This document provides guidance on planning and hosting a successful TweetUp event in 5 phases: pre-planning, pre-event, during event, post event, and measuring success. Key recommendations include choosing an appropriate location, promoting the event on multiple social media platforms and with local influencers, live tweeting during the event, taking photos to share afterwards, and evaluating success based on the event goals. The overall message is that TweetUps are most enjoyable when the host is engaged and having fun, which helps create a positive atmosphere for attendees.
6. tweetup n. A real world meeting between two or more people who know each other through the online Twitter service. n. A live event which has been promoted primarily on Twitter. What is a TweetUp?
13. A good Hash Tag.. eg. #roofup (a TweetUp on a roof deck)(#brontosaurus just wont convey what you are really trying to communicate)
14. Choose a good location for your event(250 people in an Irish Bar in Southie just won’t work, no matter how much you want it to)Yes Gents/GentetsSize Matter’sTheme, WiFi, Parking, Kid Friendly, Food, SecurityOthers?
15. Promote!!Twitter is great but don’t forget EventBrite, Facebook, linkedIn, MySpace, your blog, and everywhere else your audience spends time.
16.
17.
18.
19. Leverage your local Social Media Community.. Eg. @BostonTweetUp (Yes this is shameless (however, very effective for you) self promotion)
20. Line up a event photographer/ Videographer (even if its you) (If a tree falls in a forest and there are no photographs or video, can you really be sure that it happened?)
25. Monitor the feeling and atmosphere (encourage fun and socializing if its not organic) In Person and online
26. Tweet updates and have twitter conversations during the event (Make sure there is wireless so your guests will do a lot of this for you, but even if there isn’t there are always mobile twitter apps)
27. Provide name tags (encourage twitter handle) (Have photographer capture nametags… Eg. twitter id because you know you won’t remember them all)
28. Give out prizes and/ or Giveaways (People LOVE free stuff, but it’s not a requirement for a successful TweetUp)
37. Why #RoofUp was such a great success The goal of the TweetUp was to hold the first TweetUp on a Roof Deck in Boston, and for the host to become better known in the social media community. Sara got what She wanted Success depends on the goals of each individual event
38. But its always nice when other people like it too… 33% 93%
39. Now its the time to: Post Pictures on Flicker (or venue of choice) (people love pictures, especially of themselves)
40. Follow up with everyone via Twitter remember to look at the pics (nametags) if you forgot twitter handles
41. Create a blog summary post, a podcast, or anything else to let people know how much fun it was so that if they couldn’t make it, they will come next time. (or just rub in their faces how much fun you had and that they should have been there)
42. The most important thing to remember when planning a TweetUp (or any other event) is……
43. To be yourself… no matter who that is.You will make your TweetUp yours. If you are having fun, so will everyone else.
