1. Preface
Who says that menopause is no laughing matter? After skimming most of the
available menopause materials, we’ve learned that this is a topic that needs
some serious lightening up. Period Peace does not contain much scary informa-
tion about terrible mid-life diseases, nasty bodily changes, or expensive
remedies. (That information can be found in all of those “other” books).
Period Peace is a unique book that will provide EHH (a little Education,
lots of Humor, and some Hope) for peri-menopausal women (PMW’s) who
want sound bites of wisdom and a full serving of fun.
We’ve included to some of the fun activities of our youth such as: word scram-
bles, mazes, crossword puzzles, and more. Our version of this fun and familiar
format contains a distinctly mature menopausal twist. We’ve also included some
of our favorite comfort food recipes. Why? Because we couldn’t possibly have
written a book about and for women without sharing recipes and talking about
food.
Don’t think Period Peace is all just fun and games because we have also
included what we believe to be the most important factoids and practical
tips to help you navigate through menopause on the more peaceful side.
After interacting with Period Peace, PMW will have the essential information
required to put menopause into perspective. They will laugh and learn that
they are in the same (sweaty) boat with millions of other women in this
stunning stage of life.
2. Introduction
There are 43 million of us who are facing peri-menopause and menopause
(that is a lot of women)!!! Peri-menopause is a big deal. It happens whether
you want it to or not. Lots of misinformation is out there...too much
information is out there, so don’t believe all the bad press. Symptoms can
be non-existent, bothersome, and/or scary and it can make you feel crazy
but that doesn’t (necessarily) mean you are. Women get it but still don’t talk
about it freely. Menopause is like a very grown up version of adolescence
for women only and like any other sensitive subject, only we can make
jokes about it. Menopausal women are hot and menopause is not conta-
gious.
We have to learn to live with this thing and learning through play helps.
Everyone is entitled to her own customized, personalized menopause. It’s
ok to be irregular women. Put this book on the coffee table - put another
copy in the bathroom. As you read this book, if the lines at the corners of
your mouth go up, we have succeeded!

14. Period Peace Granola
Join the earthy crunchy movement Ingredients:
This recipe is a pain in the butt to make, but it is worth 6 cups of rolled oats
every second. It is perfect for getting your mind off of 1 8 oz. bag of sliced almonds
anything else, because you have to concentrate on this 1 8 oz bag of slivered almonds
process in order not to wreck the recipe. 1 8 oz. bag of broken up pecans
1 bag of sweetened coconut
(Dress lightly because the physical work involved in 1 cup of powdered milk
this recipe, as well as being so close to the broiler for so 1 cup of vegetable oil
long will make you sweat, and therefore, you can con- 1 cup of honey
sider it exercise!) Double this recipe because it is really 2 cups of ground almonds
delicious and also because it is so much of a hassle, that 8 oz of rainins
you won’t want to make it again real soon.)
15. Directions:
Turn on broiler.
Tightly cover a half of a sheet-cake pan with foil.
Spread all nuts evenly on the pan and place pan in the broiler.
Every minute or two take out the pan and move the nuts around with a spatula so that they brown evenly
but don’t burn. When nuts are all browned, move them into a very large metal bowl to cool. Spread coconut
on the pan and repeat the above, being careful to brown and not burn the coconut. (Coconut is sensitive, so
don’t take your eyes away from the broiler for a second!) Add the coconut to the nuts in the bowl. Spread the
rolled oats on the sheet-cake pan, and place them in the broiler until they too are evenly browned. When they
are done, add them to the metal bowl. Add the ground almonds to the dry mixture in the bowl and mix all
of the ingredients together.
Boil the oil and the honey together in a small pot. Then pour this liquid mixture over the nut/oats mixture.
Mix well so that all of the dry ingredients are moistened. (The nut mixture will still seem kind of dry, but
coated!) Reuse the foil if it is still in good shape, and if not, cover pan with new foil. Evenly spread half
on the mixture on the half sheet-cake pan. Return the pan to the broiler, watching the mixture constantly.
When brown, which takes less than a minute, remove the pan from the oven, turn the mixture over with a
spatula, and return the mixture to the oven. This process has to be repeated several times until the mixture is
completely browned. Remove the pan from the oven, and lift the foil with the granola on it, and place it on
a countertop to cool. Put new aluminum foil the sheet-cake pan, and evenly spread the rest of the granola
mixture on the pan. Repeat the above until browned. When it is done, as before, take the pan out of the oven,
lift the foil with the mixture on it and let it cool on the counter-top. Test, (but don’t burn your tongue!).
If desired, add raisins to the mixture when it is still warm.
Allow to cool completely and then refrigerate in an air tight container.
Take a shower.
