OneDrive for Business Support Model Proposal
Executive Summary:
OneDrive for Business is a component part of SharePoint Online, and is a completely different
offering than Microsoft’s consumer offering - OneDrive. Any implementation of OneDrive for
Business requires licensing customers for SharePoint Online.
Currently, Microsoft provisions each customer with 25 GBs of OneDrive for Business and My
Site space. However, communications late last month stated that Microsoft will be increasing
OneDrive for Business storage from 25GB to 1TB per customer. According to their
communications, these changes will start rolling out to customers over the next few months.1
The initial OneDrive for Business quota for each customer is counted separately from our
production environment’s current allocation of approximately 71.54 TB.2
This 71.54 TB of
storage space can be used for the creation of Site Collections and Team Sites. However, it can
also be allocated to increase a customer’s OneDrive for Business storage space as well, if
warranted. However, any additional storage space allocated to customer’s OneDrive for
Business space is counted against our 71.54 TB quota.3
UGA can house up to 10,000 site collections (other than personal sites). Each site collection can
contain up to 2,000 sub-sites per site collection. Each site collection can store up to 1 TB of
information.4
In any SharePoint library, customers can sync files of up to 2 gigabytes (GB). This includes One
Drive for Business.5
File versioning is now turned on by default for newly created OneDrive for
Business libraries, and it will automatically save the last ten versions of a document. Versioning
is used to track the history of a version, restore a previous version or view a previous version6
Deleted files go to the Recycle Bin which has a default retention period of 90 days Recycle Bin
content counts against the customer’s OneDrive for Business 25 GB quota.
OneDrive for Business has a more restrictive list of what characters can be used in a file or folder
name that used by consumer version of OneDrive.7
File names can have up to 128 characters
Folder names can have up to 250 characters
Folder name/file name combinations can have up to 250 characters
The following characters in file names aren't supported when you sync OneDrive for
Business with SharePoint Online
o / : * ? " < > | # %
o Additionally, a file name that begins with a period (.) or a tilde (~) isn't supported.
2. Page 2 of 6
Any file that’s currently open by an application (for example, an Excel .xlsx file) can't be
synced by OneDrive for Business.
You can't upload files that have a *.tmp or *.ds_store extension, and you can't upload
desktop.ini, thumbs.db, or ehthumbs.db files.8
Additionally, you cannot upload desktop.ini, thumbs.db, or ehthumbs.db.
o Additional blocked file types in SharePoint Online:9

In addition to the web interface for OneDrive for Business, there are desktop synchronization
apps for some platforms. The OneDrive for Business sync app lets customers synchronize their
OneDrive for Business library or other available SharePoint site libraries to their local computer.
The Windows sync app is available with Office 2013 or Office Pro Plus for Student subscription
that includes Office 2013 applications. UGAMail’s Microsoft Office 365 Plan A2 for Students
does not include the OneDrive for Business sync app, so customers who do not have Office
2013, will have to download of the OneDrive for Business sync app from Microsoft.10
OneDrive
for Business clients are available for:
OD4B Client Available OD4B Client Not Available w/
Workaround
Windows 7 & 811
iOS 12
Windows Phone13
Windows Tablet14
Android15
Macintosh16
Note: The OneDrive for Business web interface allows for the uploading and download of
files, but does not allow for the uploading of folders. The uploading of folders requires a sync
client.17
Windows customers will find their synchronized files in File Explorer, under Favorites.
Customers synchronizing an Office 365 OneDrive for Business library in Windows 7 or 8 will
find their synchronized files in the OneDrive for Business (C:Users<login name>OneDrive
for Business) folder. Files located in the OneDrive for Business folder will have their changes
synchronized automatically with their OneDrive for Business library when they are next online.
In addition to One Drive for Business, the SharePoint Online license gives customers:
o A SharePoint My Site
o Newsfeeds, Sites & OneDrive links on the Outlook Web App menu
Support Model:
Provisioning/De-provisioning
o Build upon the Student Advantage PowerShell Script to license “eligible”
customers.
Administration/Support
o UGAMail Administrators – Provision eligible customers, configure initial
settings, answer support questions, documentation, scripting, automation,
upgrades, and issue escalation to Microsoft.
Primary – Mike Parrish
Secondary – Lewis Noles

Current staff are at capacity for UGAMail, Bomgar, Remedy customer
support, another FTE would be required to start these collaboration
projects.
This is a totally new service that most of our customers have never had experience with,
so initially there will be a significant learning curve which might heavily impact support
and communications resources.
o Extensive support documentation will be required
o Training of administrators and support personnel will be necessary.
o The development of training courses to be presented to both the IT and end-
user communities would be beneficial.

Rolled out OneDrive for Business to 30,000 customers on 4/14/2014.
Around 2400 customers have at least looked at their OD4B/My

We’ve actually implemented OneDrive/SharePoint, but we did not turn on

When we went to Office 365 we enabled all of the features (Exchange,
OneDrive, and Lync Online). We really don’t have any documentation on
how to use OneDrive or Lync for Students. They seem to discover it and
use it on their own.
We will be looking into promoting OneDrive more so folks can start
taking advantage of that 1 TB coming.
