DISCUSSION en classe
Quel est le rôle de la couche physique lors d’une
communication entre deux applications?
Quels sont les éléments de la couche physique
et les responsabilités?
Comment convertir l’information (exemple texte)
en suite binaire (0 et 1)?
8
9. La couche physique ?
DISCUSSION en classe
l’ordinateur
ASCII
Table sur 7 bits par caractère
27 (128) caractères de base
13
17. Et le 8ième bit ???
“Extended ASCII”
2 8 (256) caractère possible (incluant les 127 de
la table ASCII)
Les caractère de + nous permettre d’avoir des
caractère spéciaux (tel que “é”)
17
18. Un octet vs un bit???
Un octet est un groupe de 8 bits
En anglais, bit / byte (octet)
Octet = 8 Bits
Ex: 10010111

In a networking course, it seems good to begin with a preliminary definition of the word, “network.”
According to this book, “Our preliminary definition of a network is a communication system that allows application programs on different hosts to work together.”
This figure looks at networks from the user’s point of view—the only viewpoint that matters in the end.
The definition focuses on networks because users only care about applications. The rest is details they don’t care about.
The network is shown as a cloud to indicate that the workings of the network should be invisible to users
Of course, we have to look inside the network to make it serve user needs.
[At the beginning of the 20th century, an immigrant came to America.
He had been told that the streets in America were paved with gold.
When he got there, he found that the streets weren’t even paved.
Guess who was going to do the paving?]

<Read the slide.>
[“Bit” is an abbreviation for “binary digit.” Digits are the numbers from 0 through 9. As noted later, the word, “digit” is a synonym for finger.]
<number>
Non-binary data must be encoded into binary.
For instance, “Hello” would be encoded as 11011001…
There are many types of data that have to be encoded in binary. <Read through the list.>
Each data type needs a different binary conversion method.
<number>
<Read the slide.>

<Then walk through the image.>
<number>
There are twelve characters, including the space between the two words and the exclamation point.
Therefore, you would need to transmit 12 bytes.
<number>
<Read the slide.>
<number>
Before we talk in detail about syntax, we need to introduce a new term, the “octet.”
An octet is a group of eight bits.
“Isn’t that a byte?” you ask? YES!
Computer people measure length in bytes, but networking people traditionally measure length in octets, so you need to get used to the terminology.
The term “octet” is at least logical. An octopus has eight arms. An octagon has eight sides.
<Question: Which month is October?
Answer: It is the 10th month, not the 8th.. The Romans screwed things up when they added July and August to honor Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar, moving October from the 8th month to the 10th month.>

1. A length of UTP wiring is called a UTP cord.
2. The cord has 8 wires organized in 4 pairs. Each pair’s two wires are twisted around each other, as we will see later.
3. There is an 8-pin RJ-45 connector at each end of the cord.
<number>
<Read the text box, pointing out each item in turn.>
<number>
Now we will look at categories of UTP wiring.
As the slide title says, category is a measure of wire QUALITY.
Higher quality wire can send signals farther at high speeds.
Most UTP sold today is Category 5e or Category 6 wiring.
For 10 Gbps, Category 6A or Category 7 wiring will be needed.
Category 7 is SHIELDED twisted pair. There is metal shielding around each pair and around the four pairs.
This reduces interference, which becomes critical at higher speeds.
[Think of crazy people who put tin foil on their heads to keep the government from reading their thoughts.]
<number>
UTP is one important data transmission medium.
Another is optical fiber, which carries light signals.
<number>
<Read the text box.>
<number>
UTP and fiber are not really competitors. By and large, they are used for different purposes.
<Read the text boxes.>
Sometimes, fiber is used for access lines, and sometimes UTP is used for trunk lines, but these are exceptions.

<Walk through the comparison between LAN fiber and the type of fiber that carriers use.>
<Then read the box at the bottom for emphasis.>
<number>
Now we come to our third type of medium, radio transmission.
<number>
<Compare and contrast the two types of antennas.>
Question: Which is used for mobile telephones?
Answer: Omnidirectional antennas.
Question: Why omnidirectional antennas?
Answer: Distances are fairly short, and there is no way to know where to point the antennas.
[Imagine having to walk around with a dish all the time to use your mobile phone!]
<number>
<Read the text box.>
<number>
<Read the slide.>
<number>
Having looked at applications and quality of service, we will now begin to look at how networks operate.
We will begin with what switches do with messages, which are called frames in switched networks.
<Read the text box; then go on to the next screen.>
<number>
Most networks have more than one switch.
This is a building with a basement equipment room and two floors of offices.
On each floor, stations connect to a workgroup switch via wires or wireless transmission.
A core switch in the basement equipment room connects the workgroups switches on each floor to one another.
There also is a router that connects the building to the outside world.
<number>
In Ethernet, hosts connect to workgroup switches.
Core switches connect switches together.
The group of all core switches is called the network’s core.
Ethernet switches MUST be organized in a hierarchy.
If you create a loop, bad things happen.
<Trace the single path between Client PC1 and Server X.>
<Trace the single possible path between Client PC1 and Server Y.>
<number>
Each trunk line along the way has a distance limit.
<Go through the distance limits on each of the three links.>
<number>
This is the layout of the Ethernet MAC layer frame.
Each field is a certain number of octets long.
The preamble frame arrives first.
