   A Learning Commons
“ a flexible and responsive approach to helping schools focus on learning
collaboratively. It expands the learning experience, taking students and
educators into virtual spaces beyond the walls of a school.

A Learning Commons is a vibrant, whole-school approach, presenting
exciting opportunities for collaboration among teachers, teacher-librarians
and students. Within a Learning Commons, new relationships are formed
between learners, new technologies are realized and utilized, and both
students and educators prepare for the future as they learn new ways to
learn.

And best of all, as a space traditionally and naturally designed to facilitate
people working together, a school’s library provides the natural dynamics
for developing a Learning Commons.

It expands the learning experience, taking students and educators into virtual spaces beyond the walls of a school. A Learning Commons is a vibrant, whole-school approach, presenting exciting opportunities for collaboration among teachers, teacher-librarians and students.   1. My background. Schools I have worked in and visited/advisedEvery school different,Every library different, Every librarian different. No one model. But there are pitfalls, overall aims, ideals, modelsI have visited over 50 school libraries around the UK in the last 10/15 years including some very new ones e.gDjanogly, Peterborough’s Thomas Deacon Academy. As I worked as an Academies Lead Practitoner I had the opportunity of visiting lots of brand new schools – not always a success – do architects understand libraries and their role? Design them like public libraries with no space to accommodate a class. Fit them in as an afterthought!Capital City Academy – Sir Norman Foster design – stuck at the back of the building in top floor corner! New librarian insisted it was relocated to main entrance – first thing you see on arriving in the school. Powerful message – glass . Use of glass ?Noise? Issues – practicalities etc.An opportunity to develop your role as librarian and the central role of the library in your schoolEmphasis on every child having a laptopDo we need a library? Virtual libraries.Some new schools designed without a library!!! Encouraging that an IT advisor has organised this day and acknowledges the role of the library and more importantly the librarian as fundamental to learning. There is an assumption that if a school gives every student a laptop or Ipad that they will no longer require a library!(Deptford Green- Learning Zones around the schoolEastlea, Ormiston Park etc - new school refurb –no library
