Driver waits for ambulance to take ailing Chula Vista man
CHULA VISTA — Who says good service is gone?
La-Z-Boy furniture delivery man Hugo Peña snapped into action when he
saw a Chula Vista customer’s neighbor lying unconscious and alone on a
front porch in June, calling an ambulance for the man and waiting with
him until paramedics arrived.
The Garden Grove resident was honored with a “Helping Hand” award
last week for going beyond the call of duty to help Ed Ross, who had
suffered a heart attack. On hand for the ceremony were Ross, who is
recovering at home, and Chula Vista city and fire officials, who
commended Peña for his diligence.
Peña returned to work after helping Ross and completed 17 more
deliveries, a testament to how dedicated he is to the job, according to his
manager.
“Since he began making deliveries for us a little over a year ago, Hugo has
consistently impressed us with his hard work ethic and exceptional
customer service,” San Diego LaZBoy manager Elaine Marlow said in a
news release.
The unlikely hero caught the attention of senior La-Z-Boy executives, who

touted Peña as a model of good customer service.
