6. COACHING STAFF
Jim Mule
Jim Mule is an eleven-year veteran of the MLL with experience as both a
player and a coach. This will be his seventh season as head coach of the Long
Island Lizards, with a 36-43 record and playoff appearances in 2005, 2009
and 2010. In 2010, he won the MLL Coach of the Year Award.
Following the 1999 World Cup of Lacrosse, in which the U.S. team, with Mule
as a member, swept Canada 2-0, Mule was drafted in the second round (12th
overall) in the 2001 MLL Inaugural Draft. Mule served as the starting goalie for the Barrage for two seasons
before retiring and applying his lacrosse acumen as an assistant coach under Sal LoCascio for the former
Bridgeport Barrage.
After his last season with the Barrage, in which they won the MLL Championship, Mule joined the Lizards as
head coach for the 2005 season.
A Long Island Native from East Meadow, Mule currently lives in Dix Hill, NY with his wife, Jamie, and their
three children.
John Espey
With 27 years of experience coaching NCAA lacrosse, John Espey is
someone the Lizards feel lucky to have. Over his 17 years coaching at Stony
Brook, Espey lifted the program from Division III to Division I, demonstrating his
ability to nurture not just individual players, but entire programs.
Becoming the SBU head coach in 1988, Espey tallied six winning seasons. In
2002, during SBU’s first year as an America East member, the SBU Seawolves
posted a 10-7 record and won their conference tournament championship,
earning the first ever NCAA Tournament berth for their program.
Espey received his master’s degree in health and physical education from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill in 1976, while serving as a graduate assistant coach. He is currently a tenured associate
professor at Stony Brook and also serves on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Ranking
Committee.
Espey currently resides in Commack with his wife Linda and their three children: Michelle, Kimberly and
John.
