18. HOW IS INFO ORGANISED…
Databases by Platform
multiple databases searched
at a time
widest search of all available
info
good for starting searches
when one has little info
about topic or wants to find
out more about topic
limited to databases it
subscribes to
disciplines: multi & single
Databases A-Z
one database searched at a
time
multiple journals searched
limited to journals the
database subscribes to
disciplines: mostly single,
but some multi
E-Journal Portal
searches articles within
set/chosen journals
disciplines: multi & single
narrow search of all
available data
good for searches when one
knows a lot about topic &
journal
ALEPH (online Library Catalogue)
& PRIMO
searches library print/physical holdings with links to digital content
examples: books, serials/journals, videos, maps, etc.

22. 1. Write down your topic in its simplest form
Then break it up into CONCEPTS.
The impact of climate change on natural resources & sustainable
development
Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3
BOOLEAN SEARCHING
22
23. 2. Think of key words that describe each of your concepts
CONCEPT 1
Environmental
change
Global warming
CONCEPT 2
Water
ocean
sea
river
CONCEPT 3
Sustainable
development

development

23
24. 3. Construct your search strategy
Boolean logic provides the language you use to
structure your keyword search … the search engine
needs to know how your search terms relate to each
other
In Boolean searching, you make use of the
three Boolean operators:
AND OR NOT
24
25. Use AND to combine different concepts:
“Climate change AND Water “
Climate
change
Water
• Using ‘AND’ narrows your search.
• It retrieves items containing all of the search terms or keywords that you specify.
• The blue shaded area represents the search results.
25
26. Use OR to enter keywords for the same (single) concept:
“Water OR Sea OR rivers OR Ocean”
WATER
RIVERS
SEA
OCEAN
• Using ‘OR’ broadens your search.
• It retrieves items containing any one of the search terms or keywords that you specify.
• The shaded area represents the search results.
26
27. Use NOT to get rid of unwanted results:
“water NOT rivers”
Water Rivers
27
29. ONE SEARCH BOX: Use brackets to separate your concepts
STRUCTURED SCREEN:
Water OR ocean OR sea OR rivers
Sustainable Development
(Environmental Change OR climate change OR global warming) AND (water
OR ocean OR sea OR rivers) AND Sustainable Development
4. Type your search strategy
Environmental Change OR climate change OR global warming
29
30. SOME PRACTICAL SEARCH TIPS
Good practice to keep track of the following:
what you search for
i.e. search words, tearms, phrases
where you search
i.e. Library catalogue, Journals, Databases, etc.
search results
i.e. number & type resources articles, journals,
databases, etc. 30

71. REFERENCING & PLAGIARISM
What is plagiarism?
Whenever you do written work you must differentiate
between your own ideas and those, which you did not
think of yourself, but which you have read elsewhere
– in particular you must distinguish what you have
written from what you are quoting.
