VON TRAPP BREWING
Stowe, VT
A humble brewery with
capacity for 2,000 barrels
per year quickly attracted
attention under the name Trapp Lager,
and the brewery received requests
from all over the United States. The
von Trapp family, who had always been
reticent to commercialize their family
heritage, realized that they had a prod-
uct deserving of the family name. The
new facility, completed in 2015 under
the name von Trapp Brewing, allowed
the family to expand beyond their
home territory and spread the gospel
of craft lagers.

GERMAN
HOFBRAU
Munich, Germany
Munich’s famous “hof-
brauhaus”, was founded
in 1589 by the Duke
of Bavaria, Wilhelm V. It is one of
Munich’s oldest beer halls. It was orig-
inally founded as the brewery to the
old Royal Residence, which at that
time was situated just around the cor-
ner from where the beer hall stands
today. The beer quickly became quite
popular thanks to the first brewer,
Heimeran Pongratz, and the famous
“Bavarian Beer Purity Law” of 1516
that stated that only natural ingre-
dients could be used in the brewing
process. Maximilian I, Wilhelm’s son
and heir, did not care much for the
popular Braunbier, which was the dark
and heavy brown beer. So, in the be-
ginning of the 17th century Maximil-
ian I turned the brewery’s focus onto
wheat beers and forbade all other
private breweries to brew wheat beer
thus creating a monopoly. In 1612,
Heimeran Pongraz’ successor, Elias
Pichler was under pressure to brew a
stronger beer hence the Maibock.
HACK-
ER-PSCHORR
Munich, Germany
In the late 18th
century, Joseph
Pschorr bought
the Hacker brewery from his father-
in-law; he subsequently founded
a separate brewery under his own
name. His two sons divided his estate
by each taking control of one of the
two separate breweries. In 1972,
Hacker and Pschorr merged to form
Hacker-Pschorr, but the beers were
sold as separate brands well after
1975. When Crown Prince Ludwig I of
Bavaria was to celebrate his wedding
in Munich in 1810, he decided it
was an occasion for all of Bavaria to
celebrate. He commissioned Josef
Pschorr, the then brewmaster of the
Hacker-Pschorr brewery, among other
Munich brewers, to develop special
brews to commemorate the occasion.
HACKER-PSCHORR
PAULNER
Munich, Germany
Paulaner obtained its
name from the Italian
monastic order of St. Paola, which
settled in the heart of what is now
Munich in the early 17th century.
During Lent, the God-fearing brothers
brewed a rich and powerful strong
beer which served them as liquid
bread: Paulaner Salvator. The high
quality and the outstanding taste of
the Salvator, which the monks sold to
the population of Munich for a small
charge, soon spread like wildfire. The
secular brewers in Munich feared this
competition. Their letter of protest
of 1634, which is deemed the first
documentary mention of Paulaner
beers, was to prevent public sale.
The monks only received an unlimited
right of sale from the Electoral Prince
150 years later. In gratitude, the first
mug of the strong beer is given to the
political leader of Bavaria even now
at the so-called “Salvatorprobe” (Sal-
vator tasting). At the same time, this
WARSTEINER
Warstein,
Germany
In 1753, farmer
Antonius Cramer
was asked to pay beer tax for the first
time as his home brewing volumes
surpassed the volume allowed for
personal consumption. Little did he
know that his actions would kick-start
a long-standing brewing tradition in
Warstein – a small town located in
the middle of the beautiful Arnsberg
forest, in the heart of Germany’s Sau-
erland region. In 1803, Caspar Cramer
built the original building, the Warstein-
er Domschänke – a small brewing
pub in the centre of the village. The
industrial revolution in the second half
of the nineteenth century provided
Warstein with some crucial transport
links, and when Albert Cramer Sr. be-
came the family’s first brewmaster to
hold a diploma, the company’s future
as a modern, professional leader in
the brewing industry was sealed.
SPATEN BREWERY
Munich, Germany
Spaten is one of Mu-
nich’s six major beer
brands. Its beer brew-
ing history dates back to 1397 when a
brewer named Hans Welser set up a
small brewery in central Munich, orig-
inally named Welser Prew. The own-
ership of the brewery changed hands
many times until 1807 when the royal
Hofbräu brewmaster, Gabriel Sedl-
mayr, took over the brewery which had
by then changed name to Spatenbräu.
At this time it was Munich’s smallest
brewery. The still today used logo with
a spade symbolizing a malt shovel,
bears Gabriel Sedlmayr’s initials.
Sedlmayr’s sons continued to run the
business and in 1867 Spaten became
the largest brewery in Munich, as then
measured by malt use.
WEIHENSTEPHAN
Freising, Germany
Dating back to
the year 1040 AD,
Weihenstephan is
the world’s oldest existing brewery.
Based just outside Munich in the town
of Freising, Weihenstephan brews in
accordance with the German Purity
laws, using 100% local, Bavarian
ingredients. Numerous national and
international awards, including having
Beer Advocate’s highest-rated wheat
beers in the world, are testament to the
quality that is the hallmark of this iconic
German beer brand.
AYINGER BREWERY
Bavaria, Germany
The Ayinger Brewery
(pronounced “eye-ing-
gr”; German: Brauerei
Aying) is a brewery in Aying, Bavaria,
Germany, about 25 km from Munich.
Approximately 10% of Ayinger beers
are exported, mainly to Italy, the
United States, and the rest of Europe.
Ayinger beers have been frequent
award winners in international beer
competitions. We are very lucky to
have them!!.

14TH STAR
BREWING
COMPANY
St. Albans, VT
The idea of 14th Star
Brewery was conceived on the battle-
fields of Afghanistan and was born in
Vermont in May 2012. The brewery
began in a 1200 square foot space
that included a tasting room. The initial
brewing equipment was built from old
maple sugaring equipment. Signifi-
cant growth in and around Vermont
necessitated a much larger brewery
and tasting room. On Veterans Day,
November 11th, 2015, the new brew-
ery located in a renovated bowling
alley, opened to the public. While still
under construction, the new 2,600
square foot tasting room contains large
windows that over look the brewhouse
giving patrons the unique opportunity
to view the brews they’ve come to
love being crafted. In the spring of
2015 a 90 barrel fermenter and bright
tank were added to accommodate the
growth canning has provided. Today,
four of 14th Star’s signature beers can
be found in cans throughout Vermont,
and in the near future, beyond. The
taproom contains 16 taps that offer
between 10 and 12 brews, 2 ciders
produced by Citizen Cider and 2 beers
poured on Nitro. The newest addition
of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches
has made 14th Star a destination in St.
Albans for beer lovers, near and far.

century ago by our grandfather and
great-grandfather. This proud tradition
was the inspiration for the Saranac
family of beers. In each bottle you can
taste our commitment to quality and
the patient attention to detail that has
been a signature of our brewery for
four generations. Here’s to another
125 years. Cheers.
FOUNDERS
BREWERY
Grand Rapids, MI
Founders Brewing
Company started
in 1997 when college buddies Dave
Engbers and Mike Stevens teamed
up to brew beer together. After many
speed bumps in the beginning,
including bankruptcy in the early
2000’s, Founders has evolved into
one of the most highly regarded craft
breweries in the United States. All of
this is thanks to their dedicated fans,
employees, and one simple mission
statement: “We don’t brew beer for
the masses. Instead, our beers are
crafted for a chosen few, a small cadre
of renegades and rebels who enjoy a
beer that pushes the limits of what is
commonly accepted as taste. In short,
we make beer for people like us.”
TWO ROADS
BREWING
COMPANY
Stratford, CT
Two Roads isn’t just the logo on our
brewery building, it’s our philosophy.
Life always seems to offer up two
prefer the one less taken and having
some fun along the way – in our lives,
our careers and especially for our
beers! Now our “road less traveled”
philosophy is being brought to life in
the beers that we create and how we
create them.
SMUTTYNOSE
Hampton, NH
n two decades, our
mission at Smut-
tynose has remained
simple: to brew the best beer we can
in a way we can be proud of. That
includes honoring New England’s rich
history of beermaking, respecting our
environment and playing an active role
in our community. We value creativity
and quality, authenticity and sustain-
ability, but at the end of the day, it really
boils down to making great beers to
be enjoyed with family and friends. We
hope you love drinking our beers as
much as we love brewing them.
BROWNS
BREWING
CO.
Walloomsac, NY
In 1993, Garry and Kelly Brown had
a vision to turn that abandoned 150
year-old warehouse on a then-blight-
ed River Street in Troy into a fully
operational craft brewpub. Renovating
the space took three painstaking years
but the endeavor was well worth it as
Brown’s Brewing Company became
an instant success and continues to
thrive to this day. Today, Brown’s Tap-
room is a social hub for the community
and offers a menu that compliments
the beer brewed on site. Brown’s brew
over 25 different styles of ales and
lagers throughout the year and serve
ten or more beers on tap at any one time.
SIERRA
NEVADA
Chico, CA
Founded in
1980, Sierra
Nevada is a pioneer of craft brewing
and sets the standard for quality.
Inspired by the nearby Sierra Nevada
Mountains, our beers are designed
to be as bold, wild and unwavering
as those storied granite peaks. With
respect to tradition and an unbridled
passion for innovation, Sierra Nevada
beers are inspired by the philosophy
that anything is possible. We are
committed to pushing the boundaries
of craft beer and we look forward to
the day that flavorful beers are the
standard throughout the world.

obsession with ingredi-

a small group of home brewers, who
simply wanted to make a better beer,
evolved into the adventurers known
today as Ballast Point.

Fork in the Road - Tour Day
Oktoberfest Vermont 2016
On Wednesday, August 17th, Oktoberfest Vermont brought a group of Burling-
ton High School students from the Fork in the Road food truck on a tour of the
businesses that have graciously sponsored a benefit dinner in their honor. The
“Meet Your Maker’ dinner, a four-course meal featuring chef-brewer duos that
have paired the bounty of Vermont’s harvest with a pour of some of the finest
beer on the market, will take place on Thursday, September 22nd.
The tour started with a visit to Pitchfork Farm of the Intervale. Eric
gave the students an in-depth look at what a typical day on an urban farm looks
like. He answered questions, provided timely agricultural insight, and explained
the rewards & challenges that exist in one of Burlington’s bustling food hubs.
We then traveled downtown to Hen of the Wood where butcher Calvin Hayes
demonstrated how to process whole rabbits. The students watched as Calvin’s
hands gracefully broke down the animals for dinner service as he explained his
approach to “whole-animal-butchery.” The third stop of the day was in Webster-
ville with a guided tour of of the dinner’s presenting sponsor, Vermont Creamery!
Matt Reese ushered our group around and we watched as the various goats’
milk products were processed, packaged, and stored - learning how a Vermont
business has the ability to reach across the country and beyond! A sampling of
their delicious cheeses rounded out the visit. The last stop of the day was back
at Hen of the Wood, where we joined servers for the pre-meal meeting in which
details of the evening and it’s guests are covered, service notes are discussed,
and chef Nick explained changes to the menu. The students enjoyed a hearty
lunch while getting a peek into the service-side of the restaurant. A walk through
Hen’s open kitchen while cooks prepared for dinner service provided the opportu-
nity for the young food-lovers to ask questions and learn about daily routines.
This tour was not only about educating young minds, but also associating
a face with the folks who will be contributing to the benefit dinner. Four stops at
businesses that make a difference every day… especially today!businesses that
make a difference every day…especially today!
