Step 1:
Creative meeting, brainstorming, de-
velopment of a concept: In the begin-
ning, there is of course the idea. We sit
together in a team to think about how
the cover should look like – theoretically
– ranging from the design via the slogan
through to the final cover version.

Step 3:
The shooting. This is the
moment of truth. Have we
considered everything?
Does our plan also work
out in practice? While Emi-
lia Balda and Lisa Fastring
are mixing the cocktail step
by step, Louisa Kampshoff
takes photos of the single
stages. The cover will be a
combination of all shots.
Step 2:
Who? What? When? Where? The next step
is to look for props. Glasses, fresh fruits,
various juices, small umbrellas – so in fact
everything you need for a good-looking
cocktail.
The OIC on Gut Baarking, Bocholt, ser-
ves as a location for the photo shoot
and is booked for the day of the shoo-
ting. Apart from the LB Plus team, Loga-
ta Media Solutions will also be present
to document the development process
and to give professional input, because
they will also be responsible for graphi-
cal post-processing.
Step 4:
Thomas Reiser is responsible for
post-processing. He adds logos, makes
the cocktail look better and edits the
background accordingly. A few minu-
tes after the photo shoot, he can alrea-
dy show us the first results.

Dear customers, business partners &
employees,
W
e are living in a digital age and are constantly
developing further in line with the demands our
customers place on us, our work and with that on
our products. At the LogiMAT that took place in March 2016,
Logata Digital Solutions presented the new “Business AppS-
tore for Logistics”– based on the experiences made with the
logistics mall during the first years, our specialists have taken
up the course of optimizing the product, extended it accor-
ding to the customers’ wishes and also adapted its design.
Now software components can be combined in an easy and
secure way in the form of apps. Also new to the logistics mall
is wps, the warehouse management system of Lanfer Sys-
temhaus. Micro-services now ensure even more user-friend-
liness – read more about it on page 24. Lanfer Automation,
too, provides an exciting insight into their work in this issue.
The automation specialists are the “extended workbench”
of SN Maschinenbau: the global leader in the production
of rotary-type horizontal machines. LEBO shows its export
strength from Austria to Bucharest and provides an insight
into diverse projects. In the field of logistics, we will present
you our location in Birmingham, Britain, and will show you
how the returns of the textile company BONITA are managed
at the location in Duisburg. The future is our common path
and for that young and fresh minds are just as important as
the valuable experiences of our employees who have been
loyal to us for many years or decades. To them we have also
dedicated a few pages of this magazine – to say thank you.
Get infected with our thirst for action and innovation and
discover the new issue of LB Plus.

here and how is digitalization used in logis-

tor now received an answer to that question
in the Open Innovation Center. That after-
noon, the organizers of NRW-Logistikcluster/LOG-IT Club
e.v. Wirtschaftsförderung Bocholt and IHK North Westphalia
offered plenty of opportunities for exchange as well as four
lectures and one panel discussion.
Digital Networking
and Apps as a Trend
Christian Krüger from catkin GmbH provided an insight
into transport logistics and a clever use of digital networking.
“The information of the entire transport chain is combined

ween companies and even mobile employees are simply
integrated into the process via apps. You can access those
apps from all over the world,” says Krüger. According to him,
this new way of working provides transparency and signifi-
cantly reduces the use of paper.
“Apps undoubtedly belong to the mega trends in the logi-
stics sector,” it is stated in the report of the event and this is
where Logata Digital Solution GmbH became involved. Dirk
Meyer presented the “Business AppStore for Logistics” and
the resulting possibilities to comfortably integrate apps.
According to Meyer, customizable apps that network and
exchange information represent the perfect solution for
warehouse logistics. “The result is an individual, consistent
process.

LB GmbH Supports Scholarship
Holders
Florian Lüdiger from Südlohn studies Information
Technology and Software Systems at the university
in Bocholt and as a scholarship holder, LB GmbH sup-
ports him. This German scholarship for young talents
clearly is for the benefit of Mr Lüdiger.
Since 2011, the German government has supported
energetic and committed students with the German
scholarship together with private donors.“It is the big-
gest public-private project in education ever offered in
Germany. The website states that in 2014 alone, 22,500
students benefited from the scholarship.
Both parties involved – the government and in
this case LB GmbH – are each providing half of the
scholarship.

from workstations, mobile devices or smartphones,”says Dirk
Meyer. Logata Digital Solutions has already been offering
these technologies in the logistics mall (www.logistics-mall.

Moreover, they have the possibility to programme a suitable
app together with IT experts – individually for them and cus-

he basis for the cooperation is a product of Lanfer
Automation called energy monitoring.“When and
where are there for instance energy peaks in pro-
duction companies? With energy monitoring, we
want to provide customers with this kind of information to
help them find out the reason why,”Christian Ebbert of Lanfer
Automation explains.“Big potential savings that often remain
undetected can be made here.”
This new tool was interesting for the door and frame manu-
facturer LEBO. The affiliated company was DIN EN ISO 50001
certified at the end of 2015 and has thus implemented a
respective energy management system. One of the key ele-
ments here was energy monitoring.
▶ Energy consumption made visible through animations
Individual Concepts to Achieve the Target
Together, the experts of Lanfer Automation and Frank Wen-
nemaring, LEBO employee responsible for energy manage-
ment, have equipped the production halls with correspon-
ding measuring devices at the most important points. “The
measuring points were connected to the local network and
with the help of the right software, all recorded data is directly
processed and displayed in the form of diagrams,”Frank Wen-
nemaring explains. “The data is permanently collected and
discussed in our energy team meetings. First possibilities to
optimize processes are currently being reviewed. That is why
there was for instance an inspection date with the manufac-
turer of our dust extraction system to determine potential sa-
vings and to look into ways of implementing new solutions.”
Making Energy Visible
In order to be able to present the product “energy monito-
ring” in a clear and competent way, Lanfer Automation got
another affiliated company on board.“We have had the idea
to have a film made about this topic using the example of
LEBO. We use this film for meetings with our customers and
it can also be found on our website,” says Christian Ebbert.
“However before that, we had developed a screenplay to-
gether with Logata Media Solutions, that makes such a theo-
retical subject concrete and above all visible.”
By integrating animated measuring curves into the film, the
film-makers have for instance managed to show energy con-
sumption and to sensitize for the issue. Thanks to interviews
with experts of Lanfer Automation and LEBO, the film also
demonstrates how useful and helpful energy monitoring is.
“A special challenge for us was to show things you usually
cannot see. However, in close cooperation with Mr Ebbert
and Mr Wennemaring we have made a great film,” produc-
tion manager Peter Wecking sums up.

n addition to classic warehousing operations for BO-
NITA at the location of WM GROUP in Hamminkeln,
the logistics service provider now also undertakes the
returns management of the fashion company. “With
that, we also support our customer regarding the change
of the season,” logistics manager Christoph Erwig explains.
When changing from Autumn/Winter collection to Spring/
Summer collection or the other way around, all goods from
the stores are brought to the location of WM GROUP in Duis-
burg – unsorted. Christoph Erwig:“First of all, our employees
presort the clothes on the basis of the criteria specified by
BONITA first. That means that the clothes are sorted by type
before they are packed into homogeneous handling units.”

The Company
The TOM TAILOR GROUP is one of Europe’s leading fashion
and lifestyle companies. With its two umbrella brands TOM
TAILOR and BONITA, the group offers trendy clothes and
accessories in the mid-range price segment and appeals
to complementary target groups aged between 0 and 60
years.
The group of companies sells its brands in over 40 countries.
The brand BONITA is sold in more than 1000 retail stores as
well as in vertically operated wholesale areas all across Eu-
rope. The brandTOMTAILOR is not only sold in 460 centrally
located retail stores, but also via the wholesale segment,
including 200 franchise stores, around 2900 shop-in-shops
and almost 8400 multi-label stores. Moreover, both brands
are available online – the brand TOM TAILOR is sold online
in 21 different countries. The company has around 6900
employees worldwide.Processes Optimized

Every single piece of clothing is folded, packed into a
polybag for protection and then sent back to the cen-
tral warehouse of BONITA in Hamminkeln on pallets sor-
ted by article. While the stores used to send the goods
to Hamminkeln in the past, all clothes that need to be
processed are now directly sent to Duisburg. Christoph
Erwig: “This saves time and is the most logical way to
proceed.”

The workstations at the location of WM GROUP in the
harbour of Duisburg can be varied depending on the
needs: Goods are sorted and packed for storage at up to
eight workstations on a total of 1425 square metres. With
every change of the season – which is two times a year
– new goods arrive here. The fact that WM GROUP offers
both handling and warehouse space is probably one rea-
son why the fashion and lifestyle company has opted for
WM GROUP.

is quite interesting. This building was originally used as a

combines an animation with a specially composed jingle
and is thus designed for people to experience. “With that
we wanted to follow keywords like “digital”, “networking”

sound elements,”specialist Peter Wecking of the executing

Since 1 January 2016, Thomas Nienaber has been the CEO
of Logata Digital Solutions GmbH. After completing his tele-
communications studies and the man from Bocholt worked
in research and development for five years. After that, the
58-year old communications technology expert undertook
management tasks in all parts of Europe. Most recently,Tho-
mas Nienaber worked for Deutsche Telekom in the Europe
segment.
“My main tasks are to develop the company further so
that our customers know they are in good hands, to deve-
lop and implement a business model that is built on our
strengths and to promote a working environment that lets
people enjoy the work,”Thomas Nienaber explains.
We wish Mr Nienaber all the best for these new tasks and
every success!

that synchronize and communicate with each other during

and which is quickly ready for use – with the
joint project Hub2Move that was presented in

effective and customizable material flow system which ex-
actly meets the requirements mentioned above.
Hub2Move is to allow its users to react more quickly to
fast market changes and short innovation cycles. Until now,
material flow systems have rather been static, inflexible,
controlled centrally and designed for future peaks.

linked with the Business AppStore for Logistics, the logistics

Lanfer Automation has made their contribution in the

simple, fast and uncomplicated. Hub2Move was presented

uring the last months, the logistics mall has
been further optimized and is now available as
an upgraded version. “From now on, the mall is
to be understood as a kind of AppStore,”project
manager Andreas Kemper explains. “The new mall differs
from its predecessor in two important respects.”
Firstly, the project manager mentions the design. The
website is now modern, up-to-date and clearly structured.
Moreover, the website and its features is now responsive
– which ensures that it is perfectly displayed on all end de-
vices. “A responsive design automatically adapts to the end
device used. So from now on, it doesn’t matter whether you
visit the website with your laptop, desktop computer or ta-
blet,” says Kemper. The second aspect makes the mall even
more practical and mobile– in the true sense of the word.
Andreas Kemper: “It is now also possible to download apps
for Android devices via the AppStore.”
▶ The AppStore of the new logistics mall website
First customer projects
From May on, the further developed version of the
mall and its apps will already be used in the raw materials
warehouse of LEBO in Bocholt, Germany. As a mall user, the
door and frame manufacturer simply uses the appropriate
app of the mall. However, it’s also easy to handle the mall
as a provider. “After registration, service providers are able to
offer their products on the virtual marketplace: software as a
service, enterprise applications as well as logistics mall apps,”
Andreas Kemper explains.

« wps: modernized
and new to the logistics mall»
L
ast year, the warehouse management system wps
was already revised and presented in a new design.
Web-based and with a modern look and feel, a lot
was done with regards to user-friendliness in the
last quarter of 2015.
The next step was to align wps with digitalization and
Industry 4.0 and of course, it is now also available for our
customers in the logistics mall. “With the modernization
we have created unique selling points that allow us to
support our customers on their way towards digitalizati-
on,”project manager Björn Renzel explains. One important
aspect is that all parties involved – customers, employees,
machines, robots etc. – are networked along the value-
added chain and that they can access all information re-
▶ Ein Lagersteuerungssystem in Zeiten der Digitalisierung: das neue wps
quired for a specific process at any time. “This is achieved
through the web service in the backend and a suitable
programming that ensures that the data can be accessed
from and displayed on all kinds of end devices,” says Björn
Renzel. “Besides, the backend feature is encapsulated in
little micro-services that can also be called up e.g. by the
customer via web services.” With this system you are fast,
flexible and close to the process. The customer has the
possibility to use a system that is available in 24 hours. All
processes can be integrated with existing ERP systems and
freight forwarders and it does not even have to be expen-
sive: Lanfer Systemhaus offers wps for rent – every month,
users can be added or removed flexibly. In addition, we of-
fer you a professional hotline that is always available with
help and advice. We are at your service when you need us.

A Practical Example
A customer orders goods through a web shop. The web
shop calls up wps web services to create the delivery and
the delivery items. wps automatically reserves the goods
and creates supply transports from the automated high
rack to the picking zone. Those supply transports are sent
to the PLC control of the high rack via an adapter so that
the pallets required are automatically brought to the pick-
up point. At the pick-up point, a sensor scans the pallet
and calls up another wps micro-service. This service crea-
tes a forklift ride from the pick-up point of the high rack
to the picking zone and informs a forklift driver about this
new tour. As soon as the forklift driver confirms this tour
(another micro-service), the order is approved for picking.
The order picker is then led through the picking zone on
optimized routes and brings the picked goods to the dis-
patching station. Here, the goods are packed and labelled.
After the goods have been handed over to the carrier,
another micro-service is called up – as with all previous
steps – to let the client know that the order is on its way
to the end customer. Besides, the end customer receives
an email including the parcel number of the freight for-
warder. “This example shows how wps ensures networ-
king from the end customer of the client through to the
freight forwarder and how it controls all logistics proces-
ses, when used in the logistics sector as a central hub.
The use of wps in the Logistics Locations
of the WM GROUP
Within LB GmbH, the new wps is used at WM GROUP.
The locations in Bocholt, Westerkappeln-Velpe, Duisburg
and Hamminkeln will be equipped with the new standard
step by step.

ipperfürth. A tranquil, medium-sized

Lanfer Automation as an
Extended Workbench
The contact between Markus Kuhlmann of Lanfer Auto-
mation and the responsible electrical engineer of SN Ma-
schinenbau Jan Kronenberg was established at a trade fair
at the beginning of 2015. “At that time Dr.-Ing. Christian
Kettler became the new manager of SN and we got into
conversation,”Kuhlmann remembers.
« From Packet Soup to Paint Bombs:
Lanfer Automation as a Long-Term
Partner of SN Maschinenbau »
Höller, Bosch, Westdickenberg and Laudenberg – SN
combines the technology and innovative strength of the
five most influential German packaging companies. With
five decades of experience, business acumen, foresight,
a unique culture of innovation and enormous personal
commitment, the SN management team has forged the
global leader for horizontal rotary machines. Today, Ger-
man packaging technology specialist SN Maschinenbau
GmbH is a company with a solid past and excellent pro-
spects for the future.
SN Maschinenbau is a strategic supplier for multinational
companies like Nestlé, Kraft Foods or Unilever.
The Company
Dr. Christian Kettler is the part of the management that
primarily controls the fate of the company on site, whe-
reas managing partner Dipl.-Ing. Olaf Clemens is on the
road a lot. Dr. Kettler: “He is the motor of innovation for
SN Maschinenbau. There is no stopping Mr Clemens. He
always provides news ideas and impulses when coming
back from his journeys and establishes a lot of interes-
ting and important contacts.” It is probably thanks to the
unstoppable thirst for action of the entire SN Maschinen-
bau team that the company continues to grow. While the
company had 45 employees in 2010, the number has in-
creased by 230 until today. “This rate of growth is above
average and very, very fast,” Dr. Kettler states. While the
increasing demands of such a strongly growing compa-
ny were integrated into and handled in day-to-day busi-
ness in the past, the graduate engineer now sees it as
one of his tasks to implement new, optimized processes
that need to be adapted. “What has been compensated
for by the great diligence of our employees until now,
needs to be compensated for by optimized processes
in future. There is an enormous identification with the
company and the employees are proud of what we have
achieved. That is the only reason why we could carry on
this workload for such a long time,” Dr. Kettler looks back
to the recent past.

One of the first optimizations the management perfor-
med in the last year was to outsource the switch cabinet
construction. “Lanfer Automation is a specialist in this
field and supports us to ensure stable processes. Besi-
des, outsourcing single elements in a clever way gives us
the possibility to further grow in line with the market at
a moderate pace,” says Dr. Kettler. The so-called “soft fac-
tors” are of high importance for a successful cooperation.
Clean communication prevents costs and ensures optimal
workflows. The details of the cooperation were put down
in a “Letter of Intend” in 2015, which represents the basis.
“One goal should be to integrate Lanfer Automation
as an extended workbench, with everything that comes
with that,” says Dr. Kettler. “For order reasons, the single
parts are still delivered by us. However, the aim should be
to outsource all subtasks included in the long term and
to have a completed switch cabinet delivered in the end.
There is still a lot to be done to determine the course.”
A Common View
of the Future
Besides, Lanfer Automation offers support regarding
software matters. “After having signed the Letter of In-
tend last year, we trained two employees and have been
another Rockwell Solutions Partner beside Siemens ever
since,” Markus Kuhlmann explains. “This would allow us to
also support SN Maschinenbau in software development.”
SN can imagine making single employees of Lanfer Au-
tomation familiar with “the heart of the machines” in the
long term so that they are also able to provide support
that exceeds the construction of switch cabinets. Markus
Kuhlmann:“It is a trustful cooperation and that is what you
need to develop ideas like this. We are very proud to have
such a partner.”

« 145 years of LEBO – Reflections
on the Past & Visions of the Future »
T
his year, Lebo GmbH celebrates its 145th anni-
versary. The company LEBO was founded in the
city centre of Bocholt in 1871 and has been a
family-owned, long-established business ever
since. After the building was completely destroyed during
a fire in 1958, a new building was built on Händelstraße –
which is where the company’s headquarters are still located
today.
In June 2006, LB GmbH absorbed the company and
LEBO Türenwerke GmbH & Co. KG became Lebo GmbH.
Since then, the company has developed further in large
steps. We have met managing director Maximilian Löhr
and talked with him about the past, the power of innova-
tion and visions of the future.
▶ In the interview: Maximilian Löhr
LB Plus: LEBO is a company with a tradition – founded in
1871. A part of LB GmbH since 2006. Let’s look back on the
company’s development: What milestones can you name?
Maximilian Löhr: Looking at the period since 2006, one
of the first milestones surely is the expansion of our range
of white lacquer products. Back then, the trend was rather
towards doors with a wood look, no great future was pre-
dicted for white lacquer doors. However, contrary to all pre-
dictions, we have even expanded our range of white lac-
quer doors. Today, LEBO is known for a high-quality white
lacquer product portfolio covering all price ranges. I would
say that 2013 was a milestone, too. That year, we accele-
rated export activities by building representative offices
abroad and by creating dealership structures. In the same
year, we launched our fire protection product group, which
made us a full-range trader.

ommerliche Temperaturen, der Geruch von Ge-

der Branche zählt. Das Sommerfest soll auch die Chance
geben, sich im eigenen Unternehmen umzuschauen“, so
Wolf weiter. Während die Kinder die Hüpfburg und die Tor-

sich durch den Betrieb führen zu lassen.
Wer macht eigentlich was?
Jeden Tag verbringt man einen Großteil bei der Arbeit, läuft
vielen Leuten tagtäglich über den Weg, aber was macht

man dann schnell ins Gespräch“, so Wolf.

LB Plus: It usually takes more than just one person or
one department to unleash the power of innovation and
the desire to develop further. How does the work at LEBO
look like?
Maximilian Löhr: We all try to drive the company forward
together. LEBO benefits from a proactive cooperation bet-
ween the employees, which is supported by different insti-
tutions. There are for instance product committees where
employees from all departments come together regularly
to exchange ideas and innovations regarding our products.
What’s more – and this is our finger on the pulse of the mar-
ket – we have a dealer council. Here, improvements concer-
ning production and customer service are discussed.
With the recently implemented energy management
system that meets the requirements of the DIN EN 50001
standard, LEBO GmbH received the respective certificate
from TÜV Rheinland in October 2015. With the help of
energy monitoring, energy flows have been documented
and analysed since then, which will result in energy saving
measures over the long term. “In the long term, it also se-
cures the company’s competitiveness and saves electricity
and energy costs,”LEBO energy manager Frank Wennema-

Maximilian Löhr: We work with the raw material wood.
So it’s our obligation to use this raw material responsibly. We
are for instance PEFC-certified for the support of sustainable
forestry.
At the end of 2015, we also started to deal with energy
management and thanks to the implemented energy mo-
nitoring system, we are also ISO 50 001 certified.
The monitoring process allows us to determine energy
peaks and thus to work out measures to save energy. In
this way, we counteract energy waste in all areas.

take up is to increase the export rate.
In near future, our customers will already benefit from
the optimization of our product range. We have the aim
to create a well-structured product portfolio, which is why
we’ll make it clearer for our customers. A lot will be done
in the next time, as we will sharpen the entire market pre-

LEBO will be much influenced by digitalization and Indus-

of robotics and will implement the new solutions together
with Lanfer Automation. It’s worth staying curious. I’m sure
much will happen and it’s especially our customers that will
benefit from it.

« A Film as a‘Silent Sales Assistant’»
I
n autumn 2015, the Logata Media Solutions team recei-
ved a special image film order –in many respects. The
customer: Reifen Fricke GmbH. Tyre specialist dealer,
professional motor vehicle workshop and paint shop.
“With the growing range of services we offer our customers,
we see ourselves as a service provider for all aspects of mo-
bility. This is also what we want the image film to convey,”
managing director Sebastian Wedemeyer explains.
60 61
The Idea: A Film Shot from
First-Person Perspective
“The team of Reifen Fricke had already done some
thinking about the image film beforehand and had a
very specific idea of how it should look like,” production
manager Peter Wecking remembers. The first screenplay
draft came from the customer himself and was used as a
basis to quickly write a final screenplay and make a con-
crete production schedule. “Due to the fact that the film
should lead the customer through the different depart-
ments of the company, many details had to be taken into
consideration beforehand. All scenes were shot from va-
rious perspectives and every little detail shown had to be
just right for editing,” says Wecking. The film was shot at
six different shooting locations in three days and almost
the entire staff of Fricke was involved. “Of course, many
of them were a bit sceptical about standing in front of
a camera first. However, all scepticism disappeared du-
ring the shooting and everyone was very impressed by
the professionalism,” says Sebastian Wedemeyer in retro-
spect. “It was exciting for us to have a look over a film
team’s shoulder.”
Animation as a Central
Design Element
Back in Bocholt the post-production started. Scenes had
to be sorted and the best ones had to be selected, edited
and put together to a film. A special characteristic of the
film is the fact that there is no off-text. “The film will par-
ticularly be shown in our sales area – without sound, as
a silent sales assistant so to speak,” Sebastian Wedemeyer
explains.“That is why it had to be comprehensible without
sound, too.” This is where Thomas Reiser came into play.
Among others, he is a specialist of animations at Logata

“I have developed a design – apart from the intro – that
foregrounds the employees in question for a short time to
introduce them,” the audio-visual media designer explains.
In addition, the film contains inserts that show up in diffe-
rent scenes for information. “We seldom have so many ani-
mations in an image film that has actually been shot in real
life. That is what makes this film so special for us,”says Reiser.
The result is really good and has already been used suc-
cessfully on site since the completion a few months ago.
“Logata Media Solutions is currently working on shorter
sequences that can be integrated into our website as well
as into a YouTube Channel – our cooperation thus already
continues,”Sebastian Wedemeyer says.

At that time, we implemented the first swap body system. It
was a roll-on system that allowed us to easily swap the swap
bodies. Back then, this system was ultramodern and set new
standards,”Löhr says.
Step by step, the company that had been founded ten years
ago further developed itself and arrived in the age of container
shipments in the mid 60s. From Rotterdam, Amsterdam and
Bremerhaven, 20’and 40’containers were shipped to New York
and Montreal.
1966 – The next generation
In 1966, the so-called “White House” – a former residential
building of the German Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway)
located near the first office building – was bought. This is where

his decade was characterized by eco-

of that time together with Hans-Wil-

remembers the formative events of that time. “At
that time, internationalization was already a big
issue even though you cannot compare the situ-
ation with today. In those days, it was a real ad-
venture when a truck rode to France,” Hans-Wil-

1961 – A company grows
In the beginning of the 60s, the first garage with
a work platform was built for the first vehicles. “It

small building is now used as a parking area for

where I was responsible for truck scheduling at first. After some
time, I was also responsible for the expansion of international
business,”Hans-Wilhelm Löhr explains.
1967 – A second garage is built
In the end of the 60s, a second motor vehicle workshop was
built where office and order picking areas can still be found
today. Compared to the first one, this one had four work plat-
forms where the employees could repair vehicles. At that time,
the company’s fleet of vehicles had already grown to 35 tractor
units. The one-man business from 1951 has developed into a
company with more than 120 employees over the years.

10:30 a.m. – Together with Ann-Kathrin Löhr, the two talk
about all projects and tasks for 2016. Beside the already

analysis of personnel data, controlling and compensation
systems are discussed, too.
L
B GmbH is a group of companies with four divisions, 13 companies and more than 800 employees. In our new
section, we would like to give you an insight into different departments. Who does what? A question we will
answer bit by bit in every issue.
76 77
Since October 2015, Melanie Wolbring and Dr. Julia Pradel have centrally managed the human resources department of
LB GmbH. As their responsibilities cover a wide range of fields within the entire group of companies, no day is like the
other. Numerous appointments out of the office, job interviews and meetings determine their daily routine. The offices of
the two human resources managers can be found at Gut Baarking. Here, they are dealing with all areas of human resour-
ces management in the company LB GmbH. We have spent one day with them.
08:00 a.m. – Melanie Wolbring starts her working day at the
desk. “Today, I’m going to write recommendation letters for
different employees. Of course, it’s the immediate supervisors
who evaluate the employees’performance, however, I always
have to write the final letter of recommendation. What’s
more, I have to draw up employment contracts before I have
a meeting with the shareholder Ann-Kathrin Löhr who is
responsible for human resources management. This is also
part of my job,”Wolbring says.
Meanwhile, Dr. Julia Pradel is planning an employee survey
in the office next door. “This employee survey is just one of
the many measures we planned for 2016 apart from the daily
human resources activities. We want to further improve our
human resources work in the group, which is why we are
currently planning group-wide concepts. The central issues
here are human resources development and staff retention.”
▶ Together, Dr. Julia Pradel and Melanie Wolbring
manage the human resources department
12:30 a.m. – Before lunch, employment contracts and
recommendation letters are sent out. In the late afternoon,
Julia Pradel will have another meeting with the works
council of LEBO – a company of the LB Group – and Melanie
Wolbring will have some staff meetings at another location.
This is why they have to gather all relevant documents
together first.
...Melanie Wolbring and Dr. Julia Pradel,
human resources department
15:00 p.m. – At around 05:00 p.m. the two finish work for
the day. “We don’t finish work at the same time every day.
Sometimes, we also have appointments in the evening or a
meeting that takes a bit longer than planned,”says Dr. Pradel.
“No day is like the other.”
12:00 p.m. – Now it’s getting creative. The two are standing
at a flip chart to prepare a workshop for machine operators
working for LEBO. “It’s about mutual training in the setup of
machines – the keyword is internal transfer of know-how,”Dr.
Julia Pradel explains.

  • 3. « editorial » 4 « contents » 5 Hans-Wilhelm Löhr Maximilian Löhr Ann-Kathrin Löhr Matthias Löhr Dear customers, business partners & employees, W e are living in a digital age and are constantly developing further in line with the demands our customers place on us, our work and with that on our products. At the LogiMAT that took place in March 2016, Logata Digital Solutions presented the new “Business AppS- tore for Logistics”– based on the experiences made with the logistics mall during the first years, our specialists have taken up the course of optimizing the product, extended it accor- ding to the customers’ wishes and also adapted its design. Now software components can be combined in an easy and secure way in the form of apps. Also new to the logistics mall is wps, the warehouse management system of Lanfer Sys- temhaus. Micro-services now ensure even more user-friend- liness – read more about it on page 24. Lanfer Automation, too, provides an exciting insight into their work in this issue. The automation specialists are the “extended workbench” of SN Maschinenbau: the global leader in the production of rotary-type horizontal machines. LEBO shows its export strength from Austria to Bucharest and provides an insight into diverse projects. In the field of logistics, we will present you our location in Birmingham, Britain, and will show you how the returns of the textile company BONITA are managed at the location in Duisburg. The future is our common path and for that young and fresh minds are just as important as the valuable experiences of our employees who have been loyal to us for many years or decades. To them we have also dedicated a few pages of this magazine – to say thank you. Get infected with our thirst for action and innovation and discover the new issue of LB Plus. You can access those apps from all over the world,” says Krüger. According to him, this new way of working provides transparency and signifi- cantly reduces the use of paper. “Apps undoubtedly belong to the mega trends in the logi- stics sector,” it is stated in the report of the event and this is where Logata Digital Solution GmbH became involved. Dirk Meyer presented the “Business AppStore for Logistics” and the resulting possibilities to comfortably integrate apps. According to Meyer, customizable apps that network and exchange information represent the perfect solution for warehouse logistics. “The result is an individual, consistent process. 17th Apprenticeship Fair of Volksbank Bocholt “ The information of the entire transport chain is combined and made visible. „ The companies WM GROUP, Lanfer Systemhaus and LEBO all presented the apprenticeships they offer at the 2015 Apprenticeship Fair. In personal conversations, the visitors could ask both trainers and apprentices about anything they wanted to know to form an opinion. “We are always looking for young, motivated and enthusi- astic junior employees who decide to do their apprentice- ship in our company. That is also why we have already pl- anned to also participate in the 2016 Apprenticeship Fair,” human resources manager Melanie Wolbring says.

  • 8. 14 15 «ExploitingPotentialTogether:Intheareaof energymonitoring,nolessthanthreecompa- niesofLBhavecooperatedwitheachother» T he basis for the cooperation is a product of Lanfer Automation called energy monitoring.“When and where are there for instance energy peaks in pro- duction companies? With energy monitoring, we want to provide customers with this kind of information to help them find out the reason why,”Christian Ebbert of Lanfer Automation explains.“Big potential savings that often remain undetected can be made here.” This new tool was interesting for the door and frame manu- facturer LEBO. The affiliated company was DIN EN ISO 50001 certified at the end of 2015 and has thus implemented a respective energy management system. One of the key ele- ments here was energy monitoring. ▶ Energy consumption made visible through animations Individual Concepts to Achieve the Target Together, the experts of Lanfer Automation and Frank Wen- nemaring, LEBO employee responsible for energy manage- ment, have equipped the production halls with correspon- ding measuring devices at the most important points. “The measuring points were connected to the local network and with the help of the right software, all recorded data is directly processed and displayed in the form of diagrams,”Frank Wen- nemaring explains. “The data is permanently collected and discussed in our energy team meetings. First possibilities to optimize processes are currently being reviewed. That is why there was for instance an inspection date with the manufac- turer of our dust extraction system to determine potential sa- vings and to look into ways of implementing new solutions.” Making Energy Visible In order to be able to present the product “energy monito- ring” in a clear and competent way, Lanfer Automation got another affiliated company on board.“We have had the idea to have a film made about this topic using the example of LEBO. We use this film for meetings with our customers and it can also be found on our website,” says Christian Ebbert. “However before that, we had developed a screenplay to- gether with Logata Media Solutions, that makes such a theo- retical subject concrete and above all visible.” By integrating animated measuring curves into the film, the film-makers have for instance managed to show energy con- sumption and to sensitize for the issue. Thanks to interviews with experts of Lanfer Automation and LEBO, the film also demonstrates how useful and helpful energy monitoring is. “A special challenge for us was to show things you usually cannot see. However, in close cooperation with Mr Ebbert and Mr Wennemaring we have made a great film,” produc- tion manager Peter Wecking sums up. When changing from Autumn/Winter collection to Spring/ Summer collection or the other way around, all goods from the stores are brought to the location of WM GROUP in Duis- burg – unsorted. Christoph Erwig:“First of all, our employees presort the clothes on the basis of the criteria specified by BONITA first. That means that the clothes are sorted by type before they are packed into homogeneous handling units.” 16 17 ▶ At the location in Duisburg, the goods are sorted as homogeneous handling units The Company The TOM TAILOR GROUP is one of Europe’s leading fashion and lifestyle companies. With its two umbrella brands TOM TAILOR and BONITA, the group offers trendy clothes and accessories in the mid-range price segment and appeals to complementary target groups aged between 0 and 60 years. The brand BONITA is sold in more than 1000 retail stores as well as in vertically operated wholesale areas all across Eu- rope. The brandTOMTAILOR is not only sold in 460 centrally located retail stores, but also via the wholesale segment, including 200 franchise stores, around 2900 shop-in-shops and almost 8400 multi-label stores. • 15. «Easier,moreuser-friendlyandmoremo- dern:thenewlogisticsmallinanewdesign» D uring the last months, the logistics mall has been further optimized and is now available as an upgraded version. “From now on, the mall is to be understood as a kind of AppStore,”project manager Andreas Kemper explains. “The new mall differs from its predecessor in two important respects.” Firstly, the project manager mentions the design. The website is now modern, up-to-date and clearly structured. Moreover, the website and its features is now responsive – which ensures that it is perfectly displayed on all end de- vices. “A responsive design automatically adapts to the end device used. So from now on, it doesn’t matter whether you visit the website with your laptop, desktop computer or ta- blet,” says Kemper. The second aspect makes the mall even more practical and mobile– in the true sense of the word. Andreas Kemper: “It is now also possible to download apps for Android devices via the AppStore.” ▶ The AppStore of the new logistics mall website First customer projects From May on, the further developed version of the mall and its apps will already be used in the raw materials warehouse of LEBO in Bocholt, Germany. As a mall user, the door and frame manufacturer simply uses the appropriate app of the mall. However, it’s also easy to handle the mall as a provider. “After registration, service providers are able to offer their products on the virtual marketplace: software as a service, enterprise applications as well as logistics mall apps,” Andreas Kemper explains. • 16. « wps: modernized and new to the logistics mall» L ast year, the warehouse management system wps was already revised and presented in a new design. Web-based and with a modern look and feel, a lot was done with regards to user-friendliness in the last quarter of 2015. The next step was to align wps with digitalization and Industry 4.0 and of course, it is now also available for our customers in the logistics mall. “With the modernization we have created unique selling points that allow us to support our customers on their way towards digitalizati- on,”project manager Björn Renzel explains. One important aspect is that all parties involved – customers, employees, machines, robots etc. – are networked along the value- added chain and that they can access all information re- ▶ Ein Lagersteuerungssystem in Zeiten der Digitalisierung: das neue wps quired for a specific process at any time. “This is achieved through the web service in the backend and a suitable programming that ensures that the data can be accessed from and displayed on all kinds of end devices,” says Björn Renzel. “Besides, the backend feature is encapsulated in little micro-services that can also be called up e.g. by the customer via web services.” With this system you are fast, flexible and close to the process. The customer has the possibility to use a system that is available in 24 hours. All processes can be integrated with existing ERP systems and freight forwarders and it does not even have to be expen- sive: Lanfer Systemhaus offers wps for rent – every month, users can be added or removed flexibly. In addition, we of- fer you a professional hotline that is always available with help and advice. We are at your service when you need us. 30 31 A Practical Example A customer orders goods through a web shop. The web shop calls up wps web services to create the delivery and the delivery items. wps automatically reserves the goods and creates supply transports from the automated high rack to the picking zone. Those supply transports are sent to the PLC control of the high rack via an adapter so that the pallets required are automatically brought to the pick- up point. At the pick-up point, a sensor scans the pallet and calls up another wps micro-service. This service crea- tes a forklift ride from the pick-up point of the high rack to the picking zone and informs a forklift driver about this new tour. As soon as the forklift driver confirms this tour (another micro-service), the order is approved for picking. The order picker is then led through the picking zone on optimized routes and brings the picked goods to the dis- patching station. Here, the goods are packed and labelled. After the goods have been handed over to the carrier, another micro-service is called up – as with all previous steps – to let the client know that the order is on its way to the end customer. Besides, the end customer receives an email including the parcel number of the freight for- warder. “This example shows how wps ensures networ- king from the end customer of the client through to the freight forwarder and how it controls all logistics proces- ses, when used in the logistics sector as a central hub. The use of wps in the Logistics Locations of the WM GROUP Within LB GmbH, the new wps is used at WM GROUP. The locations in Bocholt, Westerkappeln-Velpe, Duisburg and Hamminkeln will be equipped with the new standard step by step. Photo credits: Lanfer Systemhaus GmbH & Co. At the edge of town, near the Wup- per River, SN Maschinenbau is located – the world’s leading supplier for rotary-type horizontal machines. That means that all machines developed and built here are used in large production companies later on to pack fruit puree into practical squeezable pouches, fill the right mix of powdered soup into the packs or to fill colour into piping bags. 32 33 Lanfer Automation as an Extended Workbench The contact between Markus Kuhlmann of Lanfer Auto- mation and the responsible electrical engineer of SN Ma- schinenbau Jan Kronenberg was established at a trade fair at the beginning of 2015. “At that time Dr.-Ing. Christian Kettler became the new manager of SN and we got into conversation,”Kuhlmann remembers. « From Packet Soup to Paint Bombs: Lanfer Automation as a Long-Term Partner of SN Maschinenbau » Höller, Bosch, Westdickenberg and Laudenberg – SN combines the technology and innovative strength of the five most influential German packaging companies. SN Maschinenbau is a strategic supplier for multinational companies like Nestlé, Kraft Foods or Unilever. The Company Dr. Christian Kettler is the part of the management that primarily controls the fate of the company on site, whe- reas managing partner Dipl.-Ing. Olaf Clemens is on the road a lot. Dr. Kettler: “He is the motor of innovation for SN Maschinenbau. There is no stopping Mr Clemens. He always provides news ideas and impulses when coming back from his journeys and establishes a lot of interes- ting and important contacts.” It is probably thanks to the unstoppable thirst for action of the entire SN Maschinen- bau team that the company continues to grow. While the company had 45 employees in 2010, the number has in- creased by 230 until today. “This rate of growth is above average and very, very fast,” Dr. Kettler states. While the increasing demands of such a strongly growing compa- ny were integrated into and handled in day-to-day busi- ness in the past, the graduate engineer now sees it as one of his tasks to implement new, optimized processes that need to be adapted. “What has been compensated for by the great diligence of our employees until now, needs to be compensated for by optimized processes in future. There is an enormous identification with the company and the employees are proud of what we have achieved. That is the only reason why we could carry on this workload for such a long time,” Dr. Kettler looks back to the recent past. Besi- des, outsourcing single elements in a clever way gives us the possibility to further grow in line with the market at a moderate pace,” says Dr. Kettler. The so-called “soft fac- tors” are of high importance for a successful cooperation. Clean communication prevents costs and ensures optimal workflows. The details of the cooperation were put down in a “Letter of Intend” in 2015, which represents the basis. “One goal should be to integrate Lanfer Automation as an extended workbench, with everything that comes with that,” says Dr. Kettler. “For order reasons, the single parts are still delivered by us. However, the aim should be to outsource all subtasks included in the long term and to have a completed switch cabinet delivered in the end. There is still a lot to be done to determine the course.” A Common View of the Future Besides, Lanfer Automation offers support regarding software matters. “After having signed the Letter of In- tend last year, we trained two employees and have been another Rockwell Solutions Partner beside Siemens ever since,” Markus Kuhlmann explains. “This would allow us to also support SN Maschinenbau in software development.” SN can imagine making single employees of Lanfer Au- tomation familiar with “the heart of the machines” in the long term so that they are also able to provide support that exceeds the construction of switch cabinets. After the building was completely destroyed during a fire in 1958, a new building was built on Händelstraße – which is where the company’s headquarters are still located today. In June 2006, LB GmbH absorbed the company and LEBO Türenwerke GmbH & Co. KG became Lebo GmbH. Since then, the company has developed further in large steps. We have met managing director Maximilian Löhr and talked with him about the past, the power of innova- tion and visions of the future. ▶ In the interview: Maximilian Löhr LB Plus: LEBO is a company with a tradition – founded in 1871. A part of LB GmbH since 2006. Let’s look back on the company’s development: What milestones can you name? Maximilian Löhr: Looking at the period since 2006, one of the first milestones surely is the expansion of our range of white lacquer products. Back then, the trend was rather towards doors with a wood look, no great future was pre- dicted for white lacquer doors. However, contrary to all pre- dictions, we have even expanded our range of white lac- quer doors. Today, LEBO is known for a high-quality white lacquer product portfolio covering all price ranges. I would say that 2013 was a milestone, too. That year, we accele- rated export activities by building representative offices abroad and by creating dealership structures. In the same year, we launched our fire protection product group, which made us a full-range trader. Wer macht eigentlich was? • 29. RR “We work with the raw material wood. So it’s our obligation to use this raw material responsibly. „ LB Plus: It usually takes more than just one person or one department to unleash the power of innovation and the desire to develop further. How does the work at LEBO look like? Maximilian Löhr: We all try to drive the company forward together. LEBO benefits from a proactive cooperation bet- ween the employees, which is supported by different insti- tutions. There are for instance product committees where employees from all departments come together regularly to exchange ideas and innovations regarding our products. What’s more – and this is our finger on the pulse of the mar- ket – we have a dealer council. Here, improvements concer- ning production and customer service are discussed. With the recently implemented energy management system that meets the requirements of the DIN EN 50001 standard, LEBO GmbH received the respective certificate from TÜV Rheinland in October 2015. With the help of energy monitoring, energy flows have been documented and analysed since then, which will result in energy saving measures over the long term. “In the long term, it also se- cures the company’s competitiveness and saves electricity and energy costs,”LEBO energy manager Frank Wennema- ring explains. See here for more information on energy monitoring. LEBO successfully certified For some time, lean management has played an impor- tant role within the entire group of companies, too. Daily shop floor meetings promote exchanges and employee input while ensuring fast and uncomplicated problem solving as well as a potential increase in all areas. The customer: Reifen Fricke GmbH. Tyre specialist dealer, professional motor vehicle workshop and paint shop. “With the growing range of services we offer our customers, we see ourselves as a service provider for all aspects of mo- bility. This is also what we want the image film to convey,” managing director Sebastian Wedemeyer explains. 60 61 The Idea: A Film Shot from First-Person Perspective “The team of Reifen Fricke had already done some thinking about the image film beforehand and had a very specific idea of how it should look like,” production manager Peter Wecking remembers. The first screenplay draft came from the customer himself and was used as a basis to quickly write a final screenplay and make a con- crete production schedule. “Due to the fact that the film should lead the customer through the different depart- ments of the company, many details had to be taken into consideration beforehand. All scenes were shot from va- rious perspectives and every little detail shown had to be just right for editing,” says Wecking. The film was shot at six different shooting locations in three days and almost the entire staff of Fricke was involved. “Of course, many of them were a bit sceptical about standing in front of a camera first. However, all scepticism disappeared du- ring the shooting and everyone was very impressed by the professionalism,” says Sebastian Wedemeyer in retro- spect. “It was exciting for us to have a look over a film team’s shoulder.” Animation as a Central Design Element Back in Bocholt the post-production started. Scenes had to be sorted and the best ones had to be selected, edited and put together to a film. A special characteristic of the film is the fact that there is no off-text. “The film will par- ticularly be shown in our sales area – without sound, as a silent sales assistant so to speak,” Sebastian Wedemeyer explains.“That is why it had to be comprehensible without sound, too.” This is where Thomas Reiser came into play. This is also part of my job,”Wolbring says. Meanwhile, Dr. Julia Pradel is planning an employee survey in the office next door. “This employee survey is just one of the many measures we planned for 2016 apart from the daily human resources activities.
