Issues Independent Studios Major Studios
1) How
easily/widely can
films be
distributed?
It is more difficult to distribute as independent studios tend to
have a lower budget and distributing films are at a high price,
thought it depends on how you distribute the film. Lower
costing distribution methods, tend not to be seen by as many
people.
It is easier to distribute because they tend to own other media
companies, like a distribution company. Major studios also
tend to have a larger budget. Due to being an already popular
studio, they would have a specific audience that they can easily
target.
2) How profitable
are the releases for
the company?
Independent studios have a lower profit due to the fact they
tend to produce niche, art films which are not as popular to a
wide audience.
Major studios have a higher profit due to well know identities
within the film industry, and they tend to produce bigger,
more popular films.
3) How much
creative control do
the makers of the
films have over the
films the produce?
Mostly, they have low control due to the fact they rely on
others for money, who could want a say in the creative aspects
of the film. Also, due to the lower budget, they do not have the
money major studios would for special effects.
However, they do not have to rely on other producers, gaining
them some control.
Major studios usually have a higher control over creative
aspects of the movie. They have enough money to buy the
cast and crew they want as well as having enough money for
special effects. They also have a higher budget, and a higher
reputation, so they can build the sets they want, or easily
acquire the permission to film in an natural location.
However, if they are basing the movie on another media text,
like a book or a graphic novel, they would have limited
control.
4) How easy is it
for them to get
funding?
As they are not as well known, and do not have much profit
from previous movies; it is harder for independent studios to
get funding. Due to this they may have to get several external
sources to acquire the money they need and even then, it will
not be as much as major studios.
It is much easier for major studios to get funding as they have
a much higher income from previous production. Major
studios also have other media companies that could provide
funding for them. Even if they did have to loan the money,
they could do so easily, due to their reputation.
