conservator of paintings who has restored several Ravi Varma art works and also imparts training in conservation. She has written extensively on contemporary Indian art and maintained a column in the Indian Express from 2001 to 2004. A unique feature of this title is that it comes to the customer with a choice of two splendid dust jackets—one showing the portrait of Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, Maharaja of Mysore on the cover; the other 360 pages, 436 colour illustrations with Damayanti from Ravi Varma's famous painting, The Swan Messenger. 9.5 x 11.5” (241 x 292 mm), hc Customers should indicate their choice of cover at the time of placing ISBN: 978-81-89995-08-9 (Mapin) their order for the book. • 9. Crafts & Design REPRINT National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, New Delhi Jyotindra Jain and Aarti Aggarwala The revised and updated catalogue represents the priceless collection of National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in New Delhi. Folk and tribal icons, narrative paintings, temple jewellery, textiles, everyday objects in wood, terracotta, cane and bamboo—all these are among the 20,000 and more items that establish the timeless tradition of Indian crafts. Catalogue groupings are made on the basis of materials used for the techniques followed, which is why a South Indian icon may be juxtaposed with a ritual mask from Himachal in the north. These links transcend barriers of time and region, forming a network of intriguing similarities. The Museum has made every effort to provide the larger social context within which a particular item takes its place, with an emphasis on continuity and not on antiquity. Both ancient and contemporary works are represented, reflecting the continuing traditions of Indian craftsmanship. 240 pages, 244 colour photographs and a map 8.5 x 11.5" (216 x 292 mm), hc This revised and updated volume serves as a handbook of India’s folk arts ISBN: 978-81-89995-13-3 (Mapin) and crafts. • 10. Crafts & Culture NEW Temple Potters of Puri Louise Allison Cort and Purna Chandra Mishra This book is the first to describe in detail a community of potters working for the Jagannatha Temple in Puri, and to explore how the role of temple servant affects the potters’ understanding of their work and of themselves. As a pilgrimage centre of national importance, supported by the patronage of successive regional dynasties and by fervent popular belief, the Jagannatha Temple requires earthenware in great quantities for the creation and distribution of the sacred food that is an integral feature of daily ritual and pilgrimage. Three hundred potters participate as temple servants in maintaining the temple’s ritual cycle by performing their divinely assigned task. This study, conducted in 1979–1981, observes the potters’ technical prowess, sustained by devotion, but also examines the tensions within their relationships to more powerful temple servants and authorities. The role of the potter as 312 pages, 16 colour and 50 b&w photographs, temple servant is at once glorious, as demonstrated by texts and personal 5 maps and 7 drawings interpretations of the potters’ divinely-appointed service, and pathetic, as 8.5 x 11" (216 x 280 mm), hc shown in the brutality of caste-based hierarchy and cash-based exchange ISBN: 978-81-89995-09-6 (Mapin) penetrating the modern temple’s daily operations. • 11. Art NEW Sensibility Objectified The Sculputres of Sarbari Roy Choudhury R Siva Kumar The sculptural sensibility of Sarbari Roy Choudhury represented in this monograph is figurative and animated, revealing the artist’s connection with the Indian traditions of sculpture, despite the influences from his contacts with the West. Roy Choudhury is a modeller in the best modernist tradition, for whom sculpture is the magical act of turning clay into flesh. Like the work of many modern artists his figures often seem to exist outside the rationale of naturalism, but they are seldom dehumanized. Imbued with the organic, they are lyrically transformed and not expressively transfixed. A figurative sculptor, who pursues perfection, he is also a portraitist of great sensitivity, for whom music is the greatest inspiration. Some of his best works are of classical musicians—Bade Gulam Ali, Ali Akar Khan, Siddeshwari Devi and Kesarbai. 136 pages, 170 colour photographs 8.5 x 11.6" (216 x 296 mm), hc Starting from the 1950s, the monograph traces his work of each decade, ISBN: 978-81-89995-27-0 (Mapin) revealing the artistic journey of one of India’s leading sculptors. The Hindu and Persian Safavid influences in pre-Mughal and Mughal tombs in a central theme of the book, and the historical and architectural contexts of the dynasties are also described. Mosques of Cochin Patricia Tusa Fels The book documents the surviving vernacular mosques of Cochin—the jewel of the trading culture of the Malabar Coast of Kerala, and where historic patterns of an urban trading culture remain visible in the buildings and layout of the city. Sited in compounds replete with coconut palms, the mosques offer an oasis of tranquillity in densely populated neighbourhoods. Large wood-framed pyramidal roofs, deep overhangs, and fine wooden craftsmanship distinguish the Kerala vernacular. The mosques of Cochin stand as powerful and visible expressions of the integration of Islam into the culture of Malabar. However, they are hardly mentioned in architectural histories or heritage surveys. This book brings recognition to them as highly valued resources.
