APPLIED DRAMA
FOR THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS
A
FOREIGN LANGUAGE

What is Applied Drama?
Drama comes from a Greek word meaning
“action”, which is derived from the verb
meaning “to do” or “to act”.
Applied Drama , also known as Applied
Theatre , is an umbrella term for the use of

drama practice in a specific social context or
environment.
Drama is the only discipline that
involves
Mental
concentration

Physical Movement

Vocal Action
Drama techniques or strategies
Tableaux
Participants make still images with their
bodies to represent a scene.
Choral Speaking
It involves students reading aloud by
assigning parts to each group member.
Role playing
It allows students to play a character in a
real or imaginary situation.
Improvisation
It is the practice of making and creating in
the moment and in response to the stimulus
of one’s immediate environment.
Drama games
These activities and exercises are
often used to introduce students
to drama..
Benefits of Applied Drama


Natural communication vs. conscious learning.



The assimilation of pronunciation and prosodic features.



The fully contextualized acquisition of new vocabulary
and structures.



An improved sense of confidence of the student.
