CHARLOTTE, N.C.--It was an exciting day on a gloomy, rainy Monday, when a
tractor trailer truck full of furniture from La-Z-Boy, arrived at Assistance League
Center and Thrift Shop on South Tryon Street.
Volunteers were on hand to unload the truck into the warehouse. The furniture
will be sold through the Thrift Shop at discounted prices.
Proceeds from the Thrift Shop support the community-based philanthropic
programs of Assistance League benefiting at risk children and their families.
Also on hand was Angela Broome, CEO of American Red Cross, Carolina Piedmont
Region.
Red Cross works in partnership with Assistance League of Charlotte to aid families
dislocated by fire and military families.
Red Cross gives these families coupons, redeemable at the Thrift Shop, allowing
them to purchase clothing and furniture at further-discounted rates while
providing them with choices and the dignity of personal selection.
Along with coupons, another Assistance League program, Operation Bookbag, has
provided Red Cross with, school –supply filled backpacks for distribution at the
time of a residence fire since 1999.
