restaurant special offers and wine farms which offer picnics, which are updated as we
receive them from the restaurants, farms or their PR agencies. We also have a special
list of Valentine‟s events. Click on the underlined, bold words above to access them.
Not all the events are in the Western Cape and we are, occasionally, told about events
in Johannesburg, London, and other cities and towns.
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:
until 15 July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to
Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio
Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest
exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age
retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the
entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of
Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July
2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio
visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to
2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son
Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over
650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg.
Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish
restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing
apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to
South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his
studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp
during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which
confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope,
and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning,
originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum
and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children
under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group
tours by prior arrangement.

MAY
Friday, 25th May Ernst Gouws & Co. Family wines paired dinner at the Vineyard
Hotel & Spa. Owner and wine maker Ernst Gouws will showcase his wines at a four-
course wine-paired dinner. Ernst and his wife Gwenda are the soul and drive behind the
family-owned wine company, with four generations of the Gouws family intrinsically
linked to the fine art of winemaking. Gouws studied winemaking at the Weinsberg Wine
School in Germany during the 1970's. During the early 1980's he worked in the
Champagne and Bordeaux regions in France, and then spent 15 years actively involved
with the development of a number of private wine estates in the Cape Winelands,
including Saxenburg, Rhebokskloof and Hoopenburg. In 2004 he fulfilled his lifelong
dream by going solo and launching the family flagship label, Ernst Gouws & Co. To avoid
disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they
are extremely popular with both local and resident guests. Diners can enjoy live light
entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to
the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent
with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one. Each wine-
paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. Ahead of
each event we conduct a tasting where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and
select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get
together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a
menu specifically paired to the wines in question. For those guests who‟d like to make a
night of it, the Vineyard Hotel & Spa is offering a special rate which includes the four-
course wine paired dinner, accommodation and breakfast the following morning. Single
rooms are available at R900 and double rooms at R1500 per room per night. Reservations
are essential and can be made by contacting The Square on 021 657 4500 or e-mail

Friday, 8th June Creation Wines paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa. Roy
Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-paired dinner
events each month, where winemakers from farms Creation will have the opportunity to
present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in
advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident

five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting
where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well
as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the

Thursday, 21st June. 18h30 for 19h00. Join white-wine maker Gunther Kellerman for a
„Rich Man Poor Man‟ wine pairing at The Eatery at Durbanville Hills. Surprise your
senses by matching Durbanville Hills‟ wines with food that speak of both simplicity and
sophistication. Food and wine pairings generally focus on the sumptuous, but when a
tight budget calls for something less extravagant, combining it with a glass of your
favourite wine can make it a lot more palatable. With Gunther‟ insights, discover the
secrets of superior wine pairing when matching the wines of Durbanville Hills with
convenience foods such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and good old pepper steak
pie. You will try the Sauvignon Blanc paired with both sushi and salted chips, and
compare the taste of the Chardonnay when teamed up with both creamy Parmesan pasta
and buttered popcorn. After the wine and food pairing, dinner follows in The Eatery at
Durbanville Hills with a choice of either its famous chicken pie or an ostrich burger.
Coffee or tea and biscotti will be served afterwards. Durbanville Hills‟ wines will be on
sale during the evening. Cost: R175 per person (includes welcome drink and wine pairing
followed by dinner, coffee or tea and biscotti. There is also a gift bag to take home).
Space is very limited and booking is essential. Please contact Simone Brown on 021 558

Friday, 21st September. Boutique wine makers paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel &
Spa. Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard explains, “We will host two wine-
paired dinner events each month, where winemakers will have the opportunity to
present their wines. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in
advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident
guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening,
and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are
looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the
experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or
five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting
where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well
as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the
wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in
question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then
experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us
to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we
believe our guests will experience with every paired event.” The cost of the dinners is
R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Davies and his team have
also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests
attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double

Main Ingredient's Events Calendar 2012

  • 1. Here is our list of current and upcoming wine and food-related events for 2012. The list may be updated at any time, so watch this space…. (Click on the bold Green highlights to access websites for more information). We have separate lists of restaurant special offers and wine farms which offer picnics, which are updated as we receive them from the restaurants, farms or their PR agencies. We also have a special list of Valentine‟s events. Click on the underlined, bold words above to access them. Not all the events are in the Western Cape and we are, occasionally, told about events in Johannesburg, London, and other cities and towns. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: until 15 July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July 2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to 2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over 650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg. Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope, and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning, originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group tours by prior arrangement. LIVE MUSIC AT HARVEST Kick start your weekend with a chilled glass of wine or bubbly at Harvest at Laborie Wine Farm in Paarl whilst enjoying the live music on offer every Friday, between 5pm and 8pm. Owner and wine maker Ernst Gouws will showcase his wines at a four- course wine-paired dinner. Ernst and his wife Gwenda are the soul and drive behind the family-owned wine company, with four generations of the Gouws family intrinsically linked to the fine art of winemaking. Gouws studied winemaking at the Weinsberg Wine School in Germany during the 1970's. During the early 1980's he worked in the Champagne and Bordeaux regions in France, and then spent 15 years actively involved with the development of a number of private wine estates in the Cape Winelands, including Saxenburg, Rhebokskloof and Hoopenburg. In 2004 he fulfilled his lifelong dream by going solo and launching the family flagship label, Ernst Gouws & Co. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they
  • 2. are extremely popular with both local and resident guests. Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one. Each wine- paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square‟s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It‟s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.” The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Join white-wine maker Gunther Kellerman for a „Rich Man Poor Man‟ wine pairing at The Eatery at Durbanville Hills. Surprise your senses by matching Durbanville Hills‟ wines with food that speak of both simplicity and sophistication. Food and wine pairings generally focus on the sumptuous, but when a tight budget calls for something less extravagant, combining it with a glass of your favourite wine can make it a lot more palatable. With Gunther‟ insights, discover the secrets of superior wine pairing when matching the wines of Durbanville Hills with convenience foods such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and good old pepper steak pie. You will try the Sauvignon Blanc paired with both sushi and salted chips, and compare the taste of the Chardonnay when teamed up with both creamy Parmesan pasta and buttered popcorn. After the wine and food pairing, dinner follows in The Eatery at Durbanville Hills with a choice of either its famous chicken pie or an ostrich burger. Coffee or tea and biscotti will be served afterwards. Durbanville Hills‟ wines will be on sale during the evening. Cost: R175 per person (includes welcome drink and wine pairing followed by dinner, coffee or tea and biscotti. There is also a gift bag to take home). Space is very limited and booking is essential. Please contact Simone Brown on 021 558 1300 or e-mail sibrown@durbanvillehills.co.za. Friday, 22nd June Paul Cluver & Iona Vineyards (Elgin Valley) paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa.
