8. Attendance Show up. Your grade will be better if you do. You get (6XP) whenever you come to class. You will know what’s going on in class and will know the course material. Come. To. Class. Be. On. Time.

10. Readings & Class Meetings The success of this class depends on YOU. Come to class prepared. Do the readings. They are short in most cases. Sometimes you don’t even have to read!! Podcasts and videos take the place of readings some days. There will be reading comprehension exercises in class that you will get points for doing. You will not know ahead of time when they will happen. Course schedule
11. Assignments You have options (see syllabus) You’ll do two Assignments this semester. Each is worth 150XP
12. Exams You will also have 2 exams this semester 1 Midterm and 1 Final. They are each worth 200
13. Grading Attendance 6 XP per meeting (150 max XP) Reading Comprehension Exercises: 100 XP Participation: 50XP Assignment 1: 150 XP Midterm Exam: 200 Assignment 2: 150 XP Final Exam: 200 Total XP possible = 1,000

22. The Media Life Perspective We live IN media not with it. There is no life outside of media. There is no way to make sense of yourself outside of media.
23. Don’t be Technomyopic On one side: Technology makes our lives better. On the other side: Technology makes us dumber and the world a horrible place.

Media images, stories and songs supersaturate households, workplaces, elevators, shopping malls bars, airports and all other in-between spaces of today’s world. Most of the content is created by you and me in our endless text messages, emails, chats and phone calls as well as through our online social networks. The majority of the world owns a cell phone. Telecom networks span almost every inch of the globe and sales figures for any and all kinds of media device are growing steadily around the world. Also work, home and play have converged through a continuous exposure to media. This helps accelerate our engagement with media in today’s world.
This is a frame of mind. You should make up your own mind. That’s what college is about. However, go with me for a while and let’s see where it takes us. Our lives are made up of conversation and communication.This conversation is hackable and remixable by anyone because of the technological world we live in today. That makes today’s world dynamic, unpredictable and permanently under construction.
Media don’t make things better or worse. They are us. Sometimes we make things better or worse for other people. That’s how we should view media’s impact on the world too. Try not to be an optimist or a pessimist. Media’s role in our lives is complex. It is not as simple as being a “good thing” or a “bad thing.”Media also do not bring about extraordinary changes in the world. Facbook, Myspace, YouTube are remixes. They are based on something else. We should study what these things say about us.
We have been living life in media for a long time, but now it is accelerating.
