Kennedy, became aware that the Soviet Union was supporting the building of missile basis in America’s neighbouring country, Cuba. Kennedy reacted by ordering a naval blockade, which stopped any imports and exports of military goods.
The Soviet Union and the United States pushed this very dangerous situation as far as they could without actually conceding anything to one another, making this a classic example of brinkmanship. The two superpowers became close to the brink of war, as well as the threat of a nuclear war escalated until steps were taken to reduce the tension between these two countries. The reasons for the Soviet Union to ease tension with their rival were to save money, it was unsustainable and better relations with the United States could open up more trade. The reasons for the United States to ease tensions were to spend money on other aspects, such as social programs because their economy was becoming severely strained.
The superpowers met on various accounts to sign treaties as well as searching for other measures to reduce tension. This showed how countries with different ideologies are able to work together towards differences through diplomacy.
Lacey Pilgrim & Hannah Moulds
