This document provides an overview of a seminar on designing collaborative online learning activities. The seminar is presented over multiple parts that introduce concepts like learning design, cooperative learning, and tools to support the process. Participants work in groups to conceptualize a teaching scenario by determining learning objectives, obstacles, content, and assessments. They storyboard and map their course design using the Integrated Learning Design Environment (ILDE) tool to write collaborative scripts. The seminar concludes with implementing designs in Moodle and discussing how the strategies could be applied in classrooms. Participants provide feedback through a seminar assessment questionnaire.
1. Collaborative Design of Teaching Scenarios
A practical seminar on investigating tools and techniques for
the design of successful online collaborative learning
activities
The program METIS funded with support from the European Commission. This
publication only of the author, and the Commission is not responsible for any use of the

2. Introduction to the METIS project
& the objectives of the seminar
• What is the METIS project and where is it aiming ?
• What does this tutorial offer?
• The activities that will be carried out
• Tools that will support our work
• Our knowledge as trainers

3. Introduction to Learning Design
"Learning Design is the act of devising new practices,
plans of activity, resources and tools that aim at achieving
particular educational goals in a given situation."
(METIS project, 2012)
4. Introduction to Cooperative Learning
In contrast to individual learning, collaborative learning
enables learners to benefit from each other sources and
skills (exchanging information, evaluating their ideas,
watching each other's work, etc.)

6. Form Groups
Make groups of three to five people who have common
interests in teaching (Instructors can suggest a method).
Choose the name of your team.
This will help us to collect the work of each group in order
to evaluate the effectiveness of the seminar and to
improve future seminars.
7. How to ruin a course?
1) Each one of you should write two or three ways that a
course can be ruined-things that can make a class to fail.
2) Share your ideas with other team members.Create a list
of the composition of your ideas for your group.
3) What are the key points?
9. Determination of the course content
and learning objectives
Instructors will guide you to a brainstorming. This activity
will create ideas for the content of the course and learning
objectives.
10. Characteristics of the learners
Instructors will make an introduction to the characteristics
of the learners. They will present them separately into
cognitive, psychosocial and demographic characteristics.
Finally they will present the characteristics of ILDE.
11. Obstacles and Challenges
Taking into account the learning objectives and the
characteristics of the learners:
1) Think: Think of three obstacles or challenges that could
destroy collaborative learning and write them on post-
its (5mins).
2) Pair: As a group, categorize the post-its using an A1
sheet. Take a photo of the sheet and upload the photo
on ILDE (10 minutes).
3) Share: One person from each team will present to the
class the list of obstacles & challenges that his/her
team have created (10 minutes).
12. PartThree
Writing the Course Content
Instructors will make an introduction in the writing of
the course’s content.
13. Educational Strategies
of Collaborative Learning
1) Each person learn about a particular pedagogical
strategy of Collaborative Learning (each team member
is studying a different strategy).
2) Each member of the team describes the strategy to
the rest of the team – they conclude to a common view
on the strategy.
3) Discuss each strategy separately in the class.
14. Development of a Course Map
As a group, use ILDE to create
a Course Map about the
collaborative teaching scenario
that you will develop. You must
complete the following fields:
Course Title, Course / module
summary, Key words,
Guidance & support, Content &
experience, Reflection &
demonstration, Communication
and collaboration
15. Presentation Course Map (1)
The representation of a course in Course Map enables you
to form an opinion on this course with a "glimpse“ in four
levels. It contains a brief summary of its activities.
16. Presentation Course Map (2)
Guidance & Support
• How the pupils are supported?
• Is there a guided learning path?
• What are the supporting sources ?
• What are the human resources?
Content & Experience
• How do you deliver this course?
• What type of activities do you use?
Reflection & demonstration
• Course type (traditional or online)
• Assessment Method?
Communication & collaboration
• Methods of communication and collaboration between learners
• Methods of communication and collaboration between teacher and learners

Learner's Work
Use the following post-its
(JISC-OULDI), to create a
storyboard of the collaborative
teaching scenario that you will
develop. Then take a photo of
the poster and upload it on
ILDE.
18. Writing Teaching collaboration scripts
using I.C.T
Instructors will make an introduction about writing
the content of the course using the Web Collage
tool which is integrated in ILDE.
Part4
19. Writing with the
Web Collage tool
Use the Web Collage tool from ILDE to start writing your
lesson.
20. Demonstration of the implementation with the
Moodle virtual learning environment
The instructors will present the automated application
of the learning designs from the Web Collage to
Moodle using Glue! –PS.
21. Discuss about the implementation
of the teaching scenarios in class
Instructors and students will discuss how the learning
designs which have been developed can be used in the
classroom.
They will present the homework. (The completion of the
homework is required for the certification of the seminar).
23. Assessment Questionnaire
We want to know your opinion about the seminar and the
material presented (eg ILDE, the activities that you have
developed, etc.) - in this way we can improve future
seminars in order to make them easier to be applied in
daily practice.
Please fill in the questionnaire of the seminar. You will not
need more than 20 minutes.
The workshop today is about designing a learning design workshop on collaborative learning for your learners. You we will participate in a sequence of activities in which you will bring your expertise about the context in which you teach, and we will support you as we introduce you to some tools and methods which will help you design

Facilitators present overview of activity, and introduce the course map and learning outcomes view (10 minutes).
Describe your vision for an activity to occur in a learning design workshop on collaborative learning. This is a first draft, and it may be modified during the workshop. Focus on describing the effects the workshop activity being designed is intended to have on the learners.
Use a Learning Outcomes View and a Course Map to help structure your discussions and describe your vision. You can use the Learning Outcomes View to describe the activity you will implement and a Course Map to describe the workshop it will fit into (i.e. you can use the Course Map to describe a version of the METIS workshop structure in D3.2 for KEK or Agora).

The facilitators conclude by describing how participants can find out more about learning design in general and the ILDE in particular (5 minutes).
ITD introduce the evaluation questionnaire and participants complete it (25 minutes)
