Today I’m here to talk with you about Death and Birth and its NOT exactly what you’re probably thinking of. The somber news I’m sharing today is about a death that is happening in companies across the world and quite honestly…it’s time has come.
What I’m talking about is the death of employee engagement
Engagement is a failed experiment
It had its moment in the limelight for over half a decade but the data shows us that at its best engagement has gone up about 1% in the past 5 years and at its worse it’s actually going down with an average of only 35% of employees being highly engaged.
What are the reasons for these sad statistics?
Employees consistently are asked to put on super human capes and do the job of three people.
Managers aren’t adequately removing obstacles that would help employees be successful in their roles
And there are staggering unsatisfactory levels of manager support and coaching
So where does that leave us?
Well, one thing I know for sure is we can’t leave this pool of potential motivation untapped and waste a MASSIVE opportunity that could literally change the landscape of work as we know it.
So it’s time to give BIRTH to something new…. the ‘passionate employee’?
Passionate employees are focused, engaged and committed and will do whatever it takes to delight your customers
They not only have a emotional connection and conviction for their work but also a devotion to your company.
Make no mistake about it, Passionate employees will truly take your organization to the next level.
So how you might ask do we ignite this passion and fire in employees because we know passion doesn’t just happen for no reason. It happens when employees are doing things they find both emotionally satisfying AND worthwhile or meaningful.
And that is the foundation of what we call The Passion Pyramid.
The Passion Pyramid identifies five human needs that ignite passion and more importantly the leadership skills that can create the environment to satisfy each need. Let’s take a look
Level 1 – To be respected. Humans need to be respected as much as they need oxygen. Yet many leaders unintentionally treat their employees with disrespect by not listening, not involving them or dismissing their personal values
Level 2 - To learn and grow. This need is as natural as it is for a baby to get up and walk. We are innately curious and want to learn and a manager who is skillful at coaching, mentoring and counseling can satisfy our thirst for knowledge.
Level 3 – To be an insider –if you want your employees to be devoted to your company, simply put – include and involve them as much as possible in decision making, goal setting and change.
Level 4 – To do meaningful work. Are you in business to make the world a better place? Does your employee know how they make a difference?
Level 5 – To be on a winning team. A cohesive team that is built on trust and strong relationships ignites passion and exceeds expectations. Period.
Bottom line…your company and every company in the world wants employees to LOVE their job; and more importantly to LOVE the company.
Building the Passion Pyramid is the roadmap to get you there.
So are you ready to give birth to something new? Birth to employee passion?
You can make it happen and at Powers Resource Center we’re your experts that can help.
