3. The Music Genre & How We Can Tell
First of all, by my initiative and logical way of thinking; I can
tell that the genre of this magazine is indeed electro, dance
and styles associated with it. Largely due to the fact that the
title is indeed ‘elektro’ and its skyline gives us a clue on what
genre it is. Otherwise, the DJ (Tiesto) is portrayed on the
cover with headphones, a large deck and throwing his hands
in the air. This method of music and lifestyle is normally
associated with electronic dance music and disc jockeys. Thus
the large list of names on the side of the cover are all names
that do not suggest they belong to rock bands or etcetera.
The blue lighting is also more of an electric theme plus it has
shapes in the back that seem to be stage lights also making it
more definite.
4. Target Audience & How We Know
• The audience are clearly fans of the magazine
as well as the genre it supports and
advertises. This is shown by the DJ once again
as well as the long list of artists that are
displayed upon the left of the cover. Also, the
‘the real definition of a rock star’ may be a
mockery of rock suggesting that real music is
this genre. This may also attract fans too along
with a famous artist on the front of the cover.
5. Image
• The main image is indeed of the artist and relates to
the music genre by having the symbolisations of
electronic music: headphones, decks, rave gestures and
flashing lights. The image has no actual borders but the
DJ’s movements seem to stay within its freedom thus
the actual image bleeds out as seen with the
background lights going off the cover. Ideally, the mise
en scene is pretty simple and suggests that this genre is
not about glamour or fashion but more about the
music and having a good time. The headphones also
represent the intensity and sort of symbolise his role
alongside the deck that becomes his partner.
