CPI Course Teaches How to Handle Violent Behavior Women’sCare ofWoodCountytoHostOpenHouse
Women’s Care of Wood County (formerly known as Wood
County Women’s Care), is hosting a community open house
on Sunday, March 29, 2016 from 1 to 3 p.m. at their
brand new facility located at 1214 Ridgewood Drive in Bowl-
ing Green.
Attendees will be able to meet the four obstetrician gynecol-
ogists and staff, tour the spacious new facility, learn about
Wood County Hospital’s Family Birthing Center services,
and have their blood pressure checked for free. There also
will be drawings for a variety of prizes including a Kindle.
Refreshments will be served.
The new facility has 18 exam rooms, two procedure rooms,
and an education room. Patient amenities include compli-
mentary coffee, tea and water, as well as wireless internet
access and charging stations for mobile devices.
Women’s Care is the practice of Drs. Abeer Ahmed, Ian Leg-
gat, Megan Porter, Mary Testa and Nurse Practitioner Mar-
cia Amstutz. Women’s Care provides comprehensive obstet-
rics and gynecologic services for women in all stages of life.
What steps would you take if someone in your care turned
aggressive or violent?
Although you can never predict when a crisis with indi-
viduals in your care, or what might trigger a violent ac-
tion, there is a way to diffuse these potentially dangerous
situations. Attending the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention
program, which is available to all WCH employees, teach-
es staff nonviolent verbal and nonverbal responses to take
back control in these hazardous settings. The course is
taught by Amy Oberhaus, RN, nursing supervisor and
Joseph Higgins, RN.
Developed by CPI—an organization that serves as a re-
source for educating human service providers on proper
responses to unsafe circumstances—the Nonviolent Crisis
Intervention program gives proper training on how staff
should respond to the warning signs of someone who may
be beginning to lose their temper, causing anxiety and
stress for the human service workers taking care of them.
The program concentrates on preventing unsettling be-
havior by communicating with individuals respectfully
and with regard for their well-being, and teaches physical
interventions only as a last resort—when the individual
poses an imminent danger to themselves or others. All
physical interventions are designed to be noninvasive and
to maintain an individual’s dignity.
“We stress the importance of maintaining a caring profes-
sional environment and rapport throughout that person’s
stay,” said Oberhaus.
When faced with these challenging situations, human
service providers may also experience higher levels of
stress and anxiety, but with the Nonviolent Crisis Inter-
vention program, providers can also learn how to cope
with their own emotions after such encounters.
Lisa Barndt,RN, OB department supervisor, agreed the
program was relevant and beneficial to her work setting.
“The CPI program was very useful in learning different
