BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE

China’s accelerated pace of urbanization ,transformation
from an agricultural society to a urban one
  ﹥ Urbanization rate from 17.9%(1978)to 51.3%(2011)
Challenge of “incomplete urbanization”
  ﹥230million migrant workers(2010), another 200million
migrant workers(2020);
  ﹥ migrant workers and their families, are frequently
excluded from city life and thus hardly get integrated into
urban society.
BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE

Profound social exclusion results in serious
social consequences
 ﹥   undermine human capital accumulation;

 ﹥  accelerate social polarization and the
emergence of urban slums;
 ﹥   trigger social conflicts, ultimately jeopardizing
social stability and development.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

 The objective of program is to reduce the digital
 gap, to strengthen the employability of the
 migrant people, and promote social harmonious
 development.
PROGRAM ISSUES
Chuanfang Community in Xishan District ,the largest
urban village in Kunming, Yunnan Province
  1.8 square kilometers with 3836 local villagers, while its
2556 rental houses accommodate more than 80 thousand
migrant people,30% of them is young people under 25
years
PROGRAM ISSUES
 young migrant people can not find job due to the low
education and lacking of necessary professional skills

 Increasing crime rate among young generation of
urban immigrations
PROGRAM CONTENTS
Jointly established by Microsoft China and CDRF, equipped
with training networks and computers , providing:
  computer skills( Typing software, Office, Photoshop CAD)
  the knowledge that is helpful for migrant workers to integrate
into the main stream of the society, such as law, labor protection,
health care, communication, financial literacy ;
 the most advanced games for young children to feel the marvelous
of computer technology.

PROGRAM GOAL

 For 2 years ,1800 young migrant people will be
 trained, 6800 people will be benefited from the
 program
EFFECTIVENESS

Trainees :
 acquired new knowledge and skills benefit for their
present job or looking for new jobs.
 gained respect from the trainers and volunteers, built
up self-esteem and self-confidence.
 more concerned and involved in the community affairs.
SOCIAL IMPACT

 Promoting employment by improving
 laborer’s vocational skills
 Promoting IT, reducing modern illiteracy
 Promoting Social Inclusion of Migrant
 Workers
CONCLUSIONS

 The project fits in with the current urbanization
 situation and trend of China’s development and is in
 line with the enterprise’s corporate social
 responsibility objectives.
 The project makes use of the computer technology
 advantage of Microsoft.
 The effectiveness and impact of training are evident.
 Free of Charge is important
 Operating fund is one key element to the
 sustainability of the program.
 The evaluation or monitoring at early stage of
 program is positive for the improvement of the
 project implementation.

  • 3. BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE China’s accelerated pace of urbanization ,transformation from an agricultural society to a urban one ﹥ Urbanization rate from 17.9%(1978)to 51.3%(2011) Challenge of “incomplete urbanization” ﹥230million migrant workers(2010), another 200million migrant workers(2020); ﹥ migrant workers and their families, are frequently excluded from city life and thus hardly get integrated into urban society.
  • 4. BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE Profound social exclusion results in serious social consequences ﹥ undermine human capital accumulation; ﹥ accelerate social polarization and the emergence of urban slums; ﹥ trigger social conflicts, ultimately jeopardizing social stability and development.
  • 5. PROGRAM OBJECTIVE The objective of program is to reduce the digital gap, to strengthen the employability of the migrant people, and promote social harmonious development.
  • 6. PROGRAM ISSUES Chuanfang Community in Xishan District ,the largest urban village in Kunming, Yunnan Province 1.8 square kilometers with 3836 local villagers, while its 2556 rental houses accommodate more than 80 thousand migrant people,30% of them is young people under 25 years
  • 7. PROGRAM ISSUES young migrant people can not find job due to the low education and lacking of necessary professional skills Increasing crime rate among young generation of urban immigrations
  • 8. PROGRAM CONTENTS Jointly established by Microsoft China and CDRF, equipped with training networks and computers , providing: computer skills( Typing software, Office, Photoshop CAD) the knowledge that is helpful for migrant workers to integrate into the main stream of the society, such as law, labor protection, health care, communication, financial literacy ; the most advanced games for young children to feel the marvelous of computer technology.
  • 9. PROGRAM STRUCTURE Microsoft Media CDRF Local Public Migrant Young Government people Community
  • 10. PROGRAM GOAL For 2 years ,1800 young migrant people will be trained, 6800 people will be benefited from the program
  • 11. EFFECTIVENESS Trainees : acquired new knowledge and skills benefit for their present job or looking for new jobs. gained respect from the trainers and volunteers, built up self-esteem and self-confidence. more concerned and involved in the community affairs.
  • 12. SOCIAL IMPACT Promoting employment by improving laborer’s vocational skills Promoting IT, reducing modern illiteracy Promoting Social Inclusion of Migrant Workers
  • 13. CONCLUSIONS The project fits in with the current urbanization situation and trend of China’s development and is in line with the enterprise’s corporate social responsibility objectives. The project makes use of the computer technology advantage of Microsoft. The effectiveness and impact of training are evident. Free of Charge is important Operating fund is one key element to the sustainability of the program. The evaluation or monitoring at early stage of program is positive for the improvement of the project implementation.
