3. Social Media Marketing for Small
to Medium Businesses
1. Our business idea is to promote small and medium
businesses on social networking sites like facebook,
Google+, Pinterest and twitter, who do not have any or
much online presence.
2. We approach the business and understand their
business model and create an online marketing
campaign for them that suits their business and helps
them to attract more customers.
4. How do we do it?
1. Identify the right business who do not have a significant
online presence. Understand who their target customers
are.
2. Identify those businesses whose customers are heavy
users of social media sites such as the local doctors,
dentists, clinics, play schools, colleges, restaurants, car/2
wheeler dealers, service centers, and similar businesses.
3. Approach the business owner or the decision maker of
the business and explain them the benefits of advertising
on facebook, Google+, Pinterest and twitter.
4. Talk in terms of numbers and show them the stats and
figures.
5. How do we do it? contd...
1. Ask them what's their monthly marketing budget.
2. What are the channels they are presently using to
market their business.
3. What is the return on investment made on their existing
advertising and marketing spend
4. Compare these numbers with that of the numbers and
returns from social media marketing and explain them
the benefits of advertising on social networking sites.
6. What did we do till now?
1. We interviewed about 100 business owners within a
radius of 10 kms from our place.
2. The response was quite mixed as many of the business
owners have ignored the idea of SMM saying they are
already present on justdial.com and yellowpages.com
which they think is enough for them.
3. Other business owners who are aware of facebook do
not want to try it as they consider it to be an expensive
medium to advertise mainly so because of the
depreciating rupee vis-a-vis the US Dollar.
4. They are happy with the traditional way of advertising
which is distributing pamphlets through newspapers
which is the most popular way of approaching the local
target audience.
7. What did we learn?
We learnt that:
1. Every business owner wants to know what is the return
on investment for advertising on facebook and other
social media websites. Which is quite obvious.
2. Business owners do not want to try a new media to
attract the customers
3. Very few business owners know about Google+ and
twitter and nobody ever heard about Pinterest
4. Creating an awareness by educating the business
owner is the most important thing to get clients in the
business of Social Media Marketing in India.
8. How did we get their business?
To win their business we did the following:
1. Offered free campaign for the first two weeks or till their
advertising budget exhausted on facebook. All they had
to pay is only for the advertising cost on facebook
2. Bundled our offer with other freebies like a flex banner
ad which they can display in their store to follow their
business on facebook.
3. Unlimited photos and video uploads on facebook for the
first one month
4. Assisted few business owners in their business by hiring
the personnel for few positions using our network on
linkedin and yourstory.in
9. Conclusion
1. Unlike in the US, SMM has still not caught up in a big
way with the SMB owners
2. This is still a virgin market and there is a huge potential
to be tapped in by educating the business owner
3. However the SMM business will reach its saturation
point very soon as everyone is going to get into this
business. Because it doesn't require much investment in
terms of money.
4. In the long run only those will survive who can
understand their client's pains and provide the right
solution
5. We are still in the process of convincing our clients to
get them signed for a period contract after the
completion of the free period
