Students from NP's School of Engineering have developed two innovative projects - a robotic arm that can be controlled remotely for dangerous situations, and a mind-controlled robot using brain signals detected by a headset. A lecturer said about 3-4 projects each year attract interest from commercial companies. Both projects will be on display at NP for the next three days. MOE is evaluating carpark charges at schools like SP, TP and ITE after lapses were highlighted, and will inform institutions if reviews are needed. SP and TP recently implemented lower-than-market rates while ITE parking was previously free.

Title: NP students develop innovative engineering projects
Synopsis: Students from NP’s School of Engineering have developed innovative projects. One of them is a robotic arm that can be controlled
remotely. This arm can replace humans, especially in life-threatening conditions. The other project is a mind-controlled robot. A user just needs to
wear a headset, which detects brain signals to move the robot forward, backwards, left or right. This technology can be used to help the disabled to
move around. Wang De Shun, a lecturer, said that there are about 3 to 4 projects every year that attract the interest of commercial companies.
Both projects will be on display for the next three days at NP.

Title: Life counsellor
Synopsis: John Chng enjoys interacting with students and helping them find their direction in life. He has over 20 years of experience in counselling
students. He said: “Many people think that offering advice is the same as counselling, but that is not true. Counselling is about helping students to
recognise their strengths and to point them in the right direction.” He joined NP in 2005, and has been providing career guidance to students since.

Title: MOE is evaluating school carpark charges
Synopsis: MOE is evaluating the carpark charges in schools, and will inform the relevant institution if a review is needed. So far, SP, TP and ITE are
currently reviewing their charges, as some lapses were highlighted in a report done by the Auditor-General’s Office last year. SP and TP recently
implemented a charged parking system, offering rates lower than the market rate. At ITE, carparks were free. Such practices amount to giving
hidden subsidies and are not in line with government rules.
