LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• Born in New Orleans in 1901.
• Poor family.
• Reform school when he was 12.
• Learned to play the cornet.
• He worked selling papers,
unloading boats, and selling coal
from a cart.
• Listened to bandas at clubs like
Funky Butt Hall.

• Joe “King” Oliver was his favorite
musician.
• Gave him his first real cornet.
• He was his mentor.
• In 1917 , played in a Oliver inspired
group.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• In 1919, he left New Orleans for
the first time to Saint Louis.
• Played in Fate Marable´s band.
• Played regular gigs in Kid Ory´s
band.
• In 1921, he returned to New
Orleans and played in some bands
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• In 1919, he took the place of
“King” Oliver in Kid Ory´s band.
• In 1922, he received a telegram
from his mentor, asking him to join
his band in Chicago.
• it was a dream come true for
Louis.
• His amazing playing made a
sensation in other groups.

• In Oliver´s Creole Jazz Band, Louis met
Lillian Hardin.
• In 1924, they were married.
• By the end of 1924, she pressured Louis to leave
his mentor´s band.
• He briefly worked with Ollie Powers´Harmony
Syncopators.

• He moved to New York in 1924
• He played y in some groups and
orchestras.
• He did dozens of recording
sessions (“St. Louis Blues” in 1925).
• In 1925, he came back to Chicago
• He played in Erskine tate´s
vendome orchestra and Carrol
Dickenson´s Orchestra.

• Recorded his first Hot
Five records.
• First time made records
under his own name.
• Never played live,
continued recording until
1928.
• Armstrong continued to play with
Carrol Dickenson´s Orchestra until
1929.
• Louis Armstrong and his Stompers.
• He played in some orchestras.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• Louis moved to Los Angeles in 1930.
• Louis Armstrong and his Sebastian
New Cotton Club Orchestra.
• In 1931, he returned to Chicago,
created a band for touring purposes.
• In june, he returned to New Orleans,
to join King Oliver´s creole Jazz Band.
• Louis and Lil also separated.
• In 1932, he returned to California.

• In 1935, hired Joe Glaser to be his
manager.
• Sunset Café in Chicago in the 1920´s
• Connected to the Al Capone mob
• He hired the Luis Russell Orchestra.
• This was like going home.
• Louis Armstrong Orchestra.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• In 1938, Louis and Lil finally divorced.
• Then, Louis married Alpha his thirth wife.
• Armostrong remairred Lucille.
• The band continued to tour
and realeased records.
• In 1940s the Louis Armstrong
Orchestra look tired.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• In 1947, fired the orchestra and
replaced it.
• The group called Louis Armstrong
Allstars.
• The number of personnel
changes.
• They toured around the world.
• Louis failing health.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• In 1963, Armstrong recorded his
version of “Hello Dolly”.
• Number One single.
• In 1968, recorded “What a
Wonderful World”.
LOUIS “SATCHMO” ARMSTRONG
• Armstrong ´s health began to fail.
• On July 6th 1971 he died at his
home in Queens, New York.
