Top Explanations for Those Who Chose Student
Experience as One of Their Top Three Priorities
13
 General student experience, needs, and
enrollment
 Student activities, involvement, and community
 Quality of education
 Opportunities for new/different learning
experiences
 Student recruitment and current enrollment
 Student retention
 Student preparedness before and after graduation
Sample Comments
General student experience, needs, and enrollment
14
 “Students are the reason for the institution.”
 “As a student I often just feel like a statistic.”
 “I think that the Student Experience should be the top priority of the Transition
Advisory Team because the students fund the school and make up the
University, and therefore should be the core concern of changes within the LSU
system.”
 “This is a college, not strictly a business. We need to get back to students enjoying
this time of their lives!!!”
 “If not for faculty and students, the university would not need to exist. Research
expands existing knowledge and can transfer technology into application, but the
role of the university is education of the populace, not training for jobs.”
Sample Comments
Student activities, involvement, and community
15
 “I feel as if the other areas are well accounted for, but on the New Orleans
campus especially I do not personally feel connected with anyone other than my
department. I believe there could be more activities or event to unite the entire
campus. LSU in BR has an excellent student experience, and I feel as though that is
something the NO campus could improve the most.”
 “It is hard to know everything that is going on on campus. I wish there was
something that I could look at all of the activities and plan out what I could go to.
Even something where I could plug in my interests and see what is going on. Like if
there were and easier way to search for things to do on campus each night. There
are many things that I am still discovering that I wish I had known about in the
past.”
 “LSU needs to do a better job of valuing the student experience outside of the
classroom, providing tools for increased leadership and learning
opportunities, and create a culture of student engagement beyond football!”
Sample Comments
Quality of education
16
 “If not for faculty and students, the university would not need to exist. Research
expands existing knowledge and can transfer technology into application, but the
role of the university is education of the populace, not training for jobs.”
 “We need to ensure that students have a rich experience on campus. Learning
occurs across a spectrum of environments, not just inside a classroom. Ensuring
high quality programs and other educational endeavors is critical. Also, if your
students have a rich, well-rounded experience, they tend to give money back to
the institution once they graduate.”
 “LSU is has a mission to educate. It must focus on providing tools for success and
enhanced student experiences to retain and attract students (which are also vital
to funding operations).”
Sample Comments
Opportunities for new/different learning experiences
17
 “More student interactive learning is needed to better bridge and integrate the
basic sciences and clinical aspects of medicine.”
 “Brick and mortar universities will only thrive if they provide a better learning
experience than online schools. Group learning, flipping courses to utilize
classroom time for more than lecturing, and research experiences must be
provided at larger rates than currently done. The student experience must be
conducive to learning in and out of the classroom.”
 “The student experience should be closely linked to academics.”
 “Once the Academic programs and finance situations are stable, the next step
would be to ensure that students have access to the same experience regardless
of the campus attended. These experiences should include both those met in the
classroom as well as outside the classroom.”
Sample Comments
Student recruitment and current enrollment
18
 “The students are who bring in the tuition dollars and thus their experience must
be the best possible. Enhancing the student experience will help in future
recruitment and possibly even in recruiting better professors to teach the
students.”
 “If we're not meeting student needs and expectations with regard to the "real"
world, then we won't have much of an enrollment. Hence academics become
moot.”
 “From a recruiting and retention standpoint, the Student Experience is critical. It
needs to be addressed in terms not only for traditional students, but also not-
traditional, international, and online students as well.”
 “Students should have the experience here that makes them want to give back to
LSU. Not just financially, but also through volunteering, helping to recruit, and
being proud to say they went to such a great school.”
Sample Comments
Student preparedness before and after graduation
19
 “Better prepare students for real-world skills (i.e. job-hunting, budgeting, etc.)”
 “The UCFY and UCAC departments need to have better information prepared for
new students, with regard to moving into a students Major College. There seems
to be a communication issue between the two with what a students needs are for
moving into their Major College. An example is that students are told that they
should take electives instead of following their Major Colleges flow chart in case
they decide they do not want to major in that field.”
 “Beginning students need much better study skills coming out of high school, and
they need much more effective advisement on selecting a major and on career
choices.”
 “I am student. At the heart of the mission of LSU is training and educating
students so they may better serve the public and the practice of medicine in the
future. Students are most suffering from the inconsistencies in training
sites, funding changes, access to patients and the lack of trained educators in the
private sector of the private-public partnerships. Students are the future!”
Sample Comments
Student retention
20
 “Without adequate student experience we will not be able to recruit students into
the LSU System. LSU Shreveport needs students life and dorms(!). I firmly believe
that students who spend a lot of time on campus excel in their academic (and
later professional) life. This is directly correlated with retention. With students on
our campus, we could get more students interested in research, student
activities, etc.”
 “Positive Student Experience = Retention.”
 “Retention of students should be a top priority, and we do that by using class time
effectively through active learning strategies and engaging students, building
student networks and offering support services.”
 “The student experience creates retention and builds future strong alumni and
development.”

LSU in BR has an excellent student experience, and I feel as though that is something the NO campus could improve the most.”  “It is hard to know everything that is going on on campus. I wish there was something that I could look at all of the activities and plan out what I could go to. Even something where I could plug in my interests and see what is going on. Like if there were and easier way to search for things to do on campus each night. There are many things that I am still discovering that I wish I had known about in the past.”  “LSU needs to do a better job of valuing the student experience outside of the classroom, providing tools for increased leadership and learning opportunities, and create a culture of student engagement beyond football!”
  • 16. Sample Comments Quality of education 16  “If not for faculty and students, the university would not need to exist. Research expands existing knowledge and can transfer technology into application, but the role of the university is education of the populace, not training for jobs.”  “We need to ensure that students have a rich experience on campus. Learning occurs across a spectrum of environments, not just inside a classroom. Ensuring high quality programs and other educational endeavors is critical. Also, if your students have a rich, well-rounded experience, they tend to give money back to the institution once they graduate.”  “LSU is has a mission to educate. It must focus on providing tools for success and enhanced student experiences to retain and attract students (which are also vital to funding operations).”
  • 17. Sample Comments Opportunities for new/different learning experiences 17  “More student interactive learning is needed to better bridge and integrate the basic sciences and clinical aspects of medicine.”  “Brick and mortar universities will only thrive if they provide a better learning experience than online schools. Group learning, flipping courses to utilize classroom time for more than lecturing, and research experiences must be provided at larger rates than currently done. The student experience must be conducive to learning in and out of the classroom.”  “The student experience should be closely linked to academics.”  “Once the Academic programs and finance situations are stable, the next step would be to ensure that students have access to the same experience regardless of the campus attended. These experiences should include both those met in the classroom as well as outside the classroom.”
  • 18. Sample Comments Student recruitment and current enrollment 18  “The students are who bring in the tuition dollars and thus their experience must be the best possible. Enhancing the student experience will help in future recruitment and possibly even in recruiting better professors to teach the students.”  “If we're not meeting student needs and expectations with regard to the "real" world, then we won't have much of an enrollment. Hence academics become moot.”  “From a recruiting and retention standpoint, the Student Experience is critical. It needs to be addressed in terms not only for traditional students, but also not- traditional, international, and online students as well.”  “Students should have the experience here that makes them want to give back to LSU. Not just financially, but also through volunteering, helping to recruit, and being proud to say they went to such a great school.”
  • 19. Sample Comments Student preparedness before and after graduation 19  “Better prepare students for real-world skills (i.e. job-hunting, budgeting, etc.)”  “The UCFY and UCAC departments need to have better information prepared for new students, with regard to moving into a students Major College. There seems to be a communication issue between the two with what a students needs are for moving into their Major College. An example is that students are told that they should take electives instead of following their Major Colleges flow chart in case they decide they do not want to major in that field.”  “Beginning students need much better study skills coming out of high school, and they need much more effective advisement on selecting a major and on career choices.”  “I am student. At the heart of the mission of LSU is training and educating students so they may better serve the public and the practice of medicine in the future. Students are most suffering from the inconsistencies in training sites, funding changes, access to patients and the lack of trained educators in the private sector of the private-public partnerships. Students are the future!”
  • 20. Sample Comments Student retention 20  “Without adequate student experience we will not be able to recruit students into the LSU System. LSU Shreveport needs students life and dorms(!). I firmly believe that students who spend a lot of time on campus excel in their academic (and later professional) life. This is directly correlated with retention. With students on our campus, we could get more students interested in research, student activities, etc.”  “Positive Student Experience = Retention.”  “Retention of students should be a top priority, and we do that by using class time effectively through active learning strategies and engaging students, building student networks and offering support services.”  “The student experience creates retention and builds future strong alumni and development.”
