2. Early books Prior to the invention of the printing press, books were not easy to come by. Only the very rich could read because they were the only ones that could afford books. Why?

8. Early books Gutenberg printed many bibles. Within 10 years, presses were set up all across Europe. Within 50 years, approximately 35,000 editions were printed (McLain).

9. Early books - Americas The first operable printing press was set up in the New World circa 1533; the first printed book can be traced to missionaries in Mexico. A printing press was set up in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1638 (Walden Print Co.).

13. The Significance Knowledge is power. Knowledge is found in the printed word. One of the first things a new government wants to control is books. Keep the masses in the dark; keep them uneducated.
