What is Mendeley

Creating an account
• Visit www.mendeley.com and click on Create account

1. Don’t use Sign in via your
institution!
2. Enter your Email address
(personal or SU) and click on
Continue

2. NB: If you used your
@sun.ac.za address, don’t use
the same password that you
use to log in to Outlook.

• Both are downloadable applications
• MD is the older version that will eventually be replaced by MRM
• Access to downloading MD from Elsevier will cease on 1 September 2022
• It will still be downloadable from the Mendeley Library Guide
• Although newer, MRM is still not recommended because it lacks features of Mendeley
Desktop and its plugin, Mendeley Cite, is very faulty

Difference between Mendeley Desktop (MD) and Mendeley
Reference Manager (MRM)
Installing Mendeley Desktop

• Visit www.mendeley.com and click on Download

• DON’T click on Download now for Windows/MacOS
• Click on Learn More

• Once downloaded, open
the application and sign in

Running Mendeley Desktop for the first time
• Once signed in, Mendeley
will prompt you to install the
MS Word Citation Plugin
• Take note of the reminder
that new downloads of
Mendeley Desktop will no
longer be available from 1
September 2022

• Check the details of every
reference for accuracy
• Garbage in, garbage out!
• You can use the Mendeley
article database to check for
a more complete reference
• Not always accurate!

Installing Mendeley Web Importer
• Click on Tools tab and then on Install Web Importer

• Mendeley will automatically direct you to appropriate web browser

• Click on Add to Chrome (or whichever your preferred browser may be)

• Sign in to the Web Importer using your
Mendeley username and password

Using Mendeley Web Importer
• Go the the Library homepage (https://library.sun.ac.za)
• Search for a topic of your choice using Library Search

• The web importer does not
always work, but can be used
on most databases
• Some references will also
automatically attach the PDF
of an article if it is available
• You can also use it to export
the bibliographic details of a
website
• You can select which folder
or subfolder to export the
results to

• In Mendeley Desktop, click on Sync
• Remember to check your imported references for accuracy!

Importing references directly from
databases
• Go to https://library.sun.ac.za and click on Databases A-Z list

• Scroll down to find the alphabetical list and expand letter E. Click on EBSCOhost Databases

• Click on Continue and on the next page search for a relevant topic
databases

• The Mendeley Web Importer
works well in most electronic
databases
• However, if it does not work,
there are other ways to import
references
• Select multiple sources you
want to add to Mendeley by
clicking on the Folder icon to
the right of each search result

• After selecting your results,
click on Folder at the top right
corner of the page

• Click on Select / deselect all and then click on Export
databases

• Always look for RIS/BibTeX formats for export.
• Click on Save

• The file will automatically be saved in your Downloads folder:
• C:Users[your username]Downloads

• Double-click on the RIS file

• When prompted to select
how you want to open
the file, select Mendeley
Desktop
• Also tick the Always use
this app to open .ris files

• The references will now
appear in Mendeley
Desktop

• You can also import a single
reference from EBSCOhost or
other databases
• Once you have opened a
specific source, click on Export
at the right-hand Tools tab

• Another way to import a
reference is through
Mendeley Desktop
• Click on the Add icon at
the top left corner of the
app and then on Add Files

Downloads folder

• Select the .ris file and click
Open

• Go to ScienceDirect via the Library A-Z List and click on the link
databases

• The Web Importer works
excellently with ScienceDirect
and Scopus because they are
both Elsevier products, as is
Mendeley
• If it doesn’t work, you can still
import a single source, or
multiple sources
• Once selected, click on Export
databases

• Select Export citation to RIS
• The RIS file will automatically
download and you can either
open it via the Downloads
folder, or through Mendeley
databases

You can also drag and drop .ris/.bibtex or other supported files into Mendeley:

• RIS, BibTeX and XML are common formats used to export citations from another
database or programme
• These formats can also be used to import citations from other reference
management software
• Practical demonstration
• Google Scholar
• Scopus

• With Google Scholar results,
you can export citations using
the BibTex file format
• Click on Cite
• At the bottom of the popup
window, click on BibTeX

• On the new window, right-click
and select Save Page As…
• Make sure the file type is set as
Text Document
• Once saved, you can add it via
Mendeley Desktop (the same
way you would add an .ris file)

• Several databases
allow you to export
directly to Mendeley
• In Scopus, select the
sources you want to
add, then click on
export

will automatically
select which fields to
include
• Once selected, tick
Mendeley and click on

to sign in or create an
account
• Just follow the steps to
link Mendeley and
Scopus

• Once you have linked
your accounts, you will
be redirected to the
results page.
• Again, click on Export
and the popup window
to the right will appear.
Select Mendeley and
click on Export
• When finished, the
following notification
will appear
Remember to Sync your library in Mendeley Desktop. The imported references will
only appear after syncing

• Library Search also has a direct to Mendeley exporter

• When you click on the Mendeley
Icon, you will first have to sign in
• After you have signed in, the
record will be exported to
Mendeley – remember to sync

Adding PDF files to Mendeley Desktop
• With the Web Importer, you can
easily add references and
associated PDFs if available
• If not available via the Web
Importer you can still manually
add a PDF to a reference:
• First you need to download the
PDF file

• The PDF will load in a new window/tab > Click on the Download icon

• Open Mendeley Desktop
and select the relevant
reference
• In the right-hand window,
scroll down until you see
Files: and click on Add
File…

• Navigate to the folder where you saved the PDF, select it and click on Open
• The PDF will then be added to the relevant reference
• You can add additional files, like personal notes, reviews, etc.

Annotating PDF articles in Mendeley
Desktop
• Mendeley Desktop lets you annotate PDF articles

• You can add notes to relevant sections and you can also highlight certain areas of text

• To export annotated
PDFs, use this function
in the File tab:

Mendeley Desktop and MS Word
• In Mendeley Desktop, select the Tools tab and then click on Install MS Word Plugin (make
sure that Outlook and Word is closed before doing this)
• In MS Word click on the References tab > Mendeley Cite-O-Matic is now installed
I have already installed the plugin

• In Mendeley Desktop, click on View > Citation Style > More Styles…

• Click on Get More Styles and in the
Search bar, type in Stellenbosch
• Click on the result and then on
install
• If you have received a URL for a
custom style, paste the URL in the
Download Style bar and click on
Download

If SU Harvard style does not appear on the list, click on More
Styles… at the bottom of the list. You will find it there.

Once you have made
the changes and click
on refresh, all the
changes disappear!
Very NB! Do not make changes to your
bibliography in MS Word. You must make
those changes in Mendeley Desktop for them
to stay permanent.
